Sick of this type of chat. The ups aren't great but they weren't the ones that switched off after 3QT, they weren't the ones who kicked so inaccurately all game. There are 21 players out there, they have to cop that and can't learn from this (both games) by ignoring it and blame the umps.
Their incompetence influenced the game. It’s not chat buddy it’s an observation.

Well, I like the Port AFLW coach a lot more than the AFL one. Gracious in victory.

Bad luck Hawks. Pressure clearly got to us. Been an impressive enjoyable season though. A lot to work with for next year.

Got slaughtered in the centre bounce all quarter. Game totally played in their half. Call it a choke, but I'm saying we ran out of gas.
They actually scored pretty easy all QTR I thought which is definitely a sign we were cooked. Every time they went in they looked like scoring but that was the case all night. Defensive structure needs to be a focus in the pre season. You can be all out attack but you need to be solid behind the ball for it to work effectively just like Sam got the boys humming this year behind the ball After the early rounds.

Heartbreaking for the girls
Two finals with the same outcome

Learn from that and come out attacking rather than defending. Port were relentless in the last and from where I sat, it just seemed like it was panicked football

Really feel for the girls -sad way to end a great season.

I can’t believe the last centre bounce after we hit the front and there were no mids in the frame. That situation is drop the ball at your feet and pile on it. The same thing cost us the goal with the bounce in their goal square where our ruck tapped it out rather than dropping it at her feet. Simple simple shit that got us.

And we could have influenced the game by finishing our work off as we should have .
This was a greater issue than any umpiring.

Minimum 3 easy/gimme misses until 3/4 time. You don't need to be a maths guru to know thats game over rather than leaving the door ajar .

I thought the ruck free kick was an absolute shocker, that was going on all game and you pay that with the game on the line inside 50. Inconsistent with HTB all last QTR. Several times they should have got pinged and didn't.

The port ruck was ‘womanhandling’ ours all game, then they pick out a free in a scoring position!

There was some doozies but that was the dooziest

It doesn't have to be 1 or the other.
Hawks were inaccurate. Yes. Should've been 5 goals up at half time.
Gameplan 2 weeks in a row of kicking long to a contest rather than playing the game which had worked all season (kicking wide and allowing the players to run).

But at the same time, the umpiring directly influenced the last quarter with 3 blatant incorrect calls (ball against lou, then 2 blatant balls not paid), 2 questionable ruck frees also resulted in scores.

Both are correct statements

Final word on the umps for those half fans who've only recently jumped on. That stitch up was to the level of the 2016 hawks vs dogs semi.

Now onto the game.
Didn't take our chances, bit lost structure when aine went off due to a foul hit (which wasn't penalised - shock horror!)

Lost run when Fleming copped a chicken wing (which wasn't paid - shock horror).

Was at the game and the atmosphere at Ikon Park was excellent. Would have been about 4 thousand people or so but lots of noise and excitement, especially when Kasy got us back in front.

As a dad who jumped on board when the AFLW team came in, it was so good to see a lot of families there.

We simply ran out of legs and numbers in the last quarter which caused us to not run out the game. Losing McDonagh and Fleming for large portions hurt our structure and what we wanted to do. We had spent our petrol tickets by halfway through the last and some of our players were clearly zapped by the heat that was still there even at full time.

Speaking to a couple of players after the match and they were obviously flat about the loss but can see how much growth they've made this year. The team knows they're on the right path to success and as much as this stings, they're hopeful this will drive them to improve and go better next season.

Special mention has to go to Jenna Richardson and Tamara Smith who both were absolutely influential throughout the game, thwarting many attacking raids from Port Adelaide.

A large portion of your during and post game comments in AFL and AFLW are about umpiring .
There isn't some conspiracy against us.

We kick the ball through the two large uprights last night a few more times as we should have and we win the game .

With Newmo89's coordination, I was fortunate to be one of the supporters to do the Guard of Honour last night for our AFLW Hawks vs Port game.
It’s a heartbreaking
💔
loss and a tough pill to swallow.
There are many lessons to be learned for the girls, but I’m always proud of them and the season (specifically from the big jump from last season) and can’t wait on what’s in store for them next year.

It feels wrong to boo umpires at an aflw game, but a couple of those clearly deserved it.

When I was at the men’s final v port, plenty of port fans let us know we were favoured by umpiring. It’s just part of the show

I just want the umpiring to be consistent. I also have issue in most games with one team getting a far better run of it than the other.
since covid, the consistency of umpiring has fallen away dramatically, and has started to impact far more games. It might not be a conspiracy against hawthorn, but there is a directive from up top to keep games close (which is why we are starting to consistently see the teams that are behind by a lot in the last quarter start to get very questionable free kicks)

Yep.

There will be supporters of every club who pick out incidents in every game and claim:

“tHe UmPiReS aRe CoRrUpT”

“ThE aFl wAnT Us To LoSe” (yeah right 🙄 that’s why they’re fixturing Hawthorn as box office in 2025 - they want us to lose 😉)

The reason we lost is because Port ran riot in the last term and we couldn’t stem the tide. It happens in the men’s competition as well doesn’t it?

AFLW teams aren’t fully professional and the idea that you can switch into an effective defensive set play and the girls will all just be in lock step is unrealistic.

We lost because Port made the most of their dominance rattling on 4 goals to 1 to get over the line. They played inspired footy and are the reason we lost.

Great season finished in a very similar manner to the men’s. Onwards and upwards for the women from here.
