St Lawrence are through to the AFLQ Schools GF (Loaded with those Brisbane academy guys)

Palm Beach boys later on today in prime time. However, Dylan Patterson not named, I assume injury. If they win we’ll know on Sunday. Still got Taj Murray, Zac Eckersley, Heathcote and more importantly Jai Murray

Can’t believe All Saints got rolled in the earlier round, team was loaded
By St Laurence's, who were also stacked with Brisbane Lions academy players. Lauries are now in the final so they are no joke. Hopefully All Saints give it another go next year.

So our U18 and U16s academy preseason squads have been announced for 2025:

How are coach Kaesler's sons? Any good?
Believe they have been in the academy for several years, but haven't been selected in rep teams beyond that. Jason Cloke, Travis Cloke's brother, also has a son in our academy - Harry Cloke. Fortunately for us, Jason didn't play 100 games for Collingwood so his son is open for the taking.

There's a 3rd brother.

Cameron.
It's good to see sons of former AFL players in our academy, particularly ones that didn't play 100 games and aren't father-son tied to another club. That will help us build our local footy culture with more and more former AFL players getting involved at the grassroots level. Jason Cloke has been playing for the Broady Cats for years so he's already done his bit for the community and hopefully his son ends up developing into an AFL talent to continue the connection.

Awesome win. Considering the breeze. Didn’t try to “hang on”. Just played smart quick footy into breeze for the last quarter and Palm Beach got it done
Future for footy on the Gold Coast looking good.....

Gee whiz! Complete domination from PBC at all four secondary levels. A good portion of those victorious PBC teams are a part of our academy like recent U17 Futures game participant Jai Murray. His younger brother Taj Murray was also in that victorious seniors team. The standard of the AFLQ Schools Cup must be getting a lot better these days with so many academy players from both the Suns and Lions zones taking part.

Interesting to note that all the schools that were victorious in the state cup GFs are based on the southern Gold Coast. The Burleigh Bombers, Broadbeach and PBC are really leading the charge in terms of producing high quality juniors these days.

Thanks Jen2310. I agree with their breakdown that it was surprising to see Addinsall not get selected for the Allies this year. Not really sure how Kalani White made the team and Addinsall didn't...

Cue the whinging....
We're very unlikely to get Kalani White so that decreases it to three and if we make the finals then we can only match bids on two of them. If everything goes right and we finish top 4, then we can only match a bid on one of them. I think we have to prepare ourselves for the very real possibility that we're likely to lose at least one highly rated academy prospect next year.

I don't know how White keeps getting selected, even mentioned here lol I'm not sure he is that good, at least from what I've seen.

There's an old saying in the NBA when it comes to the draft and it goes 'you can't teach 7ft'. That might be what we're seeing here with Kalani, but in this case it's probably more 'you can't teach 200cm'. There's also a strong desire from those connected to the Dees to see a high quality F/S pick come through and perhaps some favours have been called in when it comes to rep selection. It's probably the best example of nepotism that we've seen in the AFL for a while.

Thats very true. You can't teach height, players like this just become project players to see if they can get to the level.

can always select with our own picks, we have 3 firsts

More kids v playing finals for a chance at a flag. I know for people would prefer. But its a situation other sides have been in, the sacrifice you have to make. Not being able to get them all for one reason or another (whether its this rule, or list spots)
But it's a good problem to have I suppose.

If you look at him like a project player because of his height, then it makes sense. Like 202cm Kurt Tippett when he gave Aussie rules a go in year 12 at school (funnily enough, the same school Kalani attends) and was discovered by a Queensland AFL rep that asked him to trial for the Gold Coast Stingrays team. Obviously the rep liked what he saw in terms of his height and athleticism, but Kurt couldn't kick a ball properly for a while (by his own admission). It didn't hold him back though because less than two years later he ends up on Adelaide's list.

So I guess the hope with Kalani is that he'll eventually get there if he keeps playing against high level compeition, like we saw with Kurt Tippett all those years ago. It's worth the investment if you end up with a talented tall like Mac Andrew at the end of it all.

It's just the reality of running a northern academy. We've seen it with Brisbane losing players like Mabior Chol and Noah Cumberland. Although I think being able to trade a further year into the future from next season onwards opens the door a bit more to hold onto these academy prospects should the club want to do so. There's no restriction on using your own pick and the live trading on draft night means there's no reason you couldn't trade a 2027 first round pick for pick 10 and use it to draft a player like Beau Addinsall if we're unable to match bids due to the finals restriction in place.

Yup, and since we'll be able to trade two years into the future next year, it should be easier to keep our academy stars if we want to. I'd certainly be making sure we secure Uwland and Addinsall at the bare minimum. Would like to keep Patterson too but he may be the one we end up losing if we can't manufacture a trade.

That's true. The trading 2 years into the future gives clubs more area of scope for certain things. Or even to use it in the trade period to trade 2 firsts for a player. But can work in this sense also, on the chance someone in the first round would move out of the 1st round for.a future pick.

AFL Academy announced
Zeke Uwland
Beau Addinsall
Dylan Patterson
Kalani White (somehow)

Murray misses out which is a bit disappointing, means we will probably see even more of him than normal at VFL level

It's pretty incredible that Zeke Uwland keeps getting mentioned as the star of this draft class. He's literally the only player mentioned in the first sentence of that article and the first video is also a Zeke highlight. Maybe we really do have our very own Nick Daicos coming through the academy?

It's a shame that Murray has fallen away, but it also means we should be able to pick him up later in the draft without any dramas. Right now Uwland and Addinsall are the brightest prospects and Patterson could be the one that we really struggle to keep our hands on. Having said that, Patterson is probably more the type of player that Dimma would actually want in the team so he might be prioritised. Kalani has a decision to make and I'm still convinced he'll pick the Dees over us, but there is some merit to picking him up if we want a long-term key defender placement for Collins now that he's 30. That's assuming Kalani kicks on from here because right now I don't think he's at the level he should be in order to be considered a first round prospect.
