The AFL competition badly needs to be re-branded as 'Australian Football League.'

For some years I've been getting very upset with the constant use by the media and people, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland, continually referring to the sport of Australian Football or Aussie Rules as simply "AFL".

AFL is the professional Australian national competition in the sport of Australian rules Football....AFL IS NOT THE SPORT!

Yet the sport is slowly becoming simply "AFL" in the eyes of many. AFL branding of everything Aussie Rules is changing perceptions of the game as it tries to earn new hearts and minds across the country....

Is there any sport in the world where the name of the pro competition is simultaneously referenced as the name of the sport?

Its like calling Soccer FIFA. Do we refer to Rugby Union as Super 14? Do we call Ice Hockey NHL? Do the Americans call their form of football NFL, no they call it American Football or football.

Why does the media, most commonly in Sydney and Brisbane continue to refer to the Australian football as AFL and not Australian football or Australian rules football ?

Here is just one examples of how "AFL" is erroneously used by the media and the people of Sydney in particular:

Daily Telegraph April 29, 'No Room for Kids to Run Around'
Over the road, senior *AFL team the East Coast Eagles trained on the immaculate Purser Reserve, which was used for a Sydney Swans trial earlier this year.
The team's presence has understandably prompted jealousy from the Rhinos.
"It is demoralising that there is all **that land across the road that is reserved for the AFL," Herbet said.
Both league and soccer are exploding in the area and Australian Rules continues to grow at a rate which cannot be ignored.
"***I haven't played AFL but some kids at school have," said Jayden Moynaghan from the Rhinos Under-12s.
Down the road at Penrith, Dennis Everade, 34, is the type of man that is AFL's (correct use of term AFL) biggest hurdle for expansion.
"I have two kids here and they got an AFL (maybe correct use of term if it was an AFL funded document) form from school the other week," Everade said.
"It went straight in the bin."

*According to the article there apparently is already a second AFL team in NSW called the East Coast Eagles?
**Apparently big AFL games are played down at some oval I must have missed reading about all these years?
***And apparently some 11 year old kid knows a bunch of school mates who are currently playing in the AFL, is Jack Watts still in Primary School up in Sydney is he?
The other references to "AFL" are likely correct as they allude to the Australian Football League's plans for a second AFL team in Sydney, likely.

My main beef with the use of the term "AFL" to refer to our Australian game is that it actually takes Australia or Australian out of the game. By doing so it puts the sport on a level pegging with foreign games like rubgy league. That shits me.
In most part this is the AFL HQ's doing. They constantly market the game in NSW/QLD as simply AFL and not Australian Football, eg AFL NAB AusKick.

Why cant we re-brand the national pro Australian Football competition as Australian Football League and reserve the "AFL" brand simply as the name of the sports national governing body, like in England its the English Premier League for the top flight pro football league and simply the FA for the sports governing body
??
Or are we all happy to sit back and let the big wigs at AFL House have everyone in the counrty refering to Australian Football as simply AFL for the rest of our lives?

No one's ever going to walk around calling it the 'Australian Football League' all the time. Even if you try to market it with its full name people will just shorten it to AFL. It already happens in England with the EPL.

I don't know why it bothers people so much that Sydneysiders call it AFL anyway. As long as they're getting into the game that's all I care about.

This bothers me too. However it occurs because it is deliberately marketed in the northern states as AFL, to differentiate from other terms such as footy (rugby league). I'm not sure if much will be done to change it.

In my opinion the sport is Australian football, and the league is the AFL. However in New South Wales and Queensland, both the sport and competition are AFL.

No, it doesn't. If you're going down to the park to play a game of soccer you don't say you're going to play a bit of EPL. You say football.

If you want to play American Football you don't say you're going to play NFL, either.

The league is a commonly used 'word', but it doesn't substitute from the sport in the way that 'AFL' is a substitute for 'footy' or 'Aussie Rules' as the original poster describes.

The sport is not AFL, it is Australian Rules Football. That's the code. Which should be called 'Aussie rules', and 'footy', not 'AFL'.

I was referring to this bit:

Even if you try to re-brand the AFL as 'Australian Football League' people will still call it AFL for convenience.

Just like the 'English Premier League' is branded as such but people still shorten it to EPL.

This is a bug-bear of mine, and it's being going on for a while, I remember when I was younger and being asked by a New South Welsh women if I played AFL, I sort of scoffed (though I was very flattered cosindering I was 176cm and 70kg) and said no I just play in the local comp .It wasn't till years later that it clicked what she actually meant.

This doesn't exactly help
Play AFL

If the AFL are doing it what hope do we have

MRryan, i agree completely.

just on ten news: "a former AFL player Rob Dixon....."
it should have been "a former Australian Football player Rob Dixon..."

The AFL should aggressively market the competition as Australian Football, and make sure the media refer to it as such.
I remember a while ago that National Australia Bank sent out a memo to the media asking them to refer to the bank as NAB - one word - instead of N.A.B.

Completely agree - look at the FoxSports home page, which has 'AFL' and then 'Football'. So we are not football any more!!!

www.foxsports.com.au

We constantly get Soccer officials - including Ben Buckley saying things like "Football does not want to share stadiums with AFL".

We are being branded out of the term "football" and it is not good enough.

The AFL has let this happen by promoting "AFL" as the brand instead of football or Australian football in Qld and NSW. It must be Football or Australian football. Gold Coast Football Club has the right idea, and now Gold Coast United can't use that name.

Time to stop the rot, as it has implications for sponsorship and other more important flow-ons.

This is true though. He was a former AFL player.

Couldn't agree more. It amazes me the AFL is missing out on a major selling point - that it plays OUR game - AUSTRALIAN Football - and not merely a foreign import.

The English are proud of their codes (soccer and rugby). The Americans are very proud of their code (American Football). Yet here, too many here suffer from that old cultural cringe.

Surely the AFL can see the wisdom in promoting the sport of Australian Football (and not just the professional level AFL) as OUR very own game.

ill probably get grilled for this ...but its like the ad campaign last year which was looked down upon from people in nsw and qld 'game that made Australia' when the game isnt that popular above the Murray...

soccer and rugby are embraced by most of the popualtion in UK...american football is embraced and they are truly national codes...if afl was number 1 in nsw/qld then of course it would be australian football and branded to the world..but its not as popular in nsw/qld as it is in vic/sa/wa

Yes - but that's the point here. Never mind about the branding to the world - this thread (and my post) are about the 'AFL' branding in NSW/Qld. That it is OUR Australian game is ONE fact the AFL should be using to help promote Australian Football (and not just use the brand-name 'AFL') to those areas where our Australian game is not as popular as the UK imports.

.

thats because part of foxsports deal with the ffa to get all socceroos games was that they had to refer to soccer as football

Dont Forget Guys, Aus is a lot different to other countries.

We have 3 football codes in this country, all reasonably supported. It isnt like the USA, where the NFL is so fa rinfront of any other footy code, or most of eurpore where soccer reigns supreme

Also note, noone asks about rugby, they ask about the NRL. Its our culture
