Player Watch #9: Trent Cotchin is an obscenely good 3 x Premiership Captain, Victorian Captain & Brownlow Medalist

If there's any player we are going to carry towards 300 games its gonna be Cotchin. He was a huge part of our 3 flags and will go down in history as a Richmond legend. Not that we are carrying him ATM, he is easily best 22.
Without him as captain the club never turns around its culture and this team never wins a flag

I love Cotch and will cry when he receives a standing ovation as he runs off the field in his last game.

BUT.....

In 2023, he will be holding his spot at the expense of RCD (22 years, 93kg), Jack Ross (21 years, 87kg) and Thomson Dow (20 year, 79kg).

He's a Brownlow winner, 3x premiership player and former captain of the club. None of those boys are going to be as good as him, but we need to develop them and Cotch is delaying the inevitable if he plays on. If we could shove him in a forward pocket I would, but he hasn't been a good forward since his Brownlow year.

IMHO, 2022 should be his last year. I want a flag in 2024/2025, and this is the fastest way to get there.

Absolute garbage! Having a player like Cotch around just for his leadership and what he can teach our new draftees would be worth him sticking around another year. He's still easily in our best team though, so we should do everything we can to get him to 300

Seriously how much more can he teach, getting pretty sick of the leadership excuse. He stepped down as captain and if he still wants to teach get an assistant coaches job. There are 22 players in a game not 21 and an on field coach. Might as well tank if you wanna do that. We have plenty of other leaders. If we get players in he won’t be best 22, even if he is I’d rather play a kid. He could easily fall off a cliff next year like edwards.

RCD will be delisted. Ross will need to step up as a consistent 2 way player before he is a key midfield piece. Dow's disposal is limited.

If we are seeking out ready made midfielders in the upcoming trade periods, those kids are unlikely to see game time anyway.

If those lads are good enough they will smash the door down in the twos and demand games. Then hold their form and be kept in the side. Thats the way it's always been. Until they do that we have really one )two with Deon when he plays) specialist ball winner, who also happens to be a battering ram in the middle. Plus his unparalleled leadership means if he wants to go on then he's definitely best 22.

I don't think RCD will be delisted. We've already got enough spots to fill:

2022 departures: Caddy, Lambert, Parker
2022 retirements: Edwards
2022 delistings: Martyn, Aarts, Bauer, Mansell, Stack and Colina are all more likely to be delisted than RCD.

I assume we'd only want to go to the draft with (at most) 7 open spots. I've named 10 players who have left or are likely to leave.

I think RCD, Stack and Mansell all get another 1 year contract.

Bauer nominated an 18 month contract in the mid season draft. He’s locked in for next year.

As pointed out Bauer has an 18 month contract, plus you clearly don't give a player much of a chance to show their worth if you're only willing to give them 6 months on the list to prove themselves.
Stack has been mentioned in the media by his manager as being in discussions for a contract extension
Colina is a Cat B rookie, so doesn't actually take up a list spot

Given we need to elevate Pickett & Stack from the rookie list to keep them, we actually don't have that many list spots, even with departures like Edwards, Caddy, Lambert, Martyn, Parker (rookie) & Aarts (rookie) either already confirmed, or likely to be departing.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that Bauer had a contract for next year or that Colina was a list "freebie".

I'll be disappointed if RCD is delisted so that Cotchin can have one more year in the middle. Even if it's only a 10% chance of success, it seems crazy to throw that away without ever giving the kid half a season in the AFL.

But out of Ross, RCD and Dow is the only one contracted in 2023. RCD has not come on at all. I actually don't think Dow is much of a player. Ross? borderline, his game this week was average/poor but he keeps getting selected. I'd resign him. Sonsie has been good so far.

I'd use our first pick on a the best mid in the draft, should be something around pick 10. Ward & Hobbs are playing a lot of football. We go for that type the guy should be able to transition into the midfield while Cotch hangs around. Or use the first pick on Tarranto.
Flags in 2024 eh? Dimma went/is going for the flag this year.
I don't see it. Look Miller Rioli, Tarrant and Gibcus are fine players but the backline hasn't been right. Not the same as Baker, Broad, Grimes, Balta, Short, Vlas, The midfield is not the same all a couple of years older. Nank is not quite as good. 3rd tall fwd is a problem. Balta is better in defence.
IF Martin returns to decent form. Sure but I think RFC has no chance of a flag until Dusty money is freed up.
If Balme is still in charge, he knows how manage it all.

I heard that Cotch got out of his misconduct fine by writing a letter contesting it. Can anyone confirm anything official? Also wondering if they contested Pickett's fine.

Trent is a burst or phase player, these days.
A specialist, an expert.
Four or five passages of play in the Lions game, where he created goals out of adversity.
One where he kept the ball live on the outer wing boundary, shrugged the tackle, resulting in a new forward entry and goal.
Must play on, no pun intended, next year.

RCD is Silk V2.0 sorry mate he won’t make it

Given his track record with the AFL tribunal, perhaps Trent could be our designated hitman on match day. He'd get a week for this.

Does he want to play on? I would say probably not. He doesn’t love footy like others do. He loves the club, staff and teammates no doubt but I don’t think he loves AFL enough to go on again.

Sad thing would be if we didn’t know he was retiring til after his final game and we don’t get to say “thank you”

Colina is not getting delisted. Club is very excited about what he could become.

RCD and Dow wouldn't get a game for Norf right now.
