worst come back ever:)

The first comment needs to actually be half decent for it to warrant a good comeback.

But you can't argue with it either. He was actually correct. So therefore it was a good comeback.

Has the rain caused any training issues for any clubs?

Southcab,

At this stage tuany is still the only playing life member(played 300+ games), but come preso night I expect there to be a few more...

Cheers for the kudos, should be a great weekend. A lot of effort from some people getting it sorted.

Bring on the weekend!!!

Glad to see someone talking about footy again. Hopefully the rain holds out for uni's big day. Would you think Harman and Adfa would rather play ANU or Eastlake in the finals?? should be a good bout nonetheless.

Yeah good luck to the ANU and Eastlake lads in what has come down to an "elimination" final. Perfect scenario for the ANU 50th anniversary celebrations. We will play the winner in the semi final the following week, but first have a tough assignment against the Hogs who towelled us first time we met.
As for the previous question about clubs with teams in both NEAFL/AFL Canberra as well as CDs teams - BMFC have a very good set up. I have been around for 10 years and have made great mates with players from 1st grade through to the 4s. If it was a shit set up i would not have stayed! It certainly is a credit to the club in the way they balance the professionalism of the 1s and 2s with the social (but competitive) nature of 3s and 4s. We have major functions during the year that all players attend, CDs are recognised at presentation night, and I am sure it attrubutes to the success of the club.
Perfect example was the 100 game dinner function a few weeks ago. The 5 inductees were from CDs and womens teams but we still have representation across all grades.
Anyone bold enough to make predictions for results of upcoming finals series (including ANU v Dees this weekend)?
Anything other than the recent dribble (Southcab!!!) Last thing we need is an ABH equivalent on our thread....

ANU beat Eastlakes today by about 3 goals. The students played with a lot of numbers back and were able to cut off much of the Dees forward movement. ANU seemed ecstatic to make the finals and even sang their song on the field which was good fun for their supporters. Great atmosphere down there and was interesting to see both Harman and Belconnen people checking out the game in preperation for the next couple of weeks

firstly two bobs, their is only 1 abh.
this may be a bit controversial but whilst watching the eastlake v anu 3s game today with some yass players and others, the topic of "' is their much difference between the top div 4 teams and div three as a whole. Its obvious that tuggers 4s could do better than their 3s but this is out of the ordinary. A roos player who has also played div 3 harman, which i am guessing would have to be classified as one of the yard sticks of div 3, commented that it wasnt a very physical encounter. ANU 3s had some very big players today as did eastlake, would it be fair to say that the two team clubs (div 3 & 4) would pick the most talented skilled players for div 3 and the not so talented but honest hard at it type players, which would ultimately lead to (div3) a battle of skills (div4) a battle of wills. would it shake it up and make it more interesting if their was a promotion and relegation for one team from div 2 div 3 and div 4 . could be complicated but might make things overall more interesting. just a thought
predictions div 3
wk 1 adfa to beat harman
belco to thrash uni
wk 2 belco to beat harman just
gf adfa to beat belco

and hawthorn to beat collingwood !!:thumbsu:

The only problem I see with this is if the guys who are Div 2/3/4 wanting to play up or down. For example.... from what I understand, Tuggers Div 4 has Div 2 quality players who just want to have a run around with mates??? Whilst it is silly for those calibre players to be playing that low you can't make them play up.

Whilst the idea has merit, I don't think it would work. Just my opinion of course.

Any other results from the weekend?

I had the opportunity to fill in for our 4s one week when they were very short of numbers, and it happened to be against Tuggers 4s. In my opinion there is a big difference in playing standards between 3s and 4s. I also think you nailed it in your comparison - 3s has a higher skill level, therefore (in theory) there are less contests from poor kicking/handballing etc, and as a player you may perceive 4s as more physical, but this is simply due to encountering more contested possession, or being under pressure from ill directed passes. there are still some big hits in 3s, dont worry about that!!!
Promotion/relegation has some merit, in order to prevent "dynasties" in 4s. It has been very difficult for promoted 4s teams to do well (finals) in 3s, but to the credit of Woden and Bidgee they have stuck with it and are now (afer about 5 years) very competitive units and have made the 3s comp so much better. Gungahlin have effectively done this too, whereby you could say their 3s went up to 2s and their 4s have gone up to 3s, and although they have a way to go, they seem to be like a very well governed club and will become more competitive in years to come, as well as benefitting AFL in Canberra altogether.
As for the good players playing in lower divisions, i guess the way i look at it is to compare it to back home (Ovens and Murray). If a good player doesnt have time to commit to the training, functions etc he goes bush (like Hume League etc) and you lose some good players/mates at your club. Up here, you can reduce your commitment/involvement (due to work/family/whatever) and still be around the same club. It makes it a pain in the arse for coaches in higher grades, but if they dont wanna play higher do you really make them? It also improves the standard in our grades, and that is a plus. Some people bang on about Tuggers 4s and being stacked etc, and it is unfair..... They are still beatable
Lastly, anyone from ANU give us a report of their 50yr celebrations? I was at the ANU v Eastlake game, was finals atmosphere with the crowd there and a quality game of footy on show too! Anyone able to name the ANU team of the decade if possible?

Should be some crackin footy in both divs this weekend. Where are the semis all played? Yass V Coota at a neutral ground and with neutral umpires should be a good game. Anyone got a match report from the Uni V Yass game on the weekend. Uni look like they won easy goin by the scores???
Golburn really finished their season on a high playin for pride but I reckon Coota took the foot of the pedal knowin they already made finals. Swans unlucky not to make finals but I reckon. Maybe 2012... :thumbsu:
Uni against Tugeranong should be interesting. Uni the only side to beat Hawks.
What about div 3?

Anyway not sure whether theres anything in the by laws about it but I woulda thought the teams finishing 1st and 2nd should play on the Saturday of the semis and 3rd and 4th play on the Sunday. Seems strange that the 1 and 2 are disadvantaged with only 6 days off before the prelim.

Two very big games in the 3s this week.

Belco and ANU on Saturday should be a belter. ANU play a very physical, unsociable brand of footy so there won't be any easy possessions in that one. Belco are probably more skillful so it will be interesting to see if they will be able to play the games on their terms.

ADFA and Harman will also be very good. Harman will be very keen to atone for last time and their big bodied midfielders give them a lot of drive. Parsons has had a very good year and would be keen to play well against ADFA. It will be interesting to see if Ioppi can come up for the game as he didn't play the last game against Belco. Griggs would be close to favourite for the league B&F so they definitely have their fair share of guns.

Massive weekend coming up!

I wouldnt be surprised if sporting pulse is wrong. BMFC (and other clubs) got an email from AFL Canberra on 3 august that states second semi (1 v 2) is on Saturday, and first semi (3 v 4) is on sunday - as it has been in previous years. I am thinking sporrting pulse has not been fully updated yet.
All finals at Footy Park
Prelim on a Sunday, GF on a Saturday

Was a big day. Yass seemed more interested in playing the man than the footy and got shown up for it. 1s game was a good contest.

Team of the Decade off the top of my head is

O'Reilley Van den Tol Leitch

Stephens Crawshaw W.Quinn

Chaston Tuan Smith

Abbey Lancaster Hermann

Gibson Heincke Forsyth

Connor West Reed

Quinn, A Rawlinson Butler Ballantyne

Quality side, especially when blokes like Joel O'Brien miss out.
Captain?
Coach?
BTW - have seen the AFL Canberra finals manual, can confirm my earlier post is correct (3 v 4 is on Sunday)

West Captain, Langford coach.

Joel probably pretty unlucky not to be in there.

i think its time to bring it up

its time for the organisers of afl canberra to at least change div 4 to a top 5. perhaps div 3 as well to keep it the same, there is 12 teams now in div 4 and talk of rmc joining as well. the top 5 is a great system. top team gets first week off and also double chance. 2 and 3 get double chance and 4 and 5 is elimination .
it brings a few things to the table, more finals meaning more revenue for afl canberra and rewards the top 5 sides. goulburn is prime example this year, beat coota in last game and i believe they are a better team than coota and would have had the chance to prove it again. it also helps clubs finishing 5 or 6 to push for finals, if they finish 5th and play at least one final and gives encouragement for players and supporters to go better the next year. hopefully they will have a look at how every other league in australia operates and they will see at least a top 5 if not top 6. take your blinkers off and change this asap. its not that hard
this is how top 5 finals works if you dont know

1st week
1 gets week off
2 v 3 (double chance)
4 v 5 (elimination)
2nd week
winner of 2v3 play 1 for automatic entry to grand final
loser of 2v3 plays winner of 4 v 5 . loser is out
winner of this plays loser of 1 v 2(or 3) depending who loses to top team
winner goes to grand final

it is easy and fair and it works

just adding that a top 5 is only appropriate with at least 10 teams

So potentially the top team could play two games in 4 weeks. That doesn't sound so great to me. Good for injury prevention maybe but not for consistency. I would hate that personally.

How would a top 6 work?

Yeah I wonder if thats why Southcabs been pretty quiet so far this week? :D
Could get shown up if they try it on with the Blues this week as well!

They won't beat Coota if they try it again, especially with neutral umpires. I think it's Bec that umpired the ANU vs Yass game on the weekend? She was really good, has come along really well over the last few years.

You must be from Anu hangdog !!!! I actually watched the second half of the Yass v Anu Game and couldnt beleive that Yass were down. I think they played the better footy in the second half.
What i did see was the Yass coach give the players one hell of a spray at Halftime !!!!! Twobobs you would know the Yass coach (ex Belco) do you think he will let it happen again ? He seemed to step up himself in the second half and lead the way.
