So we got caught once and I thought it was stiff. But I’ve noticed something that’s giving us an edge that will probably result in the odd 50. It’s very small in the detail but I genuinely feel like it’s intentional and worth the odd penalty.

I think Clarko has got our players going to the mark initially then immediately requesting to the umpire to go outside 5m. By doing this the umpire never calls stand. As a result our players don’t move back the full 5m straight away. They do it gradually while also covering off the angles if the opponent is looking to play-on. The umpire doesn’t pay 50 because they never said stand, they said “outside 5”. And our player is doing what they asked, but doing it slowly while covering off those angles.

It’s genius. Watch the replay and you’ll notice it.

Where a field Umpire has awarded a Mark or Free Kick to a Player, or a Player is preparing

to bring or bringing the football back into play after a Behind is scored, a Fifty Metre

Penalty in favour of that Player will be awarded if the field Umpire is of the opinion that

any Player or Official from the opposing Team:

(a) has moved off The Mark;

(b) when in the immediate contest, unreasonably holds a Player after that

Player has Marked the football or been awarded a Free Kick;

(c) when not in the immediate contest, holds a Player after that Player has Marked

the football or been awarded a Free Kick;

(d) enters or does not make every endeavour to immediately vacate the Protected

Area, except when the Player is accompanying or following within two metres

of their opponent;

(e) has not returned the football directly and on the full to the Player awarded the

Mark or Free Kick;

(f) engages in any conduct which delays or impedes the play; or

(g) engages in any other conduct for which a Free Kick would ordinarily be awarded

The whole rule is bloody stupid. I hate to see 50m paid for technical free kicks, it makes the game more about umpiring decisions than scoring goals from "football acts". The umpire should just set the mark, and the opponent can stand anywhere, as long as it's no closer to the player than the mark. If the opponent wants to stand at a 45 degree angle, 10 metres behind the mark, then that's their choice. If they cross over the mark, then it's 50 metres. That makes it less open to interpretation and inconsistent umpiring.

Id have to look at it again, but my original take was he was already in the protected area when the mark was taken, and he was exiting the area towards the mark. I'm guessing the umpire thought it was one of those situations where the player runs in from behind and enters the protected area to them stand the mark, but I didn't think that was what this was.

For some reason the umpire mics weren't really audible very well this game, but I guess there could have been an 'east west' instruction to exit the area that LDU didn't follow.

Regardless, it was an unexpected turnover kick and mark and the umpire probably could have applied some feel for the game and just let the players reset.
