ANNISE BRADFIELD (GWS)

The 21-year-old has called a premature end to her AFLW career, citing a chronic knee injury.

A top-10 selection for Gold Coast in the 2020 Telstra AFLW Draft, serious injuries have stymied Bradfield's short journey, including a torn ACL and a Lisfranc issue which ruled the powerful midfielder out of her first season at the Giants, 2022 (season seven). She finally made her GWS debut in week five this year after 735 days on the sidelines, and retires with eight games to her name.

"Injuries are shit. The ongoing 'one step forward, two steps back', the long-term chronic effects and the burnout slowly take a toll. As elite athletes we make so many sacrifices. It consumes us," Bradfield wrote on her Instagram account. "Important conversations with important people made me realise my tunnel vision. When the future consequences of my injuries were revealed, it showed me what is most important. I’m so young and have a whole other life to live. My body has told me it is time to medically retire, and I have listened. Thank you to GWS and Gold Coast for giving me the opportunity to live out my childhood dream, and to the teammates that have become family."

Ins: TBC
Outs: Jasmine Grierson (delisted), Annise Bradfield (retired), Caitlin Miller (delisted), Jemma Ramsdale (delisted)

The Giants have informed defender Jasmine Grierson that she will not be offered a contract for the 2025 season. A former Demon and Kangaroo, Grierson played 61 games across her career, her versatility, footy IQ and strong ball use key features of her game. "We'd like to thank Jas for her contribution over the past four seasons," Giants AFLW and footy operations manager Alison Zell said. "Jas has been a popular member of our playing group throughout her time with the Giants and we'd like to wish her all the best in her next chapter."

Small forward Caitlin Miller (six games, emergency in 10 games in 2024) and injury replacement player Jemma Ramsdale (three matches this year) have also been delisted, while Annise Bradfield has retired due to a chronic knee injury.

ST KILDA is set to boost its engine room in the upcoming AFLW Trade Period, with Hawthorn midfielder Charlotte Baskaran requesting a trade to the Saints and GWS utility Nic Barr also set to head to Moorabbin.

Barr is an inaugural AFLW player and noted leader, and can also provide plenty of bounce through the midfield. Quite versatile, she made her name as a half-back and can also play as a high half-forward. The 28-year-old badly injured her hamstring in round four and was ruled out of the remainder of this season.

The Giants have already been linked to Western Bulldogs defender Eleanor Brown, who would slot in nicely alongside her former teammate Isabel Huntington. But support right across the list is needed for the Giants. An attention-grabbing key forward who can form a neat trio with Zarlie Goldsworthy and Tarni Evans would be a strong addition. Some defensive depth also needs to be a priority, particularly if Evans is to stay in attack, and Kaitlyn Srhoj can establish herself in a half back/wing rotation. Meanwhile, around the ball, some dynamic support for Alyce Parker and Bec Beeson, ideally a bigger body, wouldn't go astray.

From the club:

Murphy joins the Bombers following a 12-month stint with the GIANTS which saw the 24-year-old play one game during the 2024 season after joining the club via a trade with Brisbane. A tall forward/ruck, Murphy made her AFLW debut in the GIANTS’ round two clash with Richmond but was unable to add further to her tally in orange and charcoal.

GIANTS Executive General Manager of AFLW and Football Operations, Alison Zell said: “I’d like to thank Courtney for her contribution to the GIANTS over the past year and wish her all the very best for the future.”

A little bit more on Kos

Greater Western Sydney is set to sign Dublin's Grace Kos, with an eye to potentially partnering her with Eilish O'Dowd in the ruck. Kos stands just short of 180cm, but the Giants rate her combination of speed and endurance.

I don't know why cam is still coach, he is clearly liked but it's not showing on the field, and if molly is taken at 2 what do you think about taking emma mcdonald 180cm tall forward, its also clear that patton and prosser shaw will be available in the 2nd or 3rd

Agree on Cam. But I would personally rather Fish or Howley at pick 3 as I see a need for their speed and footy IQ rather than a tall forward.

One of the contenders for our #3 pick next Monday:

West Australian Zippy Fish is a top-five contender in the league’s first fully national draft class alongside South Fremantle star Molly O’Hehir and likely No.1 pick Ash Centra. Fish – a Larrakia, Wongi, Noongar and Nunga woman – is known for her aerial ability, athleticism and explosive pace, which is fitting given her speedy nickname.

“Yeah, it would be a bit awkward if I was slow,” she laughed. “Luckily, I’ve always been fast so the name definitely fits. I want to be fast enough so no one can catch me and big enough so no one can tackle me,” she said.
