The rules are not at all helpful, or conducive to consistency. They too should be overhauled. The whole sport needs a review top to bottom. Having the whole sport being the same body as the highest competition is stupid imo.
Subtitles plz...

But it is...
All Corporations try to do this..
Politics as well...
Typical management style...
It’s stupid when there’s conflicting interests though. Gill’s trying to grow the game (and fair enough too), but it’s compromising the aim of the AFL (the football league). All the rule changes and new formats are all about making the product more presentable to an audience that just doesn’t care, while pissing off those that do - case 1 the theme songs. Those that care about the game don’t have enough of a voice. The league should be separate from the sport, and have separate goals. Linked, but separate.

Agree...
But it's not happening...
Any examples of Sport Organizations that do do what you ideally want!?

Not really. I’m kind of thinking about how international sports function, with peak bodies running little in the way of professional club competition (I used a poor example about elite levels - I’m making an arbitrary divide between club competition and national representative competition). The odd international club challenge really.
Obviously it’s a different situation in football but some way to separate the league from the sport would be nice. Unrelated completely but by not labelling everything as “AFL-whatever”, it might stop people from referring to the sport as “AFL” which pisses me off.

Maybe the Geelong player is obstructing the view of the Hawthorn player in this instance and it just appears, to the umpire, that it's a floating ball.

Wonder if we'll get any clarification on the repeated weekend ruling of - Richmond player tackles opposition player, who drops or throws the ball away while being tackled, then Richmond player gets paid 'holding the man' against.
Jack graham that was , had me reeeling at the time , when we got within 9p they then 4 successive frees swinging momentum completely back their way.
That was stone cold HTB , inexcusable not to pay it then to be pinned Holding the man , well fmd , stinks of a rort

So by R2 the umps have license when and where to rule on protect zone infringement, talk about gross incompetence

If the cats dude had a Tigers jumper on not only would the umpire have paid it but the other two non controlling umpires would be frantically blowing their whistles and running like the wind to pay a 50.

Should check their pockets for sandpaper.

They’re campaigners , that’s the first emotion that comes to mind

That was among 7-8 other free kicks for the Dawks that wasnt paid. I really didnt care that much, but the 2nd half, and especially in the last, I was shaking my head in disbelief at what wasn't paid. It became comical. You often see frees missed, but not that many on one side. Much worse than our game imo.

My last comment for months on this as I don't automatically bash umpires ..... but the Hawks got reamed in that second half by the men in lime and grey in that second half. I would have been disappointed if the Cats won. Geez, their Holy Trinity got away with murder!

Field umps should work full time. Pay em 80k plus 3k per game, and more for finals. Make it a viable career option to increase competition for good umps.
You do realised they already get paid more than this whilst doing it part time...
A mate of mine is a recently retired boundary umpire, and with finals, he earnt more than 100k in his last season and that was about 3 or 4 years ago.
Field umpires make a lot more than that.... PART TIME!!!!
So don't tell me they are not rewarded enough.

Yes. I am the same. Generally acknowdge errors happen and almost never impacts on the result. But that game was one that was glaringly close to doing it.

Yes I'm aware of how much they are paid. The problem is that they work part time - and on the side they have full time jobs. You have to pay them more if you want them to work more.
