Not trade. Draft.

Players that GWS traded to other clubs (as they could recruit them for nothing):
Terry Milera
Ahmed Saad
Jamie Elliot
Marty Clarke
Steven Morris
Jarrad Boumann

Other players that could have been drafted (or simply recruited) as they were traded for virtually nothing, picked up late or in the rookie draft:
Dayne Zorko
Josh Jenkins
Darren Pfeiffer
Peter Yagmoor
Beau Wilkes
Zac Dawson
Kyal Horsley
Addam Maric
Lee Spurr
Broc McCauley
Andrew McQualter
Cory Dell'Olio
James Magner
Clancee Pearce

Let alone all the best 20-somethings in the WAFL, SANFL and VFL that could possibly make solid contributions.

Now obviously you wouldn't pick them all up, but there are quite a few there that are solid AFL performers this year. Even just half a dozen of the better performers in that list would make your team far more competitive - and there was virtually no downside in doing so. You still have all your top draft picks to grab Patton, Coniglio et al. And if they turn out to be list cloggers then you get rid of them at the end of the season, like you will a bunch of kids that contributed nothing to your list this year.

Those players wouldn't make much difference, maybe they'd lose by 100 instead of 120 but in 4 years no one will remember that and that's 6 kids that you don't have. It's not like GWS where taking picks in the 80s all their kids have potential.

I received an email from a Tigers supporter who went to ANZ Stadium today to watch the Tigers vs Rabbitohs match who returned to his car after the game to find 4 free tickets to next weekends GWS vs Port Adelaide game on the window. Anyone else get a similar gift of generosity from the AFL?
I still wouldn't go, would you? ;)

Can anyone please find out whether this is true? If so, then the AFL HAVE stooped as low as Super League did in 1997 when they went into the queue for tickets to the Swans-Demons at the SCG to give people free Super League State of Origin tickets.

As I have kept saying all along, if the AFL weren't so obsessed with looking at spurious sources for new northern states corporate partners, the very thought of something as farcical as GWS would never have eventuated in the first place. In short, GWS are NOT about getting bums on seats, they are about attracting new businesses to the AFL 'brand'. They seem pig-headedly ignorant to the fact that GWS is seriously damaging the AFL 'brand's' credibility in the most discerning market in the country. In my view they would have been better served standing up the SCG Trust doing renovations at their venue twice in 3 AFL seasons, damaging Swans' crowds.

The most interesting point to note about the farce that is GWS is that the AFL has now made an issue out of Homebush for Swans & AFL fans when it never used to be & never should be now. In the past Swans fans went to Homebush regardless of whether they wanted to or not; it was part of the deal of being a member. Thanks to free transport & a carnival atmosphere outside the ground our crowds were huge & we'd be playing top class opponents out there. Now with GWS's arrival, the AFL has very much created an East vs West mentality amongst many in the Swans' supporter base. Now Swans have have an excuse to NOT go to Homebush, as they see it (rightly or wrongly) is not 'our' ground or area any more.

Again just like they did when North Melbourne were playing games in Sydney & were damaging the brand, the AFL go ahead & do things without consulting anyone who knows what is going on. They think throwing money at this issue will solve things. It won't & is damaging MY club & the game indirectly as a result.

The Swans' position on the ladder could not have come at a better time. It is the best "Stick it up" to the AFL possible! :p When it comes to Australian Rules football, Sydney was is & always will be red & white! :footy:

JF
PS:- Anyone wishing to hop on the bandwagon is welcome. Even GWS fans, all 10 of you! :p

The AFL giving away free tickets. Reminds me of the story from Robert Walls when he was coaching the Bears. He went into McDonalds and a kid approached him with a handful of free tickets to a Bears game and asked him if he wanted them!!!! Good to see things haven't changed.

The AFL want to make money? Colour me shocked. Giants are about growth in economic terms - Participation, TV rights and Corporate money. It's not cynical though as Giants and the AFL have done more for the grassroots than any other sport in Sydney.

Want to know what damages the brand? A failed Melbourne team as the Sydney representative. The Swans have maximised their potential. There is no room for growth in Sydney if it stays just the Swans.

By the way people pay thousands of dollars a year after a 15 year waiting period to become SCG members to watch cricket, not Aussie Rules. For the SCG trust AFL is just value-add.

There are plenty of solid AFL performers in the Giants team - but that alone doesn't keep you competitive. I think our top, maybe, 12 players would be close to a first team selection for other AFL teams.

Or looked at another way - there'd be 15 to 20 18/19 year olds that other clubs would pick up tomorrow if they were allowed.

But obviously, a team of 18/19 year olds will not be competitive playing at AFL level right now.

it's tough watching these beltings, and I'm not sure I can take another year of it, but most of these boys will be very, very good players.

The biggest error in scheduling of the Collingwood game was obviously having them travel to Sydney for games only a fortnight apart, the Collingwood supporter seating for the Swans game is already sold out so it is no surprise which game the vast majority of their supporters chose to travel up to watch. If the usual 7k + Collingwood supporters who travel showed up threads like this never get started as 13 to 15k would be seen as a good crowd.

There were as many GWS supporters at the weekends game as there have been to all games at Skoda which was around 5 to 6k who are obviously the core supporter group who are willing to endure the 120+ point defeats but can see the talent the team has and are enjoying seeing kids like Cameron, Greene, Coniglio, Frost, Hoskin-Elliot, Kennedy, Patton etc develop. Anyone who watched the first half of each quarter on the weekend would have seen just how impressive these kids are and what another preseason of hard running will do for them. For people to be suggesting that the Giants not play these kids and that they should have taken more older and seasoned but only average players just to limit the losing margins is ludicrous, could you imagine being the recruiter who let a Cameron, Patton or Coniglio slip through the net so that your team only got beat by 10 goals instead of 20 during their first season.

It is asking a but much to expect the general public to rock up and see the kids play at the moment off the back of the worst 5 game run in VFL/AFL history but when they become more competitive the people of Sydney will show up and of every 10 that have a look at their games the Giants will do what the Swans have done and that is secure a few of the them as hardened supporters because lets be frank AFL live is one of the worlds best spectacles.

When I moved up to Sydney, the Swans were a basket case on the field and attracting 7,000 crowds off it. They were a struggle to watch. But the AFL had foresight, kept them alive; and the rewards came.

Thats embarrasing if true BUT i am 100% sure in fine AFL fashion the supporters will ignore it to the point that they will create this bit of fiction that it never happened, like the majority of the shitness the AFL does.

I been rabbing on about GWS and Sydneysiders not wanting a second AFL club but all i got was "troll" and "League troll" but hey each week passes and more GWS shitness keeps popping up.

But hey what do i know..i just live in Sydney and my knowledge is 1/5 of that of a victorian who only travels to sydney when their team plays.

I had a very quick look at that facebook page - it's obviously a made up story!

God some of these league trolls are just so stupid.

Why would the AFL bother with trying to entice league fans to their games?

There are millions of Sydneysiders who don't give a damn about league - that is who the AFL is targetting.

A post on a message board from a Facebook post from someone who received an email. Great source.

I’m not saying it didn’t happen, I don’t know. I suspect it’s bullshit but I can’t prove it. I wasn’t at the NRL yesterday and didn’t have my car parked anywhere near an NRL venue.
But even if, hypothetically and without prejudice, it was true – is it really that bad? Neither Souths nor Wests Tigers have a game next Saturday, so fans of both clubs would be free to attend. If it builds brand awareness for a new club, it may not be such a bad thing. It’s not like we’re trying to take people away from an NRL game to entice them to come to an AFL game instead.

Of course it is, everything the AFL does is legit and above board, if anything the AFL are the worlds most legit orgfanisations.

Get your hand off it barkley, when it comes to fighting the code wars, you and your posse of 4, you seem to be right there at the front line taking it all for the good of the game. Now all we need is finders, stewie's power and mxlett to come in and fill this thread with half arsed truths and other made up shit.

God some of you diehard afl fans are just well your own par with rugby league nuffies. I would pin both sets of fans in a cage fight stand back and watch.

I've just sifted through all the material surrounding the Birchgrove Oval story, and have seen how League were played like a song by an SMH senior executive, who also happened to be the Secretary of the soccer club that ended up winning further access to Birchgrove Oval.

The Leaguies stupidly got sucked into a battle against the AFL (who never requested Birchgrove in the first place), and while the Leaguies got themselves into a lather - soccer pinched their ground - all orchestrated by the bloke pushing rubbish in the SMH.

This is just another story, in a long line of stories, of stupidity amongst Leaguies.

Anyway, the facebook "story" has about as much credence as these SMH stories.

Just like anything a pro afl anti nrl trollop would post. I would believe that this happened because where i am sitting i see a grim future for GWS in my city and with the shocking turn up they will need to pull out all stops to market this embarrassment of a team..the corporate AFL franchise AKA as GWS.

is it really that bad?
Do you have to ask? For many many many a year victorians have been loud in their dissing of the NRL whenever they do this. To most laughing at the NRL the general consesensus was that the AFL never need to do any of this as everyone in the world would embrace the game that is gripping australia at fever pictch.

There's a wonderful quote I heard on the Coodabeens on the weekend that I think we should share with our League trolling friends everywhere:

There is a reason why the tall poppy is the tallest, stupid.

You keep battling those codes barkley..maybe Andy D might notice and umm make you his personal arse cleaner.

I'm sure that's tearing you apart.

Be pleased with your grim picture.

Why should you worry about the AFL wasting hundreds of millions of dollars - it's their money to lose - why are you so worried about it?

No it''s not. It's actually pleasing seeing this whole debacle and watching morons like you spin shit.

As i have said in the past, love the code hate obsessive moronic fans, like yourself.

You keep battling those codes.

I'm not battling any codes, I'm pointing out the naivety of Leaguies in allowing soccer to steal a march on them. Soccer gave them the bait, and League fell for it hook, line and sinker.

This story is more about conflict of interest in the media, with the potential for code war being used by the protagonist.

I notice in your last post that you have lowered your previous brave front to flinging personal insults.

In other words, you were just another League troll trying to make out otherwise.

Geez, who ever would have guessed.

I'm feeling the love.

Someone who puts a lot of store in an anonymous facebook post, quoting a friend no less, ultra keen to embrace such an idiotic story, obviously has a great love for the game.

JF, do you remember the push to have the Swans killed off because no one in Sydney cared about football?

Yes I do. I was at the rally to save them down at Darling Harbour. It was from that very day that I knew the Swans & AFL Footy belonged in Sydney. We became a membership-based club & started coming across to footy fans are a REAL footy club.

If people do the same for GWS, then I will know they belong. But I just can't see that happening. Sydney already has its own team, remember!

Mate you spend too much effort and time caring about something which in the scheme of things is pretty insignificant.

So it's no different to some of the rubbish i have read on here in regards to other codes, which differs in no way what was posted on facebook.

I tell you what - it's more significant than an anomyous post in a facebook page - which you are working overtime to peddle.

Yes Barkly thats exactly what i am doing.

God you are one sad campaigner to spend so much time energy and effort battling bad a dn mean codes which might destroy the afl.

Futbol and league are the number one copdes up north, everyone knows this.

In 10 years time when GWS become one of the relocated melbourne sices everyone up north will be playing "sokkah"
