A whirlwind for Sidebottom

Collingwood’s first overall pick in the 2008 AFL National Draft was 17 year old, Steele Sidebottom.

In his first training with his new teammates, Sidebottom impressed the coaching staff with his third place finish during the two kilometre time trial.

“Yeah it was awesome I suppose,” Sidebottom told CTV after his first training session with his new club.

“Obviously there was a lot of talent out there and it was good to come up against it and get to know all the boys.”

Sidebottom has had little time to adjust to his new life at Collingwood and admits the experience has been overwhelming.

“It’s been a whirlwind. Not knowing and then ending up at Collingwood. You couldn’t ask for a much better place to end up.”

Sidebottom gained media attention after his 10 goal haul in the TAC Cup grand final but was quick to state he plays his best football in the midfield.

“I probably played most of my junior footy in the midfield. I will be trying to bring a bit of run. I will be doing everything I can on the field to get Collingwood where ever they need to be.”

After only one day Sidebottom has already received banter from his new teammates regarding his unusual name.

“Even today I have heard a few. Blue scope and hard arse and stuff like that. They have already started.”

The video of the interview is on the Collingwood website. I'm sure it wont be long before DTM posts it in here.

He seems fairly nervous but you can't expect too much this early.

he did kinda hint in the interview that his nickname has always been Rusty, perhaps he would prefer that?? ;-)

also, did he support us before coming here? i take it thats what he meant when he said there wasnt a better place to end up

^he supported the bombers... but as he most likely visited the lexus center and a few other training homes of teams before being drafted, he would have decided the pies would be the nicest place to come, with the facilities they have and he probably got along well with the boys

dayne beam said the same thing and he was wrapt to come to the pies,

Dawes I remember used to support geelong but also said Collingwood was the team he wanted to come to and it was the best place he visited

10 goals in the TAC final......
Where the **** have I been?
I had heard he played well.......bit of a bloody understatement!

As well as 34 possessions :p

I found it a bit weird the way he was like "I hope I can help get Collingwood to wherever they want to be"

It seems like either his stay is a short one, or he doesn't quite know what all AFL teams aim for. Or am I over analysing it?
