AFL Video Game

I haven't played one in ten years but I remember them being very clunky. I don't think the sport is suited to the medium, unless a developer spends millions upon millions creating one from scratch, which ultimately wouldn't yield a positive return. It just doesn't seem destined to work.

Maybe a manager-type game, though. I'd play that.

Big budget game - impossible.

It's still a good idea though; Soccer has seen a huge popularity spike in youths because of the Fifa games. No reason why the AFL shouldn't consider investing more heavily in one, but they haven't woken up. Also I don't think they like the idea of promoting video games because it discourages kids to go out and play.

Why cant EA Sports or 2K make an AFL Game
Because money.

AFL games will always suck, unless the AFL themselves footed the bill. To get a proper EA sports title you'd need a constant investment of tens of millions annually; have you seem the campuses which mame these games? They have teams of hundreds.

The AFL markets not big enough.

There is an argument that a good AFL game could be a way to promote the sport overseas (similar to how playing FIFA has heightened the knowledge of Football clubs around the world)

However, no studio in Australia has the budget that can make a AAA game that can compete on the world market without significant backing from either a major producer, or the AFL itself.
underrated point. if the game is genuinely fun then people will play it. i've known people who play nhl games without even knowing the rules of hockey. i think it'd be a worthy investment on the afl's part. but they key is doing it well, which with our game is much easier said than done.

AFL live 1 was perfection regarding what Big Ant had at their disposal.

Having more than 2 songs during the menus would have been nice :p

But I agree that considering the budget they would have had, having to do it from scratch, it was executed very well.

An interesting story I heard from a management consultant once - When doing risk management, AFL doesn't see much threat from other sports (well maybe a little bit from soccer, cricket and basketball etc), but they do see a threat in losing the interest of significant numbers of Aussie youth (players and fans) because of the attraction of electronic entertainment. Hence they like fantasy footy games and in theory they would probably love a good AFL sim with decent market penetration in Australia.

It does make sense. It wouldn't surprise me if there were Aussies who started following and watching soccer or US sports after playing Madden, Football Manager or NBA2K

We actually had a solution for this problem, Big Ant were going to make incremental improvements to their promising AFL 1 title back in 2011. The publisher Tru Blu decided the $$$ didn't add up and things have been pretty dire since.

The AFL needs to wise up and realise charging a publisher for a license to make games that lose money is never going to work. They need to gift the license so there is a remote chance of an AFL games series being viable. They talk about growing the game and targeting the grass roots ...how about investing in a good quality console game that kids want to play as part of that strategy.

RohanConnolly wrote an article on this, and how FIFA is helping grow soccer.

You could have the best video game developers in the world and a billion dollars, and still not make a good AFL game IMO. Games like FIFA and NBA2K are great but their respective tactics, rules and gameplay are way simpler and more predictable than AFL.
A standard game of AFL footy has 'hands in the back', 'running in the protected zone', 'dragging the ball in', 'spilled in the tackle' 'play on he ducked', 'not 15 play on', 'no prior, ball up' 'deliberate' multiple times a game, and all happening at a million miles per hour and that's just off the top of my head. Impossible to incorporate these nuances into a video game, even in modern times.
AFL98 was a cool game but that was back in the days when games weren't expected to be realistic.

Oh my mate doesn't. Does not work for them anymore.

All but one of the guys instrumental to the Production role of AFL Live are still at Big Ant. There is a hopeless, hapless wannabee that claimed to be core to the game but thankfully was moved on before he could do much damage - I only hope he isn't in the games industry any more.

Credit thieves suck.

I just looked him up and he worked for HES by the looks of it, my mistake.

He is named as Executive Producer in the book that comes from the game. Name is David.

Glad I don't know the guy you spoke about though!

If it's David Robles, David is a great guy, great to work with him, sad to see him leave HES/Tru Blu.

David is a great guy if it's David Robles, great to work with him.

Yep that's him. A top bloke.

Worked for where I work but recently left to take up a National Marketing role with Netgear. Hard worker, got lots of time for him.
