Topping up in with the SSS’S didn’t work because we gave up significant draft assets and hurt our depth/ability to get talent
We brought them in to build around Daniher who just had his best season. Also Raz as well. Joe got injured and rest was history.

We’ve done 10+ years of this shit and it’s taken us precisely nowhere. Balancing the list with “good acquisitions”

It’s got us absolutely nowhere.

Unfortunately we have had some terrible draft selections too.

But that doesn’t mean we can just give up on it. It’s more of a reason to go harder - because if we don’t, we’ll have an huge hole at this age profile.

Almost every successful side has a core of players from high in the draft. Because it’s the only place you can get the elite quality cheap.

At free agency you pay overs in money. At trade you pay overs in draft picks.

We’ve got a reliable core in Merrett, Durham, Martin, McGrath, Langford, Caldwell, Jones, Draper and McKay who provide some experience and (in some cases) leadership. So we’re not bottoming out like North, but we’re also not winning a flag. We need to bring through elite kids. Caddy looks good.

If trading players like Redman (dime-a-dozen running defender), Parish (no different to what we have otherwise), Ridley (increasingly injured) and Stringer (right age for a contender, but not us) can accelerate that it’s great and we need to seriously look at it. This team is not good enough and these blokes aren’t taking us there.

Moving on Shiel and Parish might even have a very quick pay-off in terms of what we already have (Hobbs, Tsatas).

A decent shake-up is required.
Aside from a couple of howlers most of those players we've bought in were fine considering what we paid for them. The timing for a few was off but that was because the club ****ed up and thought we were close to a flag. The issue lies with the drafting and development, that's where the bulk of any list is sourced and if you can't get that right you're going to be pushing shit up hill for a long time.

The strategy is fine now if we are using our cap space to early pay players.

McKay, Gresham, McGrath, Redman and Parish all have long deals but if we restructured them so that we are paying them more early then that is fine. Allows us to bring in more talent closer to our real push.

Half serious suggestion, but given Brisbane have seemingly gone younger to your Wilmot, Brain, Reville, Fletcher types and we need a bit more mature ping out of half back…Conor McKenna?

We defs need more ping out of our back half. What’s ironic is having been watching our VFL team recently: Wangers, Foley, Nyko, Saad… they look more dynamic then the AFL squad!

Time for a real in depth look at our list and what we need to recruit.

1- speed
2- good ball users
3- another good defender

those three have to be top of our list.

Houston is a very good medium defender. I'd take him but maybe a few years too old. Lukosius is a bit of a Jack Watts. Looks like he will be amazing but isn't. Feel like he could be a good pick up but probably too costly re trade

Watts came good at Port where he lost the high draft pick tag and expectations. Just unfortunate he picked up an injury that ended his career.

Been some talk about trading up to get in front of a potential Kako bid, which makes sense. Just wanted to throw another suggestion out there, what if we traded back for a smattering of 2nd round picks.

We have pick 9 now, hopefully it becomes 8.

Can 8, Shiel, Stringer and potentially another player with quality (Parish, McGrath, Redman, Draper) generate some good top 35 selections?

Could pick 8 get 20, 26 and F2nd from the Suns? Then when the bid comes in we trade 20 for another 2 picks inside 35-40.

Sure pick 8 could become a star, but we aren't that lucky, maybe multiple stabs inside the top 40 is a good play, and you draft them with a vision.

Kako and 26, 29, 34, 35, 38 is better than 8, kako, late picks - Or am I tripping?

Yeah, he'll be teens/20's
As per Ed, I thought it was quite a bit further than that. But, I’m only going off media/BF stuff so grain of salt.

List is very average
Besides McKay and Ridley anyone in the backline is on the trade table if they have value
Besides Caddy and Langford anyone in the forward line same applies
Midfield I'm a bit more bullish, could see Shiel and/or Parish go for the right trade
Most importantly cut out Dodoro's influence

Adelaide would be dumb if they did

Depends how much they like him. They might see the top of the draft as being quite even, which many do. Trading for him now takes away the chance for us to talk him into staying/extending him early. And of course, they get him on their list for an extra year.

Would Daniel from dogs be a fit for us? can use the ball, dont think would cost much?

I’d be okay with it for a couple of years. He wouldn’t cost anything and his use out of the backline would allow us to move Martin back up the field.

I did hope that role would go to Roberts but Scott seems to like him further up the ground
