It's amazing actually i reckon. As a little tacker recalling 'The Winners' in the late 70's Drew Morphett would chair that replay show and talk in his rather youthful style. Now, over 30 years hence, and listening to ABC today, he still sounds the same. He'd have to be approaching 60 y/o by now but his voice is still as if he's not aged a day. He's also sported that afro-ish hairstyle for a similar length of time. Kudos to him anyway for his enduring performances as a commentator over the years.

The Winners and Drew :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Still shites over the carp we have to put up with now. Basic footy and footy calling.

Surely the worst commentator ever.

Only gets a gig at the abc because he will work for peanuts and can't get the sack.

The king of useless stats - not Bruce stats but useless stats. " The left footer kicks it to the right footer who handballs it with his left hand - wow what a flexible game it is these days".

Makes a packet of mistakes - and has a voice worse than kellie Underwood - if that is possible.

Over-reaction much?

Nobody has universal support, but Drew seems to have a lot more supporters than detractors.

If Drew Morphett is commentating a game on ABC Radio, I'll go out of my way to listen to it. I still rate him as one of the best, and definately one of the most underratted commentators out there. Calls the game with excitement without going over the top or adding stupid sound effects.

My Drew highlight was when he commentated the 'bombing' for The Dream with Roy and HG during the Sydney Olympics :D

I can still remember Drew introducing the first ever episode of 'The Winners' in the late seventies. I never missed it on a Sunday night and I have nothing but great memories of the show and Drew.

I occasionally have trouble working out what's going on when Morphett's commentating. He's generally pretty good apart from that, although I prefer Whateley.

Morphett knows his stuff. I remember in the 90's when the Age ran their version of today's supercoach back then, he had his team and it was in the top 50 or 100 during the season.

Would like to see how Bruce or Quarters would go in Supercoach today.

Tends to have a subtle Cats bias too:thumbsu: not sure where his alegience lies though.

Judging by this photo (commentators wearing their club's colours), he's a Richmond man:

Is the bloke in the Crows guernsey Max Stevens?

The old 7 commentators were fantastic. Drew Morphett, Ian Robertson, Peter Landy, Sandy Roberts.

Those 7TWO replays are keeping their legacy alive :thumbsu:

Morphett...Robbo...Roberts...McKenna...Landy - they weren't as 'flashy' as the callers of 2010. Now it's too much about the story/ies, narrating the game, sensationalising and being politically correct.

Back then, even in the late 90s, a game could be 'hidden' out at Waverley or Optus Oval - remembered only by true footy trivia buffs, but as Ch7Two shows, many were great games.

Agree, they were terrific commentators.

Not many people these days remember how good a commentator Ian Robertson was in his heyday. Insightful, knew what was good and what was bad, and not afraid to say so.

It is too lol...Drew is definitely a Blue and Landy was a Hawk. Bloody Don Scott causing trouble (even if the jumper still fitted). And Dennis was a Dog!

The intra state comp, 1992 was AFL national comp.

Cometti played 40 matches for West Perth. His best year in the WANFL was 1968 when he kicked over 60 goals playing for West Perth under Graham Farmer. In 1971 Cometti made the senior list at Footscray but due to injuries and media commitments was unable to make a mark and did not play a VFL senior match.
On his return to Perth he played with some success in the Sunday Football League. He initially played for Wanneroo before moving leading Maddington as captain-coach to four successive grand finals, winning premierships in 1974, 1975 and 1976. After hanging up his boots he later coached Osborne Park and Kelmscott, winning a premiership in 1979.
In 1982 Cometti was appointed coach of West Perth. After finishing third in his first year, his tenure at West Perth was otherwise uneventful, finishing sixth in both 1983 and 1984.

Like Drew for cricket too, back to his time with the ABC in Perth.
