Why the hell would he play him in the middle over Tsatas or Durham, we are bottom 4. We don’t need to give minutes to a soft washed up cat
Yeah where did I say that? If you are going to play shiel then play him to his strengths. There is plenty of opportunity to rotate through the midfield.

Shiel is why you don't re-sign Scott. How can any coach think that this guy would be suited as a HBF.. has always struggled with defensive pressure, is not good overhead and is prone to shocking turnovers. At least when he was butchering the ball going inside 50 you had a chance to defend the turnover.. now it is just automatic goals.

He either rotates through the middle, plays sub or goes to VFL. HB is not a win for us.

I don't think there's anyone else though. There's some kids who could come in but given they've got a lot of developing to do I wouldn't say any of them are going to be better overall than a mature player like Shiel
They don't have to be better though, let them in and develop in the AFL.

I think ideally, a mature conversation would be had in which both parties acknowledge he's come here to win to a flag, and it's unlikely to happen anytime soon since the core of the side that may have done that has gone (Daniher, Saad, etc), and therefore moving on probably works for both parties - Shiel moves to a legit contender and we get some more picks to continue rebuilding.

But this is the AFL and we don't have those type of conversations.

lol

Should have been traded day one of last trade period.

If there was really no interest, that should have been the message that he played in the vfl unless absolutely necessary

Remember when we held onto David Myers for almost 10 years and he peeked out a 126 game career cause we hoped he'd come good??

yep, that's the same old Essington from 10 years ago. As much as they say things have or are changing, things remain the same

Who plays on the HBF in his place?

Myers isn't a good comparison because there's the whole drug saga which stuffed up our list management decisions (which led to recruiting Shiel). basically all the banned players bar like 2 or 3 should have been encouraged to move to other clubs so that we could do a proper re-build and they could not waste the rest of their careers. but it was an emotional time and we made emotional decisions. it's not like everyone on here at the time was saying Hooker should leave for a WA team.

ironically Myers probably would have been one of the ones worth keeping around, due to probably not too much external value.

anyway, Shiel should have been moved on at the end of 2020 or 2021 as once Daniher, Saad & Conor, left, Hurley's infection happened, Devon Smith wouldn't stop yelling and ceased being a good player, etc etc, it meant that whole core we added Shiel into to help win stuff was absolutely busted. but instead of trying to get some sort of value back for Shiel, we've instead done....whatever the hell you call the last two seasons and now this season. it's silly stuff but we've done silly stuff for 20 years now.

then again, not too many people wanted to trade Shiel at the end of 2020 or 2021 anyway. but to me, it was an extraordinary simple decision to make. but I guess cashing out on Shiel after 2 or 3 seasons would have been bad for our pride, or something

I think also at the club there was quite a bit of denial about the state of the list. The players weren't shit (how could they be? Dodoro only picks the best), they were underperforming and a new coach was all that was needed to fix everything

Letting Parish go in free agency was another pretty easy decision but the regime at the time didn't want to appear with the L so over capitalised and have him 6 (undeserving) years imho.
