So Molly O'Hehir has surged up the phantom draft to 2 or 3. Our pick will push back to 6 due to Gold Coast's academy pick.

Zippy Fish appears to be in our reckoning again along with Poppy Scholz, younger sister of the Port ruck.

If the last draft is any indication we should take zero “intel” from the experts. No Cal Twomey types in the W sphere.

Having said that, the two mentioned would be just fine. Scholz a likely gun tall, which would be perfect, but has other sporting interests which may impact her playing availability.

Closest we’ll get to a Phantom Draft:

Same but different

Carlton
Draft picks: 5, 23, 45, 77, 95, 113, 131
The Blues will have their fingers crossed that a bid is not made on Sophie McKay before pick five, giving them the chance to land a star midfielder as well as the father-daughter selection. Zippy Fish appeals at pick five for the Blues, which would be a great result as they could then use pick 23 to take McKay

From what little I've seen, I'd be happy with any of Belloni, Rasheed, Centra, Painter, Howley, and Fish, so I think we're set for a very good player at 5/6.

Ideally I'd like one of Centra, Belloni, and Rasheed, but I suspect they're going to be out of our reach.

I would prefer a mobile tall type to add to mid/forward McKay at the pointy end of the draft. The alternative to that is SPEED. Thinking the Irish girls are great prospects going forward and we may bank in them adding enough to the balance.

Thinking Skepper, Fitzpatrick and Sophie McKay are going to form a potent small forward mix. Austin needs to realise her potential, and Bohanna along with the “resting” rucks teamed with veteran Vescio and some emerging goal kicking mids should provide a much improved forward line.

Thinking with Cordner and Petersen getting on, we need a defensive pillar to assume the mantle for the future. I was somewhat surprised Lawson—Tavan was let go during the off season.

Makes sense we’re looking at Scholz for that. Listed as a utility but has apparently shown the most promise recently as an intercepting defender.

Velardo was on the outer this season. I'm not quite sure why. I suspect we will honour any request from her to move. She's tight with the playing group so we shall see.

We have 3 spots left on our list with our 3rd pick being in the 50s. I'm not sure we'd want to be taking 2 picks in that range. Maybe there is a player they want to swap.
Injury didn't help her year, took her a while to get going.

“A footballing ‘unicorn’ in terms of her size and versatility, Scholz is looking to join sister Matilda at the elite level with some top-end traits that add a point of difference to her profile.”
STRENGTHS:

  • Intercept marking
  • Athleticism
  • Aerial ability
  • Versatility
  • Kicking
  • Footy IQ

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Ground balls
  • Reading the play

Our first pick coming up.

Welcome Poppy Scholz Tall utility (likely back) Sister of Port Adelaide ruck revelation.
And that would be my issue with this selection: she's a key defender in waiting. She could be flashy if she works on her agility and maybe be a rebounding threat, but that's going to take a lot of work.

We just overlooked 3 dynamic midfielders, albeit one of them wasn't super quick. Really not a fan of that pick for our list.

Happy with the rest of our draft.

I love the pick. Providing netball doesn’t become a priority and she does not have go home issues.

We need an athletic key defender. The Irish lass is a possible, but most of our tall defenders are third tall rather than keys.
