It's always interesting to see how perceptions of a junior changes over time. This time last year both were considered potential first round picks and Nancarrow was rated the higher of the two as the starting CHF in the U16 AA team while Lombard only just made the U16 AA team being named on the interchange. Now it seems like Lombard is the higher rated of the two and Nancarrow seems to be falling behind as an undersized ruck/key forward. Both are athletically gifted but you just get the feeling that if Nancarrow stays around the 193cm mark then we're probably going to have another 192cm utility Joel Jeffrey on our hands instead of a 197cm key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan that people had hoped Nancarrow would become. That's how much of a difference a few centimetres can make at the AFL level, particularly with key position players. Lombard's height was also a concern at one stage but he's up around the 178cm mark now which is taller than Lachie Neale so he should be fine.

I still think at least one of them will end up being a top 10 pick next year but it's also worth noting that they've taken very different paths on the way to their draft year. Lombard has stuck true to the Gold Coast pathway with Burleigh/Broadbeach whereas Cairns native Nancarrow will have spent four years boarding at Scotch College by the end of next year and progressed through the Victorian junior pathway with Oakleigh. Then you've got Boston Everitt who has sort of done both by playing junior footy for Southport prior to this year but has been living in Melbourne in 2023 and will take part in the top level Victorian competitions next year. I believe Boston will remain in our academy next year and I dare say with Dimma on board, we're now a far better chance of convincing him to join us instead of going father-son to the Saints. If all three of Lombard, Nancarrow and Everitt develop into first round picks like we've seen this year with Walter, Read and Rogers then it could get a little awkward on draft night but I'm sure we can get creative with trades to ensure we retain all of them.

Lastly, I wonder if Dimma plans on speaking to Kalani White in an attempt to sway his decision towards us instead of the Dees in two years from now. Kalani's talent is obvious after he was selected as one of the U16 AA key defender this year and I assume there are already plans in place for him to move down south at some point over the next 18 months but Dimma just seems to have a way of convincing people to commit to him and perhaps he can sprinkle a bit of his magic in this situation to keep Kalani on the Gold Coast long-term. I previously held low hopes of convincing prospective father-son picks with other clubs like Everitt and White to choose us instead of their father's club but having Hardwick at our disposal has injected some optimism in this area IMO. It'll be a fascinating watch either way.
Re: White - there were mumurings on the draft board that his AA was un-deserved. More on name than performance. Time will tell I guess.

Seems like there are enough quality players coming through that "losing" the father/son players may not really matter. If the Suns make finals next year they can only match one or two in the first round anyway.

2025 I'm pretty sure
Yeah, that's why I'm confused. I believe Uwland, White, Addinsall, Patterson, Murray and Zak Eckersly will all be out with the U18 Boys in 2024. Surely they're not all underagers are they? Leo Lombard and Nancarrow are in 2024 but thought a few of these boys would also have reached the age for drafting at the end of 2024. Happy to be proven wrong - it just makes 2024 AND 2025 strong years. There's probably a couple of other names that'll pop up next year as well.

2025 is a very strong year for us going off current performance.

That is also my opinion Uwland and Addinsall are far better IMO

Plus Max Hudson for 2025.

Then, Jackson Jarvis for 2026 and Jai’s brother, Taj, for 2027.

Why? Aren't most first round draftee's extended quickly anyway?

Must have other clubs telling him they want him too.

They way it was told to me was “he wants 4 years to stop him going to the draft” but it is very 3rd (or 4th) hand so I didn’t read into it to much…

I may be wrong, but don’t academy players have to agree to being drafted to their Northern team in order to be eligible to be involved in the academy program?

Seems odd that Rogers would demand a 4 year deal.

Although a 4 year initial contract for a 1st round draft pick gives us much more flexibility in terms of keeping them early on, even if they are all locals and unlikely to be poached.

My info is very chinese whispers. I was taking with a friends son who knows Jake Rogers and Leo Lombard.

Rogers can piss right off..
Who does he think he is.

Go all in on wizard Watson instead
Got plenty of Suns academy talents coming in the future
Do you realize that clubs actually want to change rules and be able to sign first round picks for min 3-4 years? Very rarely draftees agree at the moment. Daicos did, Jeffrey did (Suns jumped at the opportunity according to Cameron). Maybe Rogers wants security, who knows the motivation. Surely, the club would be happy to do it for 9-12 pick.

Exactly, why would anyone think it's a bad thing?

Unless he's asking for massive money in years 3 + 4.

I hope that's Dylan :)

Not sure if this is well known but Dylan Patterson also plays rugby league for PBC and played fullback for the Reds in their victorious Walters Cup (U16 state grand final) team this week. So we could have a fight on our hands to retain him...

Perhaps. Time will tell but given we've got three potential F/S picks coming through our academy over the next two years with Boston Everitt (St Kilda/2024), Joe Kennedy (Brisbane/2024) and Kalani White (Melbourne/2025), this is an area Dimma will have to look into at some stage. Kalani appears to be the most highly rated of the three at this stage so I wouldn't be surprised if the club has already informed Hardwick about his predicament with the Dees.

You're right. Rogers is in no position to dictate anything and must make himself available to us as an academy pick should we be interested in drafting him. I think the more likely scenario is the club has pushed all three academy boys to sign four year contracts instead of the standard two years. It's definitely a good thing, particularly given the fact that they aren't in a position to ask for ridiculous money.
