Queensland may be a NRL state but that doesn't preclude Qld being an important AFL state..

Just reading McClachlan's speech, not verbatim but re Queensland 'in a year two, football will be the biggest code in the state, something unthinkable a decade ago'.
I wonder in what respect he is referring to?
This I find interesting, considering in the AFL 2022 financial report, community clubs numbers in Queensland were relatively low.
I do know they have a massive schools competition these days, with some real power schools on the gold coast like palm beach curumbin.

Grass roots footy is absolutely flying in SE QLD with most established clubs now out growing their facilities. He would also be referencing the take up of female participation which once again is booming. Heard the other night that more females play footy on SE QLD than any other state.
Through my employment I do a lot with the Suns back of office and they are also experience a large uptake. They also understand the support is generational.
A lot of the adult population through the GC are expats with previous allegiances. Where is their children are Suns supporters.
A neighbour of mine is a Rugby League Development office and he runs programs and tells kids to bring along their footy. Half will bring an afl ball that has been given to them with Suns or Lions logo on it. Straight out states he can’t complete with the AFL and its resources. Rugby League in QLD is complacent but when you take into account male And Female participation Aussie Rules will be the bigger sport in QLD

One might logically think that this is a good display of statistics.
I find it produces more questions than answers especially w.r.t N.T. and Tasmania.
How many clubs have multiple teams ?
Actual team numbers and registered players are more important.
Well, if Queensland's growth is as good as the AFL are saying, then bring on some more Queensland clubs in the next 20+ years, and up yours to Victorians who complain that we shouldn't keep adding more teams because there's too many. Amazing irony in such words. We should add new clubs if the growth is there, from a financial perspective it'd be stupid not to. I hope the game keeps going well in QLD, I'd love for Brissy to have more rival clubs to play.
Leppitsch actually pointed out back in 2015 when he was coaching the Lions that the Sunshine Coast could be the next expansion club after Tasmania in 2030. Considering the NRL just expanded into that area as well as the population growth/amount of Victorian ex pats moving & living there, I wouldn't be surprised if a Sunny Coast team comes to fruition. Teams in Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast would be a good spread of representation throughout the fast growing SEQ market.

You wouldn’t think so ahead of Canberra or Perth but the former will be unfortunately held back by GWS connections, other competing codes and a lack of will currently to upgrade Manuka.
But I wouldn’t write off SC. Depends on when team 20 enters. They could play out of the new Gabba as it’ll be close enough, a bit like how I’d have a hypothetical Joondalup team play at Optus instead of Arena Joondalup.
I’ve lived on the Goldy for the last 7 months. I’m amazed with how many random people who live here are ‘AFL’ fans and follow it closely.
It gets quite a bit of airtime in nightly mainstream news sports reports on 7/9, with the Suns definitely on the radar in the news and in the Gold Coast Bulletin.
Some of them are X Victorians who follow the Victorian Clubs, however there’s no question the AFL are succeeding in establishing a platform of support in SEQ as far as I can observe.

The title isn't that bad....If he did, then he might well be viewed that way. It's a very big IF though, and obviously the thread was just an off season troll to bait Geelong fans....and judging by the number of pages, they bit...Hard.
Thanks for sharing. The gals are certainly playing it more in clubs etc and some private schools. As a teacher of a few decades I have certainly seen changes. Touch Footy was the game for blokes in high school anyway at lunchtime. Still is for some but getting taken over by soccer and basketball. Gals don't often play at lunch in HS... AFL as always is non-existent apart from a couple who will start with marker's up and drag nobody so often join one of the other three. In Primary school handball (four square) and soccer always dominate. The kids also play 'chasey' type games from the Internet in real life. My spidey senses as a PE teacher interested in the history and reality of all this is that 'The Murderer' Gil is creative in stats. NRL dev't offices mentioned by someone else couldn't be arsed coming to schools. NRL pathways hate schools too. So it's interesting. Before COVID-19 and most of AFLQ got sacked the AFL types couldn't do enough for schools. But if they came once only they counted every kid even non-participants. Much like this thread, The Muderer is good at making polies and blokes with hands on todgers like us salivate over stuff that ain't real. If you looked at the Code that dominates in QLD, NSW and ACT of boys anyway in HS that has the most gifted athletes it's Rugby League and AFL a very distant 4th place and perhaps below... That's the view from the school yard, Cheers team!

It’s a good venue. Family atmosphere. Been to a few Essendon / Suns games there, including that great contest in 2019. Place was rocking that night with both sets of fans well represented in the house.
