I am a customer. I have the choice of 100's of venues and I pay more for eating out in Australia than almost any place on Earth and our minimum pay is the highest of any country in the world. Our hospitality staff (by world standards) are very well paid and ludicrously earn additional pay for working at times when most people use their services (nights & weekends).

I have no stats to back me up on this, but in my travelling experiences there are many other Western Countries where food is much more expensive than in Australia.

Well, there are some parts of Europe on which I would tend to agree.

That said, in context of what I was saying, the point remains valid. We pay a lot and the employees earn a lot by global standards - so any argument that says they are shortchanged on tips or working conditions ignores reality.

Lets say we are in the Top 10 most expensive countries, you reckon we get Top 10 service by world standards?

World is in financial crise, most of countries are in recession. For 2008, an estimated 2.6 million U.S. jobs were eliminated. In Russia only in december 2008 1.0 million jobs were eliminated. Learn how to survive and play virtual stock exchange trading with stocks and goods. Only the best wins!

I used to manage a liquor store and the first thing the owner told me when I took over is that he would always back me in any dispute with customers because he understood how many d1ckheads you have to put up with.

One random story that comes to mind:

This lady came in to buy a $10 cask of wine. She handed me her card and asked me to make it up to $50 total. I went to hand her her $40 change and she got all aggro saying she had asked for $50.

I apologised and explained that I must have misunderstood - even though I was pretty sure the misunderstanding was on her behalf. I offered to do another cash out transaction if she needed the extra money.

Then she flipped out and started yelling and swearing at me about how I was trying to steal money off her even though I showed her the receipt. Probably a waste of time because I doubt she could read anyway.

So in the end I just said "Look, do you want your f**king money or not?" She launched one more tirade of abuse at me and stormed out with her cask.

So I just shrugged and put her $40 in my pocket.

That reminds me of a customer I had.

He'd ordered two pots of draught so I told him that would be $7.60. He gave me a tenner, I gave him $2.40 change, and turned my back to clean some glasses and whatever as there was no other customers.

When I finish (10 seconds later and turn back around) he's still there. He says to me:

"Last time I got two pots it was $6.80." -basically accusing me of stealing his money.
"I'm sorry mate, it's always been $7.60, if you were given two pots earlier for $6.80 you were very lucky and got a discount."
"Last time it was $6.80.. It should still be $6.80..."
"Hold on, I'll grab the receipt."
I print the reciept.
I show it him the reciept.
He turns and walks away.
He offers nothing in any form of an apology.

^Some people are just too egotistical.

Fair enough if he was wrong, but the way in which he reacted to being wrong - egotistical.

He came to the bar I was in 4 more times that day, each time ordering the same beer I had recommeneded. The girl that I was working served him 3 times and recieved $30 in tips from him, because she's a great looking girl - believe me, the service was no where near being special.

I served him once in between those 3 times. Nothing.

^Those customers aren't worth fretting over.

Take comfort in the fact that he IS the type of person extremely vulnerable to being pussywhipped and having a woman unworthy of respect take him for all he's worth.
