The umpiring is pretty good. It's generally more black and white this time around. There was the odd seeming off decision, but there wasn't anything as blatantly bad as in the previous AFL games.Quick question to Ross/guys that have played the game, do the umpires have a noticeable presence in the game? Because a lot of free kicks paid in the AFL seem to be the high tackles/hands in the back/holding off the ball ie things that wouldn't really be controllable in game. So are these style of decisions been left out or is it random when they'll be paid?
Cos I could see myself getting very frustrated at random hands in the back frees, much the same as i get incredibly angry at the holding, block in the back and clipping penalties in madden.
Almost every free kick given away would definitely be what YOU have done as well, rarely do you feel like you've tried to do the right thing and the random mechanics have just decided that this time it's in the back or too high. There's a lot of risk and reward to the controls that play into the free kicks, which I won't go into, but that stuff all plays into the fairness of a free kick.
The only thing, which has been mentioned in the XBW article, is that the umps blow their whistle quite fast in a held up situation. Whether that results in a holding the ball decision or a ball up comes down to the situation of the play. The flow isn't really broken up though as the play gets back on fast whether it's a ball up or the free kick.
Tactically the wings and flanks will do you all kinds of good to get out of a sticky situation. The middle will be relatively clogged so you might just have to go out wide. One thing I've just thought of, and I don't think it's been asked yet, are the flanks/wing positions useless like in the old games, where playing straight down the guts was the only way to play?
Again a lot of it comes down to a risk and reward type of gameplay. You can risk a long bomb down the middle where you'll come up to a 50/50 type of contest with a number of players, or go out wide to a more solid option and play it a bit safer.
A lot of the gametime we played was a good amount of wing and flank play.
