Cliff notes:

  • Transition plan, raised the possibility with Vozzo in April
  • Replacement is Matt Rosa, whose thread is here: Welcome to Essendon Matthew Rosa – AFL Talent & Operations Manager!
Full text from media release said:
To coincide with this announcement, the Club’s General Manager of List and Recruiting, Adrian Dodoro, has made the decision to take a step back from his current senior role following this year’s NAB AFL National Draft. He will lead the Club through the upcoming 2023 Trade and Draft period in his current position prior to transitioning to and assisting Matt Rosa moving forward.
Dodoro, an Essendon Life Member, has played a significant role at the Bombers over nearly three decades and said the time was right to take a step back.
“I approached Craig back in April to discuss the concept of transition and I feel that now is the right time to make this decision,” Dodoro said.
"I sat on the panel to assist in the selection of Matt, and I believe he will be an outstanding acquisition to the Club for years to come. I look forward to working with Matt moving forward.
“These roles are very taxing on individuals and their families and it just feels like that. After nearly three decades and with stability in key roles at the Club, now is the right time for me to take a step back in to a role which will provide me and my family with a better work life balance.
“More immediately, we have an important few months coming up and I’m looking forward to playing my part to deliver a strong Trade and Draft period for the Club to ensure that the playing list is in a strong position for the future.”
Essendon CEO Craig Vozzo acknowledged the significant impact Dodoro has made at the Club since joining in a full-time role in 1998.
“Adrian is a highly respected Life Member of the Essendon Football Club and has made an enormous contribution to the Club and the wider AFL industry during his time in football, including assisting to navigate the Club through unprecedented and challenging periods,” Vozzo said.
“Throughout his time at the Bombers, Adrian’s commitment and passion to take the Club forward in its list management and recruiting, has been unquestionable. Some of the Champions of Essendon have been identified and selected by Adrian, and we will always be grateful for the important and enduring role he has played.
“On behalf of the entire Club, we would like to acknowledge Adrian’s selfless decision and we look forward to his ongoing contribution to the Club.
“Adrian will work with Matt to ensure a smooth hand-over and a successful transition of responsibilities.”

Fair point. I think our interest in Thomas is being driven by Scott.

With Dodoro staying, I just think it may hamper negotiations for trades because there would still be some bad blood around.

That’s just my impression though. Previous bad experiences may not have any impact in future dealings 🤷🏻‍♀️
Scott and Vozzo seem tight, and Dodoro reports to Vozzo
If Scott says give up pick 8 for Thomas, Dodoro will have to do it.

Also, outside McWhiney, i don't think there's any bad blood out there.

Surely they wouldn't do that. Pick 8 for Thomas who's faced criminal charges and had to take time off footy because of that.?

Also, if the scenario plays out like you've described, then surely Dodo has to be gone after this draft/trade period. It really sounds like he's not doing much other than holding the white board these days if all of these changes are true. Can't really be worth is salary, which as a GM I suspect is going to be very costly.

Was just about to post this as well. That is a very sobering read. Almost feels like Twomey himself is getting fed up and so decided to write that.

It shows how important recruiting is and that we absolutely have to start getting these decisions right. We haven't and here we are.

There should be no more excuses. Our recruiting has been a disaster.

I’ve still seen people defend it because “they’re all later picks, what more could be done?”

Yeah, they’re later picks because we traded out our first round picks for three years.

  • Stringer, Saad and Smith 2017 (first and second rounders I think)
  • Shiel - 2018 (Two first rounders)
  • Caldwell - 2021 (two second rounders).

It’s almost like we got things backwards. Should have hit the draft in 17,18,19 when the talent pool had depth.

The year we have 3 first rounders, it was pretty speculative because of Covid. That may have been an opportunity to trade in established players.

This isn’t just on Dodoro though. It’s our entire list strategy

its only been a disaster for about 15 years! have faith in Dudoro, he'll deliver the goods! 🙄 #Sa#sackdodoro

From 2:17 to about 4:38, they basically blame our issues on recruiting.

I can’t remember a time in the media where this much heat has been on dodo. Still not enough imo.

Buckley reckons we've been recruiting for speed yet we still seem extremely one-paced lol

It's so true. Reminds me of part of Silk's preview for the Collingwood match:

"We are consistently smaller than other teams, but somehow those bigger players also outrun us and are faster than us."

Another part of the imbalance in recent years is our small guys all too often aren't physical, can't tackle and have poor disposal. Really good teams might have a soft player but they will only be tolerated based on game breaking traits - for example Hill during Hawthorn's threepeat with his run and disposal. I could see Liam Henry eventually being in the same category.

What exactly does it mean that Scott and Vozzo will be taking a more "hands-on" role in regards to recruiting and how does it align with how top clubs operate? I'm not sure I see the logic in keeping the same recruiting team but also not having enough confidence in them that you want more control of the department.

How the shit would Scott or Vozzo know how top clubs operate?

Looking at those stats, could an untrained big footy nuffie actually do any worse over that past 5 year period?
