Is that for certain? I heard that it was only speculation on the back of union action or something like that

No, not for certain just yet, however UNISA wants to buy every building around City West, they already own a few that aren't being used. It would appear the plans have already been made....

Still wont be for many years before any action actually happens so hopefully the transport system is improved before then.

If only they would buy that friggin car park next to the bus terminus so I didn't have to pay $15 to park if I feel lazy and dont park near Adelaide High.

I do not think light rail could come close to supporting the NE's needs at peak times.

Would it really be that different to the SW ie the Glenelg tramline?

It has Glenelg at the end of it which is quite a high density area and low to medium density suburbs all the way along its route.

The O Bahn is a 5 minute Go Zone on weekdays during the day compared with the tramline 20minute. During peak times you have the tram come past every 12-17 minutes whilst the OBahn generally has about 30 plus busses per hour or more go through there during the morning or night averaging say 2 minutes between busses at its peak.

They also have a range of express busses that could not operate in the way they do on a light rail network.

If you have ever been at Tea Tree Plaza at 7:30-8:30am on a weekday you will witness a huge lineup of people having to wait multiple busses just to squeeze on one. Thank god its only 2-3 mins between them rather than 10-15.

Our trams are massively overratted in capability especially our newer slimmer ones.

I should mention are the trams capable of 100kph? What is there average speed 60? I would estimate the OBahn has an average speed limit of 80kph.

The Glenelg line is restricted because they don't want Marion, Goodwood, Morphett roads et al constantly blocked by level crossing lights.

Maybe thats a fatal flaw in my idea, maybe it could be solved by grade separations. I don't know.

Anyway you raised some good points.

Rode the Belair line for the first time this afternoon on a 3000. Sat right up the front to take it in. Like no other suburban line when it comes to scenery. Nothing comes close. The journey back was a bit annoying with two separate stops for a few mins waiting for another train. One of those stops though was at a spot with a view of the city better than Windy Point. Demographics completely different to other lines too. Can see how it would get annoying with constant stop and waits when going to or from work though.

Noticed a few disused stations too, A couple right near houses before Unley Park on the way to Belair. Am guessing that is so Trains can go faster through that 1 track section to Mitcham where two trains could dodge each other.

Mitcham station looked really nice and same with the one right before Belair.

yea that was why they closed them - to avoid delays further along the line at Mitcham ... even tho there was complaints from locals who used them!

yea - the view of the city is terrific - I used to take my son up on the 'hill train' - as he called it, when he was 4-5yo ... loved it!

A couple of now demolished spurlines from the Gawler Central line

Penfield line (disused in 1991) - Closed due to low patronage and now an industrial estate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penfield_railway_line,_Adelaide. If they didn't build an industrial estate on it could have been revived with a growing Salisbury North population (I'm walking distance to what was Hilra station).

Northfield line (disused in 1987) - now a playground, BMX track, and Adelaide's new rail yard http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northfield_railway_line,_Adelaide.

GMH line (disused in 1992, only used during change of shifts at Holdens). The railway crossing is still rotting on Kettering Road http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.M.H._railway_station,_Adelaide

same area getting station upgrades ...

FOUR major railway stations on the Gawler line are set to receive long-awaited upgrades. The improvements come after $40 million was earmarked as part of the electrification of the northern line.

Nearly $16 million will be spent upgrading the Elizabeth railway station, $9.8 million on the Elizabeth South and Gawler stations and $13.8 million on the Munno Para station.

Commuters have long complained of the lack of parking, the poor safety measures and security risks at many of the Gawler line's ageing and, in some cases, dilapidated stations and platforms.

The Munno Para, Elizabeth South and Gawler station upgrades are expected to be completed by December, while the Elizabeth station will be completed in early 2012.

ADELAIDE'S danger trains are being blitzed by undercover Transit Police in moves to clean up public transport. It comes ahead of new $269 million fleet of electric trains that are set to hit the tracks in 2013.

The Department of Transport says the new electric trains will be Australia's safest and will feature enhanced CCTV coverage and a passenger emergency intercom at each doorway.

But the battle right now is for the department to retain patronage on Adelaide's worst train lines, where fearful passengers are turning away from public transport. Security guards have told The Advertiser that the Outer Harbor line is home to Adelaide's most dangerous rides, where even they are the target of attacks on an almost nightly basis.

had my 30th on the weekend, and i received as a present a piece of track that had been pulled up from the nourlunga line (through official channels)

it is incredibly heavy! the piece is only a couple of inches wide, weighs about 20kg

I think the worst experience of my commute would be getting off a train and waiting for a bus at Salisbury Interchange. That place is the worst interchange I know of at night. Most of my insults about that line are to do with incidents at the stations rather than actually on the trains. Still have to take a random ride on Outer Harbour to see the fuss!

One Sunday night got a train from town to Salisbury, but it broke down half way and limped to Salisbury, resulting in me missing my connecting bus.

Rather than risk my life waiting an hour for the next bus I decided to walk home - the safer option.

Have heard some dodgy noises coming out of Pittman Park at night.
