Academy boys will be playing Northern in the Coates League soon. Not expecting much considering the best three players were all in Adelaide yesterday but you never know.

I think I read Rogers played well for the AFL Academy yesterday. Anyone know how Read or Walter went?

Absolute train wreck of a first quarter. 40 points to zip.
Hate to be a forward in this team, can’t get it past halfway. Weather is atrocious, which doesn’t help.

In reality it should be a Qld team (combined Suns and Lions) playing in this league. We simply do not have the talent in Qld to field competitive standalone teams.

Not sure I agree with that in our case. We always seem to have a pretty steady flow of national standouts at U14, U15 & U16s levels. It's between the U16 - U18 period that we fall away and you saw Will Ashcroft prove that theory correct when he continued his AA form all the way from the U15s when he was in our academy until the draft last year when he was taken with pick #2. I'm pretty sure if Ashcroft had stayed in Queensland then he wouldn't have gone that high in the draft. We saw it many times with players like Brad Scheer being very highly rated at the U16s level and falling away in his draft year.

The only way we're going to drastically improve the standard of junior Queensland footy between the U16 - U18 period is by regularly competing against the best U18 players in the country. We've seen how much of a difference its made by having Brisbane, Southport and us in the VFL for a few years and now all three Queensland-based VFL teams are thriving. It may take a few years but I do believe the Queensland academies will eventually adjust to the standard of footy played in Victoria and the game will be better for it.

It's also worth mentioning that the travel factor is huge at that level and our academy actually beat one of the NAB League teams when they travelled to Queensland last year, but this year it's just games in Melbourne which is a huge ask for our boys. Some of these boys are just 15 years old and are playing against potential top 10 picks who are probably already good enough to play in the AFL. Will Ashcroft was running around in the NAB League this time last year but was definitely already good enough to play in the AFL and that's a pretty daunting prospect for a 15/16 year old who has flown down from Queensland. Give it time.

Does anyone have the final score? ..even a report would be good. Seems like the boys started strong but have really struggled against the Vic sides. Positive early season signs have been smashed a bit. Not much talk about Jed Walter and Ethan Reid. Are they finding it much tougher? Jake Rogers (I think) is coming back from numerous niggles and not much on Wil Graham either. Maybe we were a little excited a little early on our Academy boys?

Scouting Notes: AFL Academy vs. Port Adelaide SANFL

Here's some info. Seems like Rogers was definitely the standout of the three.

Jake Rogers
Defying his size as a relative full-time midfielder, Rogers was another who made his mark upon being introduced in the second quarter. He hunted with speed at stoppage and applied pressure on Port’s ball winners, doing his best to hang onto them in tackles. When he won the ball himself, Rogers moved it on quickly and looked for pockets of space to navigate through, though they were hard to come by. He had a few nice moments in the second half, including a sharp candy sell and a nice left-foot snap goal to put the cherry on top of his performance.
Ethan Read
In a similar vein to Edwards, Read’s best contributions were around the ground with some clean pick-ups at ground level and good use by hand when he got hold of it.
Jed Walter
Like majority of the other talls, Walter found it difficult to be consistently involved in the contest, though not through lack of effort. Walter worked up onto the wing at times, rarely rewarded for the effort though it didn’t deter him. Walter did manage to hit the scoreboard, running onto a loose ball in the goalsquare and soccering it through off the ground.

That's OK considering who was out

Unfortunately, Accepting a 70point drubbing is OK is part of GCS's problem.

This is the clubs 3rds in league speak, or u19's in old VFL speak.

A very important component of a club.

Knights arent that good and had players playing for 'australia' also.

GC arrived in melbourne at midday for a 1430 bounce. Thats not giving them any chance.

On 'Australia' V port 2nds - i watched this closely - rogers was really good. So busy and intense around the ball and hos ball use great.

harley reid is a freak of nature - he was fending off AFL listed big men like mitch geordiades

Hes probably a once a generation player, who could turn a clubs fortunes.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your perspective,

GC could land pick 1 and nab him

SUNS Academy trio Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Jake Rogers all took the field in the AFL Academy's 13-point loss to the Magpies.

Both Walter and Rogers hit the scoreboard for the AFL Academy with the former, a 194cm key forward prospect, earning praise for his work rate throughout the contest.

Rogers was introduced in the second quarter and played the bulk of his game time in the midfield with a neat left-foot snap in the second half the cherry on top of his performance.

202cm ruck Read showed his talents both in the air and on the ground, showing a clean pair of hands at ground level and good use by hand.

The AFL Academy Boys squad will take part in a third camp in Melbourne in May.

#9 Jake Rogers — 8/10

Forward/midfielder, 172cm, Suns Academy/Allies

Rogers had been flying under the radar a touch – he didn’t have a manager until he was snapped up by Kapital Sports Group last week – but this performance is sure to grab the attention of recruiters. The Suns Academy prospect turned heads with his defensive pressure and speed, with a rundown tackle in the second term along with a dummy handball and burst away from a Port tackler highlighting his x-factor. Rogers capped his night with a banana set shot goal tucked up in the pocket from 35m, set up by another defensive effort, which forced a Port player to give away a free kick for insufficient intent. The speedy 172cm product finished with 12 disposals, seven tackles and three clearances, but his influence was far greater than that.

#32 Ethan Read – 6/10

Ruck, 202cm, Suns Academy/Allies

Was the most impressive of the three Academy ruckmen, covering the ground well and competed hard in the ruck. Started the match with a strong tackle on Hayes that was given holding the ball, and laid a desperate tackle deep in defence in the last quarter to force a stoppage. The Suns Academy talent finished with 59 SuperCoach points from five disposals and five hit-outs, illustrating his high-impact per possession.

#34 Jed Walter — 5.5/10

Key forward, 195cm, Suns Academy/Allies

Walter kicked his side’s second goal of the match, running onto a dribble snap from Ashton Moir and soccering it off the deck from close range. Threw his weight around in one repeat effort in the second quarter, crunching an opponent and then following up with a sprint effort.

Interesting that Twomey said he doesn't think Rogers "is in the same ball park as Jed Walter or Ethan Read at the very top end of the draft". That's the first time I've heard Read referred to as a high end prospect. Is Read bolting into the top 15 calculations? Last time I looked he was rated around the 30 mark in the phantom drafts but the breakdown of the game above does suggest Read is the highest rated ruckman in this year's draft as of right now. So it's probably fair to say that, as of right now, the top rated key forward AND ruckman in this year's draft are both in our academy, along with a very handy small mid-forward.

If Walter and Read both end up being bid on with top 10 picks then this could get very difficult for us to keep all three guys...

We can always trade 2024 picks into 2023.
Our 2023 first rounder might be pretty high as well so gives plenty of options re splitting. Wil be fine IMO

We have a good amount of points already and it's pretty easy to increase that, teams that don't need the points are always looking to get up the order, so if we don't plan on using our first rounder clubs will bundle up a massive amount of picks/ points for it. Even a second round pick can be turned into a heap of late picks. You can bank on a late pick for sharp also. Still very early but something like 5,15 and 30 seems possible for the 3 of them, not sure how many points that would be.

So did some research, as it stands we have 4857 points but expecting to move up the ladder so could be less by draft time.
If they go at 5,15,30 that would require approximately 3600 points
Worst case they go 2,10,20 looking at around 4800 points.

Read feels like a bolter were Walter feels like a slider. Be interesting to see how they both are ranked after the champs.
Don't think Walter will slide too much purely due to his athletic profile and size.

Haven't followed much of Jake Rogers, much similarities to Errol Gulden? From what i've put together he's a skilled small mid with a left foot in the 30's range.

Would love an Errol Gulden type

We'd be very happy if he was that good. Not sure he is just yet but he's certainly a player.

He is a right footer. Kinda more explosive than gulden, but pretty short, a nice kick though. I actually can't think of a player that is a good comparison, maybe a Flanders type, with a bit more zip.
