Re: The LOL thread

I think they need to xray to see if he has any ability......

Any ability or maybe even a heart?

Not sure how melbourne can be so happy after that win against a pathetic essendon side when ya had 7 goals from 50's, at least 3-4 were garbage. Less inside 50's and less scoring shots when, essendon also were missing FB, CHB, Ruckman and CHF.

Gee the media is ****ed these days.

Re: The LOL thread

Apparently they are thinking about trying to give him a spine implant over the off season to have a look at whether or not it will get him to go into a contest!

I thought they were going to inject 200mm of cement into his bone marrow.

I do believe he has been affected this year by 'anticontestfailaphobia'

Be good if he got over it. Also be good if Todd Viney was 21 again

I was at the game, and the major thing that stood out to me was the lack of a "get out of jail" forward option, ie. Gumbleton and Hurley, who are tall and when all else fails you can just kick it high to them and hope they mark it, or hope it comes to ground and the boys do the work on the ground from there. As you pointed out, if any one of Pears or Fletcher played, this would have allowed Hurley to play forward. If Hille or Gumbleton played, they would have been a better forward option than Bellchambers.

The 7 direct goals from 50's or questionable frees probably didn't really help things. However, when you give the umpire the opportunity to give those frees, ie. Jetta running over the mark for no apparent reason, or Dempsey diving on the Melb players feet after he marked it, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Essendon's conversation was also poor and as you stated, they had more chances than Melbourne, but, couldn't take them. At the end of the day though, converting your chances is all a part of footy, and due to the fact that Melbourne did convert those chances they were better on the day, and deserved to win.

Being at the game, it was great to see the way the Melbourne Football Club ran the day, had a sponsors pre-game, then had a host, who interviewed Jim Stynes in front of the members and engaged the crowd. If Melbourne keep things going the way they are admin wise, they will eventually become a powerful club. All credit to them.

Re: The LOL thread

Dempsey dived to try to spoil, that was garbage. Monfries tried to mark a ball that was kicked to him, that was crap and Watts is a girl and that was crap. Didnt see the others but those 3 were crap.

Another forward would have been handy. I really dont think we were as bad as everyone is saying considering who we had out and the dees arent too bad this year, especially at the MCG.

Todd Vineys son Jack Viney is 16 and is an absolute jet. Got the medal for best player at the U16 National champoinships last week. Only down fall was he was wearing a S.A jumper...

Re: The LOL thread

Was at the game also.

You can say 7 goals were from 50's but the last two were only 10 m advancements. Also Essendon would be happy with a margin of 19. Melbourne were 51 points up before we completely shut off in the last 10 minutes.

Essendon did not look dangerous going forward at all. Don't know why Mark Williams wasn't playing. Surely he is going to be a more dangerous forward 50 target than Sam Lonergan.

Hurley should be playing forward. Neagle should be playing for nilma darnum.

Who would you play down back with Pears injured and Fletcher suspended to allow Hurley to play forward? Unfortunately on the weekend, we had no other option going forward. Gumbleton being out, Hurley having to play back, Williams is carrying an injury and struggling in the 2s, Daniher is out injured. Not many other options than to play Neagle, who actually went ok in the second half (I want him delisted, don't think I am sticking up for him). The last 2 50s were irrelevant anyway, the game ended when Brad Green kicked the goal after the 3 quarter time siren.

The issue was the 4 in the first half, which was roughly the margin, and then the replayed shot at goal to Jack Watts after he missed. Now, I would say 2 of those were definite 50s and 2 of those 50 50 calls. I'm not saying the umpire screwed things up, I am saying that if the Essendon players were more disciplined and didn't give those away, they would have been either in front or level at 3 quarter time and closing games out hasn't been a problem. The other thing is, Essendon's kicking for goal was terrible, and they had as many if not more chances than Melbourne to win the game.

Unfortunately, discipline and kicking for goal are both extremely important elements of football, so, because Melbourne was better at Essendon in those areas, they deserved the win, however, it was far from a one sided affair.

Yeah good point. Guess he was playing there out of necessity a bit. He did spend a bit of time on Green though so maybe a medium sized player could have picked him up.

I reckon for the for the future of Essendon though he is better up forward. Unlike others I really like the look of Gumbleton and between him and Hurley they could be the best 1-2 combination up forward in the comp (other than Watts and Jurrah ;))

Agree Neagle is a dud. Kicked 3 but none of his goals showed a heap.

Again good point. Personally I didn't think the first 50 to Sylvia was there and the Watts second kick was definitely not there. Very unlucky to have 5 50's against you in the first half but a few were poor discipline and like you say poor discipline is poor football.

Unfortunately, discipline and kicking for goal are both extremely important elements of football, so, because Melbourne was better at Essendon in those areas, they deserved the win, however, it was far from a one sided affair.

Without talking abut the result there was not a heap that impressed me about Essendon. Ryder is a good ruckman and Hurley, Gumby, Pears and to a lesser extent Hooker should form a good spine for close on 10 years but the midfield really worries me.

Jobe Watson whilst serviceable is never going to be a match winner. Brett Stanton is the king of cheap kicks. Winderlich isn't consistent. Don't know if Monfries will ever be anything more than a good small forward. And I wouldn't be pinning my hopes on any of Hocking, Colyer, Zaharakis, Howlett, Reimers etc.

I do look the likes of Melksham but it is early days.

The only thing that Essendon supporters have to be excited about (if they are realistic) is the future, as in, 4 or 5 years down the track. As you say, spine is good, Melksham is good. Watson will turn into a good 3rd or 4th best midfielder, if we ever get a good midfield. Stanton needs to go. Winderlich would be ok in a good midfield, as they wouldn't be able to tag him when he starts ok, and would always have a poorer opponent. Whenever he gets a big job/big tag, he goes to water. Monfries is only a small forward, but a potentially good one at that. Worth perservering with. Davies is a good small forward, not a mid. Colyer has showed something in his early games. The rest that you mentioned aren't much good. At least half of Essendon's next premiership side are not yet on their list I would say.

Re: The LOL thread

Hocking has been very good this year for a rookie player and is getting better, not a superstar but is hard and does a good job most weeks. Winders has been good this year, remember 2 years ago he was on his back for months so has done well to come back. Stanton needs help from the others, he is clearly injured though cos does get cheap kicks but normally gets them from running blokes off there legs.

I dont think our list is that far away, we have beaten Saints, Dogs, Hawks this year and last year did a similar thing. Backline is good enough, forward line will get there. Just need a couple of A grade midfielders, Prismall looked like he would be that but has dropped off. We got room in the cap, time to go after Dangerfield or Sidebottom or someone like that.

Dyson has to go, too incosistent, would probably go ok at another club. Welsh and Mcveigh are only backman now so thats where they need to play.

Sad week in football to see two of the absolute champions of the game hang up the boots. Ben Cousins and James McDonald, you will be missed.

Are you serious? James McDonald, a champion??? James McDonald is an honest trier who gave his all, and loved his club. Surely he is a long long long way from champion. If it was a 10 tier grading system with Champion 2nd below Superstar, I would have McDonald approximately 2 - 3 rungs below that.

How many blokes in the AFL have been a 250 gamer, club captain, All Australian and won multiple best & fairests?

Off the top of my head I can of Ben Cousins, Boomer Harvey, Simon Goodwin, Brad Johnson and JAMES MCDONALD.

Certainly sits comfortably amongst the superstars of the game.

I'm on the Freo bandwagon.

Got my scarf and am going tomorrow night.

You should have saved the $15 on the scarf, $15 on transport, $20 on food and beverages and $50 on ticket and slapped $100 on them at 6-1 to beat Geelong. At least then when they lose, you would have just been able to turn off the TV and go to bed, and if they win, you would be $500 better off!
