Jeff Gieschen last night went to great lengths to explain how it was not a good look for matthew knights to glare at the umpires at 3/4 time at the ess- demon game.( i do agree with him on that point ).I think the biggest concern and one that could have far reaching damage to the game in the long run will be the abuse the umpires will receive in lower grades, country ,and school football, if the rules committee do not change the rules about the 50mtr penalty. we will never get any new umpires into the system as the abuse will multiply ten fold through the system. it is frustrating enough at the elite level how will it be in the lower grades when the ugly supporter comes to the forefront.

This is amazing. Only two nights ago I posted on this forum that I'm just waiting for the first call of passive aggression by the umpires .. and here it is!!

Gieschen, do the game a favour and retire. You want people to stop glaring at umpires? Then get them to start umpiring to a standard that is acceptable to the coaches, players, and football public, and stop imposing your own will on the game you washed up hack.

i have said before, we will never get any new umpires into the sysyem because the guys currently at the top level embarrass themselves every week.

adelaide hawk, read that post a few nights ago and thought you were joking, unfortunately, here we are.

the fact that he said it sets a bad example lost all credibility sets a bad example to who?

grown men

there are'nt any kids coaching teams that i know of

so to say it sets a bad example for grown men is insane

What world do we live in if glaring at somebody or a group of people in disgust is acceptable behaviour? He wasn't just a passing glare, he did for for a least 30 seconds. It was at a distance too, which makes it all the more cowardly.

What's it supposed to prove, that you're somehow "tougher" or "smarter" than another human being? Seems like a huge ego trip to me.

Perhaps it's acceptable in your world. Not in mine, whether football-related or somewhere else. You can have your world if that's the way you want it.

P.S. I saw the bad free kick given - "push in the back". Yes, it was a bad decision. Coaches and players make bad decisions too.

And they are held accountable for them...

Cowardly? He knows he cant say anything, you want hmi to go over and belt the umpires?

Ego trip? Knights was disappointed in the umpiring. It was a look FFS, he showed restraint IMO.

Soon Geisch will start whingeing about crowds booing umpires, no doubt that riles you up Bob...

Just stick to what I actually said, rather than suggesting something "else". Unsure why you feel the need to insult the person you're rebutting.

If an umpire did it to a player or a coach, imagine the public uproar demaning the umpire be sacked. That umpire probably would get sacked.

A coach does it and it's all okay.

No,Bob, back in the days when w had good umpires and good umpires coaches there good be some banter between players and umpires. Some of Glen James' one-liners were hilarious with the result that he gained the respect of the players. At th moment, the players, coaches and clubs are justifiably unhappy. However, until such time as the Clubs and AFLPA insist that the current umpires administration step down we will put up with this rubbish for years to come. It's time the Clubs gave the AFL Commission an ultimatum: change the personnel in charge of umpiring or be sacked.

I actually agree with what you're saying... it would solve a lot of problems. I've done this myself on plenty of occasions. I try as much as possible to talk to officials and players after the match. Each side comes away with a much better understanding of each other. At least in local leagues, this kind of thing still happens sometimes. At the moment, especially at AFL level, there seems to be this big stand-off.

Although, "I have been told" that it all wasn't as "romantic" in the past as you make out. There were still plenty of times that umpires would be treated like crap or they were confined to one corner of the room, speaking to themselves.

Yeah, I agree that perhaps some people have been in their jobs too long. Time for fresh ideas.

Both sides need to listen to each other, not just the umpires listening to the players/coaches or vice-versa.

It's also a bit harder to "get together" because of all the aftermatch stuff that players, officials and umpires have to do these days at AFL level. Some umpires and players don't necessarily want to mix in an "alcoholic environment". The advice is not to mix alcohol with recovery, especially at a professional level. It doesn't mean that organising something social isn't entirely impossible. It needs both sides to be proactive.

I'm not an AFL umpire, so some of what I'm saying could still be incorrect. I'm going by what "sources" have told me.

Who are you trying to kid Bob? You've got umpire written all over you!

Where can we donate to help Knights pay this sham of a fine?

I urge all footy supporters to back Knights on this and back any other AFL identity punished in a similar unjust manner.

Adelaide Hawk hit the nail on the head with his post. Well said.

It is a suspended fine.

Gieschen and his mates need to realise that respect is earned and maintained through doing their job in a competent manner. It isn't a god given right. If they keep pissing people off with their ridiculous over-officiating they'll lose any respect they have very quickly. Gieschen needs to go, he treats fans like fools and many fans are getting fed up.

Umm, how many times have said on this forum that I'm an umpire, including referring to it in the previous post...

"not an AFL umpire" obviously meant I'm not an umpire that officiates in the AFL competition. Sorry if that confused you.

If you want to have the last word, you can have it. Goodbye.

What's it supposed to prove, that you're somehow "tougher" or "smarter" than another human being?

Obviously it's for show. It's a public criticism of the umpires without saying a word. The more the AFL tries to stifle, the more ways people will try to find around the prohibitions.

The AFL is afraid of anything that might incite a mob mentality, but the more they try to apply the clamps, the more it grows in strength behind their backs.

We want our game back.

Knights should have been fined. After all these poor umpires are out in the middle without their mummies to hold their hand. Any coach staring at them might really scare the poor little fellows. They might even cry.

Afl have missed a trick here, they could fines thousands of supporters every week for looking at the umpires.

Imagine how much money they would make.

I am researching the AFL umpires and our perceptions of their performance.

Would very much appreciate you taking a few minutes to complete this voluntary survey (link below). Rest assured your answers will remain completely anonymous.
