Gungahlin have forfeited to yass for tommorows game.I feel sorry for the jets who two years ago were pretty much the benchmark in districts.I hope they get the numbers soon and get back to where they once were.

Pretty sh1t feeling SC. Always a good match against your blokes.

Every team goes through patches and we are in ours apparently. The numbers are in the books, just a matter of getting everyone available all at once.

There is always the chance for a week to week permit to play.

Surely there are guys at Eastlake or Belco missing out this week who would happily get game time for anyone?

You blokes are welcome at yass anytime SS.Was there no chance of even playing the 16 a side rule ?

Its a good idea GF but it will never happen players want to play were mates are, not against them.It seems that there are a few teams that are short on numbers this year we palyed the first game against coota with 15 we had 18 last week and were at full strength this week for the first time.Belco are ringing aroung game day to secure players, coota had 18 last week and will be short this weekend due to playing sunday and they cant get the leauge players to help out. They chose to play sunday by the way so they could staff the picnic races to inject cash into there club.

Guys not getting a game want to play footy.

A senior club had 18 extra players last week, and a few helped fill out a couple of clubs.

Its good for the senior club with the additional players as guys get game time, and good for the players who get a run. The club receiving the top ups is also allowed to compete.

What you mentioned though is something I see as a major concern. Clubs are struggling to retain players, sponsors. Have the days of amateur footy come to a close with 350-450k mortgages, as guys now have to work additional hours each week to make ends meet, and now no longer have the time to play footy?

Are other clubs suffering having too few players week in week out, too few volunteers to do things properly, and surviving with no money left over at the end of each season.

To be honest SC I couldn't tell you roughly what numbers we had.

GF, I think it is great for District Footy for guys to help out other clubs. I think you raise some valid points as well. I know last year we had guys missing out or turning up late due to having to work on a Saturday or Sunday. Harman had 20 guys miss out when we played them Rd 1.

it should be done, i know if ppl miss out they would rather play no matter who it is for. perhaps the woden cooma relationship should be expanded, yass and ainslie were contemplating it for a while but typical of ainslie they wanted the best yass players to play twos for them, instead of helping out with overflow players. they could always watch yass games and try to entice the best to have a crack with them, but to take the best and send out their worst to yass didnt seem fair. i reckon their would be a bunch of rmc players hanging out for a game to fill in for any club.

i also think the lack of juniors coming through because they would rather sit on the lounge and play xbox is a concern and is killing the numbers available. could we all put our hands up and get a list of borderline players that would love a game and send them to wherever is needed. a permit player would be better than a forfeit in anyones mind.

clubs need to think of the bigger picture and keep clubs not only going but increase the numbers. a perfect example of unsportsmanlike behaviour was coota v yass rnd 1. yass only had 16 and coota bought in league players to fill their 22. they rotated all day and the last qtr yass only had 15 v 22 . coota thought they had made a huge effort to win the game and only did so in the last ten minutes. wouldnt 16 afl players v 16 afl players be fairer and make more sense. the funny thing was coota just got home and the league players between them kicked 7 goals. i might be wrong but i think i am right

Could those now two matches Gungahlin forfeited be played on a weeknight at some stage this season? I noticed there are two weekends off around the start of June that it could be done... I know one of those weekends is Queen's Birthday but maybe the other weekend for at least ANU or Yass?

Seeing as ANU has already been given a "score" for their forfeit does that mean it's too late to make it a rescheduled match?

Hangdog, i would doubt that the games could now be replayed on the weekends you mention.I know most of our players who are family men organise weekends away around the draw.

UTM, you are correct about the coota club playing leauge players ,however i dont think it was unsportsman like if we yass had the same oppertunaty we would have taken it.What we wouldnt have done was play a player from another leauge under a bogie name like the certain brother of coota,s leading goal kicker:p but horses for course i guess.

5.29 of the by-laws: "No club shall arrange or play in a match other than the official fixture schedule without the approval of the administrative committee. In saying that, if you forfeit that official match, you can't come back and have another crack when you feel like it. More of a chance to stack a side etc.

They will only try and reschedule games when, for example, the ground of both teams is unavailable (5.25 of the by-laws).

Happy to be corrected on this though.

Maybe a FaceBook page with players who don't look likely to get a game that week to nominate themselves (an a contact number) on a weekly basis that they are available for other clubs with the rider that (a la Premiership Soccer in UK) they cannot play against their home club.

Hey GF, from another league up north, we got a couple of strong clubs that dominate and others who struggle most weeks to get on the field!!
How does a week to week permit work, do most comps have this? can you play against yr own team? etc.
I know in our juniors we 'usually' even up the teams when there is a large numbers difference and to avoid a forfeit!
A couple of my mates thought it could be manipulated by 'stacking' another team to improve yr own teams chances ie if yr a certainty in yr game, send yr 'excess' better players to get a win over a rival to make finals/% etc

I'm a computer moron..I can just spell FaeceBook!:)
But I do see merit in a form of Clearing House in the ACT given that a lot of blokes would get posted here for 2 and 3 month stints especially training with the Public Service and there would be some looking for a game of footy and a way of linking up socially in a new city.
The NSW Education Dept used to operate a Casuals Pool along similar lines where a casual would indicate their availability and then a school requiring a teacher would get them via the Casual Pool.
Can't see why it wouldn't work for local Footy.
Might need something a little more formal than FaceBook to avoid rorting and pranks. Some sort of internet setup via the ACTAFL?

That idea has some merit.

On another note, Harman beat Jets in Div 3. The Jets certainly took it to the Hoggies all day and from reports from some of the Hoggies players, the win wasn't as easy as they thought it was going to be. Wind was crap as always but the game was played in great spirits.

Harman are looking good, some big bodies and some great running and support all over the ground.

A variation on the site below might work but there is also the issue of registration, insurance,....

http://teamer.net/pages/demo

I had thought about this last night. Who is going to cover insurance if anything like this went through?

If you were going to run a 'slush' bucket of players then you could have the club registration, where their allegiance lies and then a generic registration where by they are registered under ACTAFL that way they won't play against their own club.

Whilst this idea has merit, it won't ever get off the ground, for a couple of reasons.. The ACTAFL won't want to have ANY individual responsibility for a player, insurance is an issue, there are clubs who won't want to release any players regardless of them getting a run or not (this has already been proven by a club/coach from last season - but that is a different story) and what happens if one of these players is taken from the list and then come Friday night a club has a couple of unavailablilties and wants to use a player designated to another club for a game on the weekend?

After a 21 year absence the hawks jumper made its way onto clarke oval today in what was an unwelcome return. ( and also the hawks initation to club umpires )The hawks came away victories by 10 points.
Cant wait to read the coota herald to see how unlucky coota were KNOT.:D

Hi All,
New to this Big Footy but looks like a great sight for information relating to Canberra District footy.

So what are all our thoughts on the best players in the League for Div 3 and Div 4.

Starting with the DIV4 - List you best 2 players in each position.
Back line
Half Back Line
Midfield
Half Forward Line
Forward Line
Ruckmen

DIV - List you best 2 players in each position.

Half Back Line

Would be good to get a team list of the best players together to give to AFL Canberra for a match against the South Coast or North Coast sometime in the future.

Footy

Welcome to the Districts forum.

As for the best players, it changes year in year out.

The ADFA boys are all anonymous until the votes get read out on League Presso night.

As for a rep game, I'd suggest half the best players in the league are family men who take a week off mid season as a chance to re-acquaint themselves with family. Its the reason why the rep game died a few years ago...
