When our list concessions reduce (if we do well this year, assuming 2025) we won’t be able to take 3-4 Academy graduates every year anyway. The overflow could potentially end up at Melb clubs, so don’t know what the whinge is about.

Just remember that restriction only applies to matching bids and we always reserve the right to draft our academy players with actual picks. For example, had we finished in the 5-8th range last year then we would've only been able to match bids for Walter (3) + Read (9) and then it would be on us to put together a live trade to secure Roger before the pick 14 bid came through. So there are still mechanisms to retain our acadedmy talent even if we are bound by these finals restrictions.

Was more thinking towards our ability to keep Academy kids every year when our overall list numbers go back to normal. Or are have we already had our extra list spots removed?
Possibly keep some on as VFL only players?

Marsh AFL National Academy Boys to take on Bulldogs VFL

The 2024 Marsh AFL National Academy Boys squad will represent Australia for the second time this month when they take on VFL ladder-leader Footscray at Mission Whitten Oval this Saturday, April 27

Leo Lombard will again suit up for the Australian U18 team when they take on the Footscray VFL team on Saturday morning at 11am. Considering Lombard has already played a fair few VFL games and is even a VFL premiership player, it probably won't take him that long to adjust to the level like it may for other U18 players. Lombard was pretty good for the Australian team two weeks ago when they played the Coburg VFL team and another strong performance in this game should really ram home the point that he is a top 10 prospect.

Zeke Uwland, Koby Coulson and Dylan Patterson standing out but all playing well. Dylan Patterson is an absolute star in the making....pink boots and all!

Would be awesome to read more about Patterson if you're willing to share. My understanding is he's the one with the highest ceiling/most x factor from our stellar '25 draft crop. Lightning quick and serious hops from what I've heard.

25 touches and 6 goals as a bottom ager!?!? Wowza. Even against an Oakleigh B team that's a very impressive stat line. I've read that Zeke has exceptional foot skills and was named on the wing in the U16 AA team last year so it's probably fair to say that he's a fairly quick runner. I know he's been used on the half back line recently and that's probably because of his foot skills but it sounds like he was given freedom to roam between the midfield and forward line yesterday.

Can someone who attended the game confirm where Zeke played? Did he rotate between the wing and forward line?

He seemed to be everywhere but predominantly mid and forward. Some great perormances by almost the whole side - regardless of who or who wasn't playing. Leo Lombard was with the Nat'l Academy, Oscar Woods injured - Zac Eckersley and Snowy couldn't even make the team. The future is very bright if they can continue to attack the ball like they did.

As for what Georja could look like as a player, Darcie likened her to a Carlton Brownlow medallist.

“I really rate her, I think she’s amazing, for someone that big and tall, she’s like a Patty Cripps,” Darcie said.

“She plays like an inside mid, I can’t wait for it to be her draft year, hopefully she comes to the Suns.

“Playing alongside her would be amazing just because of how smart she is with the footy and also just how she works and trains to get to the level she can play at.”

Under-18 girl’s academy coach Jess Sedunary, who doubles as the AFLW forwards coach, had high praise for both Darcie and Georja.

“The thing that I love about both of them is their desire and want to get better and to find different ways to get better … they both really love it,” Sedunary said.

“When an athlete has that mindset and attitude it’s very exciting, the sky’s the limit.

“To see them play together as players I think would be pretty scary because they’ve both got height and competitiveness.”

Sedunary echoed Darcie’s sentiment about her younger sister, adding that she believed Georja would be an “unreal” talent when she gets to AFLW level.

“She’s very elite in the way she does everything, it’s not just her on-field stuff, whether it’s learning structures or drills, being a good teammate, having a good voice at training, she’s the whole package,” Sedunary said.

Under-18 boy’s academy coach Jarrod Cotton described the Uwland’s as a talented family, noting that Zeke had already cracked the leadership group despite being underage.

“Zeke’s a really good player so I’m excited what the future could hold for him too … there’s been a lot of hard work for him,” Cotton said.

While the pair are both defenders, Cotton noted how their contrasting game styles could complement each other if given the chance to shine in the same backline.

“(Zeke) can play through the midfield but we use him more as a running defender, he’s a really good kick and makes pretty good decisions when he gets the ball in his hands,” Cotton said.

“He’s a different style player to Bodhi, Bodhi’s really good overhead, more of a stronger player where Zeke’s more of a running player.

“They’re both different players but very talented.”

“If they both get to play AFL footy together, playing with your family at that level is pretty special.

I watched the game. Started midfield, then high forward. Also 5 rebound 50s so must’ve covered the ground
