First 8 rounds for Fox's Super Saturday?
Seems arbitrary to me, but I'm sure there's a reason

It’s probably equal to the number of marquee games? So 7 would show the marquee games in addition to their regular games that round instead of replacing one as they currently do.

currently ch9 has NRL on Saturday night.

AFL is going for the money & people in Northern states will get less footy.

I have Kayo but what about the kids & trying to grow the game?

Yep. There will also be poorer people in Melbourne or Adelaide who just want to watch sport on Saturday, and if they can't watch AFL because the AFL is too greedy they will go watch the NRL.

Lol, people in Adelaide watch NRL? Nah, they will just watch SANFL.

Streaming is the way of the future. AFL still thinks we are in the past. By the time the rights end, most sports around the world will be on streaming.

The NFL has one game a week exclusively on Amazon Prime in the US and MLB signed a deal with Apple. MLS will be on Apple next year. Time for the AFL to move along with the times

AFL meanwhile sticks with 7/Fox with the same amount of FTA games and nothing else other than a “Super Saturday” for 7 years.

If Channel 7's broadcast quality standard was as high as it was even 10 years ago then I'd probably be a bit sadder about FTA getting shafted. It doesn't affect me much, in fact it's better that now I can just choose to watch exclusively Fox Footy broadcasts, but I do feel for those who aren't in as fortunate positions.

the journo hacks will probably ask the question about tassie, but the way gilligan talked, the total number of FTA games will remain the same however that won't take into account any extra games that tassie creates so they go direct to fox, so more game on fox then?

Ch 9 only show Saturday night NRL games in the final 5 rounds of the season.

Seven secures AFL rights until 2031

Seven West Media (ASX: SWM) today confirmed that it has secured the AFL media rights from 2025 to 2031.

SWM’s 7plus will be the new home of the AFL for Seven’s dedicated fans and advertisers, with a comprehensive package of digital rights secured with this renewal. The 7plus AFL hub will include live and replay matches as well as catch-up rights and highlights packages on video on demand, available live and free on any device, at any time. Seven will also continue to broadcast AFL games on Channel 7 and 7mate.

SWM Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, James Warburton, said: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with the AFL until 2031. Securing a comprehensive package of digital rights to the AFL for 7plus was our absolute focus. For the first time, fans will be able to access the best AFL games and video content, live and free, in a way that suits them.

“More importantly, this new combination of broadcast and digital means SWM will be ideally positioned to drive and capture a significant share of the growing total television market.

“Together, the AFL and Seven have made the code the #1 winter sport across the country and we look forward to working with the AFL Commission to extend the sport’s leadership.”

Seven will pay a 14% increase on the 2024 rights in 2025; with indexation over the term this represents a 3.6% compound annual growth rate in rights fees across the period.

This release has been authorised to be given to ASX by the Board of Seven West Media Limited.

Streaming was the way of the future 12 years ago.
Foxtel/Kayo has greater penetration than any other service and that clearly will remain the case for another 9 years.
Everyone is streaming or can stream. The majority have trouble holding onto subscribers and lose money.
FTA has declined in past 12 years, but still has capacity to attract eyeballs at one moment in time (which streaming cannot guarantee, and will never be able to guarantee).
