"If you're 18 and right wing you've got no heart. If you're 30 and left wing you've got no brain."

Something like that?
Ha ha.

Well in my case there's some truth in that.

I think we all evolve in life in ways that we perhaps least expected.

Politics is such a hotspot for many people I'm still amazed at how seriously they still take it after a lifetime of experience and living through various types of Governments with no one's life having changed in any discernable way because of it.

The big thing now is that once people have enough money to do whatever they like they sometimes embrace all these causes they wouldn't have a bar of when they were trying get by and raise a family.

It's quite strange to live in a area you would describe as affluent that is demonstrably now left/teals. That would've been unthinkable even a decade ago.

So it cuts both ways now.

What's his healthcare plan? Leave it to RFK jr?

Trump is far from transparent and anyone who thinks he is has been on the cool aid

Reproductive rights was one of the top 5 issues according to exit polls and passed in several states. Or is that fake news?

Reproductive rights have been a major issue ever since the Republican supreme court overturned Roe V Wade. It's the main reason why the gender gap was so extreme.

RFK Junior in charge of health care is a scary thought. The lunatics have taken over the asylum.

The other significant factor about Trump winning the popular vote is that some of his rusted ons will have died since 2020 and a large swathe of 18 plusses have become eligible to vote. This was meant to be a huge boost to the Dems but it's gone the other way.

I have no explanation for this. When I was in the 18-30 bracket anyone who wasn't significantly left was looked on as kind of weird and I get the impression that's still the case in this country.
Trump had huge appeal with males - 18-30. Of all ethnicities.

And it's not too simplistic to say that his less than politically correct attitude towards women had a lot to do with it.

Young males feel disenfranchised with the world at the moment and don't know where they fit in it. They watch a lot of the narrative around women and feel they are being made responsible - true or not. A lot is made of women's rights (not without cause) but it treads on young mens self worth. It's the cause of the rise of people like Andrew Tate - driven by males feeling like they are becoming powerless. It's part of the appeal of Joe Rogan.

Trump had massive appeal to that audience and he knew it. Every time he said something to outrage the Dems his appeal grew more.

I quite like her . But she was too far left for them to risk it apart from the unknown quantity factor.

If she sees herself as a leader in waiting she now faces the fork in the road.

Does she rally her supporters and say we lost this because we weren't left enough , or does she try to moderate her views that will be palatable to the majority of her party and the electorate at large.

She has the capacity in her I think but it'll be the ideological battle that defines her career.
How does she raise enough cash to get a seat at the table? That’s her main issue

It's only a huge boost if they show up to vote. In a country with voluntary voting, the youngest always have the worst turnouts. Obama appealed to them and got reelected. Harris didn't exactly inspire them to go out and vote for more of the same.

I've gone the reverse, but I suspect it's as much a result of party drift in Australia as anything.

Well the indications in the lead up and on the day from the left leaning media were that young people were turning out in uprecedented numbers both via mail ins and on the day . The raw numbers would kind of support that and particularly at the rallies.

There have been all sorts of reasons and excuses put up for the outcome . I think there's a little bit of truth in all of them ,so they didn't manage to win on anything really.

I do wonder what would've happened if Bernie had won the democratic nomination in 2016

Honestly Bernie would've been completely obliterated in a National vote.

The funny thing is that the issues that they've lost on seems to fuel those further left than where they were to think they weren't left enough. Which I guess is no surprise.

I quite like Bernie though. He's a great warrior for his causes.

I remember when the dem nomination was going on in 2016 reading that there was a belief that Sanders could and would beat Trump if he got the nomination but that he wasn't going to be able to beat Clinton for the nomination. The same article said that Clinton wouldn't be able to beat Trump for the presidency.
Sanders was never going to win the nomination though, he doesn't like the status quo, the Dems do, as do the Republicans, which is why they originally fought Trump so hard.
Sanders has good common sense policies like affordable healthcare, the government being able to negotiate medication prices on behalf of the citizens, living wage for full time jobs etc. The American political system will never let those things happen IMO.
