I wanted to start this thread because recent years has seen the emergence of a powerhouse when it comes to producing AFL players in Queensland. Palm Beach Currumbin High School (PBC) on the Gold Coast has had six players (Jesse Joyce, Brad Scheer, Max Spencer, Brayden Crossley, Jacob Heron and Jacob Dawson) drafted to the Suns in the last three years and are currently back-to-back state champions.

They are also expecting this trend to continue in 2018 with the likes of Caleb Graham looking likely to be drafted by the Suns. It's quite impressive and I think the thread will mostly be dedicated to PBC but I'd like to also include other school results in Queensland, particularly state cup results.

I should have mentioned the most notable graduate from PBC is definitely Dayne Beams so it's not as if the school has never produced talented AFL players in the past. Sam Gilbert and Claye Beams also attended PBC.

Do you consider you have a good knowledge of the SEQ jnr.(whether school or community) AF scene? I assume you live there.

Why do you think there are such huge regd. nos. (60,000+) of jnr. & adult females playing AF?
Do you think similar large nos. will, in future years, want to play contact RL or RU?

The NRL dominates TV ratings in Qld., & is the no.1 sport. Are you aware if there are many "traditional" (ie father played, or is a strong follower of the NRL) RL families where some or most of their kids play AF?
Ditto RU families?

Are there many kids playing both AF & soccer?

Iona College took out the South Brisbane regional qualifier this week. A few notable players have come out of Iona like Josh Smith (Collingwood), Tom Hickey (St Kilda) and Tom Bell (Brisbane).

North Lakes State College took out the Brisbane North regional qualifier yesterday and Kenmore State High School won the Brisbane South Twilight regional qualifier tonight. Also, St Andrew's Anglican College took out the Sunshine Coast regional qualifier earlier this week. Gold Coast schools will play in a few weeks.

PF2: Palm Beach Currumbin State High School (Gold Coast) vs Cairns State High School (Cairns)

Just a reminder that the AFLQ Schools Cup prelims + final will be held this Friday. High chance many Suns academy players will be taking part considering three of the the four schools are situated in our zone. Palm Beach Currumbin are gunning for back-to-back-to-back state cups for those who are interested.

Helensvale captured the 2019 senior male AFLQ Schools Cup with a kick after the siren which downed the five-time defending champions PBC. Probably some future AFL players amongst the 'Vale boys.

Seems like this competition is starting to gain more prominence these days now that private schools like St Laurence's in Brisbane and All Saints on the Gold Coast are taking it more seriously. We're also seeing lots of AFL & AFLW prospects from an array of schools compete in this competition year after year and plenty of them end up getting drafted. AFLW pick 2 Havana Harris (Varsity) and AFL pick 3 Jed Walter (PBC) are two recent examples of that.

At the senior male level there seems to be a genuine rivalry forming between St Laurence's, which is full of Brisbane Lions academy players, and Palm Beach Currumbin, which is full of Gold Coast Suns academy players. The schools have contested the last two senior male grand finals and I suspect there's a good chance that will occur again this year.

As much as I like seeing Gold Coast schools do well, I actually think St Laurie's winning this tournament at some point in the near future would do wonders for its prominence/prestige.

St Laurie's Snrs are looking very strong this year.
Their 10A and 8A teams are undefeated as well so all three are looking to make it to the final 4 for the QCUP. PBC are always at the pointy too.

Do you foresee another PBC v St Laurie's QS Cup grand final this year? All Saints might be a chance too with the amount of academy players they have these days. I believe they finished third two years ago.

Not knowing All Saints (who are always strong) I'd say PBC v SLC is a good chance across Junior, Youth and Seniors. There will obviously be another school that rises to the challenge and pushes for the final.

Will be an exciting wait and watch.
