To coincide with this announcement, the Club’s General Manager of List and Recruiting, Adrian Dodoro, has made the decision to take a step back from his current senior role following this year’s NAB AFL National Draft. He will lead the Club through the upcoming 2023 Trade and Draft period in his current position prior to transitioning to and assisting Matt Rosa moving forward.
Dodoro, an Essendon Life Member, has played a significant role at the Bombers over nearly three decades and said the time was right to take a step back.
“I approached Craig back in April to discuss the concept of transition and I feel that now is the right time to make this decision,” Dodoro said.
"I sat on the panel to assist in the selection of Matt, and I believe he will be an outstanding acquisition to the Club for years to come. I look forward to working with Matt moving forward.
“These roles are very taxing on individuals and their families and it just feels like that. After nearly three decades and with stability in key roles at the Club, now is the right time for me to take a step back in to a role which will provide me and my family with a better work life balance.
“More immediately, we have an important few months coming up and I’m looking forward to playing my part to deliver a strong Trade and Draft period for the Club to ensure that the playing list is in a strong position for the future.”
Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo acknowledged the significant impact Dodoro has made at the Club since joining in a full-time role in 1998.
“Adrian is a highly respected Life Member of the Essendon Football Club and has made an enormous contribution to the Club and the wider AFL industry during his time in football, including assisting to navigate the Club through unprecedented and challenging periods,” Vozzo said.
“Throughout his time at the Bombers, Adrian’s commitment and passion to take the Club forward in its list management and recruiting, has been unquestionable. Some of the Champions of Essendon have been identified and selected by Adrian, and we will always be grateful for the important and enduring role he has played.
“On behalf of the entire Club, we would like to acknowledge Adrian’s selfless decision and we look forward to his ongoing contribution to the Club.
“Adrian will work with Matt to ensure a smooth hand-over and a successful transition of responsibilities.”

And how much of that failure is the recruiting team versus the entire Carlton coaching panel that got sacked?
Well we've kept our recruiting team for 20 years despite failure. 🤔

Have we actually though? Like yes Dodoro has been around a long time, but we've had turn-over in the others. From memory wasn't Merv Keane around a long time as well?
I don't know all the recruiters.

Just pointing out turning over coaches as the source of the problem is a very Essendon thing to do.

Somehow, despite the shit-show our coaching panel has been since Sheedy, I don't even think we've been the worst club for coaches.

Personally, I don't think any aspect of the football side of the club has been elite for 2 decades now; coaching, conditioning, recruiting and development have all been varying degrees of poor to average. Recruiting has probably been consistently the least bad of that lot over that time.

The way I understand it based on the docuvideo of last year's trade period:
  • Adrian Dodoro is head of list and recruiting, liaises with others in the club (Rutten, Mahoney, Campbell, Madden) and obviously does the wheeling and dealing for trades. I think he'd also be the one negotiating with player managers to re-sign the ones we already have too, keeping contact with players we wanted to draft previously, and would be present at draft interviews.
  • Rob Forster-Knight is national recruiting manager, he's focused on draft stuff and I think liaises with scouts. He's been at the club for ages and was a protege of Dodoro, but has been promoted into this role relatively recently and now has a lot of influence in his own right over that part of our recruitment strategy.
  • Georgia Harvey is or was the list and recruiting administrator, duties seem obvious but not to be underrated, keeps things running smoothly. She's also our player contract manager for the AFLW and VFLW teams now, which would be an expanding role I think.
  • Mark Harvey is in a part-time pro-scouting role combined with part-time liaison with coteries and past players etc? Obviously not new to the club but new to the recruiting department this year after moving out of coaching.
We'd have other scouts and such, including Ridley's old man, but I think they're more external and based interstate, or potentially volunteers.

I think Eddie McGuire's documentary thing of the trade period might give us some more insight as well?

Merv was 2007 until 2018 or 2019. Can not remember exactly the year. Rob Foster Knight worked with Merv for a few years and has taken over his role.

Life Membership!

Alongside de Morton, general manager of list and recruiting Dodoro was inducted a life member in recognition for his contribution to the club over the past two decades.

The long-serving and colourful administrator has been instrumental in identifying, recruiting and nurturing the Bombers’ young talent.

Club legend Kevin Sheedy gave Dodoro his start at the Bombers when he presented the young Essendon fan an opportunity to assist in the coaches box.

And in 1998, Dodoro officially started his reign leading the Bombers' recruiting, selecting the great Dean Rioli with his first-ever selection.

Throughout his time at the Bombers, Dodoro’s passion to take the club forward in its list management and recruiting has been unquestionable.

To this day, he maintains strong relationships with Essendon's past and present players.

Imagine being at a club for 25+ years and not contributing to a single flag.

What's even more atrocious is that only a single final was won since that article.

This man must own naked pictures of everyone at the club or something.
He was the Premiership coaches personal assistant when we won in 2000. :p

I thought he started as a volunteer when he was a kid and has been here ever since.

Started transcribing notes for Sheeds well before 2000. Literally just writing down what he was saying in the box.

Early signs from RFK is that even though he has only worked under Dodoro the type of footballer he goes for is quite different to Dodo which either way speaks to less Dodoro influence, it’s either more of Rutten having a say or more of RFK.

Having said that the mob driving the car is still the Dodoro mob so it’s all sins of the father type stuff probably for the next 18 months or so.

Cockroaches and Dodoro will be all that remains after Putin nukes us.
150th year and both are sides are putrid thanks to this list that the rodeo clown has assembled. Should have been marched out of the place years ago but this weak board will probably sack Rutten and appoint Dodoro coach.
Time to go Adrian and take your spineless mate Xavier with you
