end result could well be a fine for Michael Christian for his intentional attack on poor Gazza
Have said this to multiple Hawks supporters, but it should have been a fine for Cousins as well. You guys chose not to appeal. Mitchell got off last year for a worse incident. Not sure you really have a leg to stand on

This is a terrible argument from a lawyer, who has never actually played the game himself:

"Gleeson agrees that Ablett spun to minimise contact, but questions whether Ablett could have avoided Shiel entirely. He says a player of Ablett's "nimble feet and dexterity" should be able to do that."

Why leap in the first place? Reckon he intended to collect Shiel hard and thought better of it, but too late to avoid contact.

He explains this:

"I was trying to minimise the contact,. What I remember was I was chasing my man inside 50, and was in two minds – I saw Dylan running through the middle of the ground and I had to make a decision to leave my man and cover that space … my intention was to tackle him and last minute he was a metre or two away, and I realised he handballed the ball. We were both moving fast and I realized we were going to run into each other. I made the decision to spin away from him … to minimise the contact. I felt at the time that I did a pretty good job.

"If I had kept my feet on the ground, we would have run into each other pretty hard and done damage to both of us."

The dual Brownlow winner says he was "pretty close to top speed" as he ran towards Shiel.

He says he stepped around the umpire, and that his intention was to tackle Shiel.
"It all happened pretty quickly," he says.
"If I could tackle him, he wouldn't be able to hand the ball over to my opponent (who was running into space)."

He says Shiel "was moving pretty quickly as well".

"When he received the ball, he closed down that space between us pretty quickly as well…which I didn’t expect him to do," he said.

"As a left footer, he wanted to turn to his left side, which is why there wasn’t as much time … not a lot of time to make a decision."

That's a pretty fair explanation IMO

So he was going to launch a flying tackle? Or he jumped to avoid shoulder to shoulder contact?

It doesn’t add up. Think Geelong have botched this.

Lol, no. He jumped so it wouldn't be a collision. Was basically trying to pull out of the contact, to avoid damage to either player. That's exactly what it looked like at the time, with the flailing clumsy arms, and that's what it should be adjudicated as. Don't think they've botched anything tbh. Makes perfect sense

Agreed, we should have appealed.

I really hope Ablett (and other players) don't get suspended for minor incidents such as these.

Well I don’t often get the Tribunal or MRO right, so you could be right.

FWIW I didn’t think it warranted suspension in the first place.

Just a decision to create a media frenzy imo. Even the commentators said there was nothing in it. Nothing in the medical report, ball was in play, not much outrage from the oppo players, was clearly not intentional, a fine and play on.

Not Guilty. Justice is served

"Gary Ablett has been found NOT guilty of 'intentional' conduct by the AFL Tribunal. His impeccable Match Review record remains."

His impeccable record doesn't remain as he was found guilty of careless conduct.

Might be bad luck but it's still an elbow to the head and that under the tribunal guidelines constitutes a 1 week suspension.

The argument that posters are making that it was a brushing motion is also flawed as his left hand if the one that brushes his face, the right elbow is what connects and it's a high shot.

:)...

Mate. Justice was just handed down.

Ablett off the hook for unintentional conduct.

The right thing was done in the end.
