Mustangs/Ice
The 7 - 2 score line could be looked at in different ways. 1/ The Ice only broke the Mustangs in the final period so the under dogs did well. 2/ The result was a blow out. 3/ The Mustangs had lots of shots on net but the Ice goalie was too hot. 4/ The Mustangs goalie was ordinary and let his team down. 5/ Ice were lucky. All 5 are simplistic but with the Ice missing 3 key players I would not be expecting them to drop in performance. The Mustangs will improve as their goalie gets game time. Any team that brings in import players who have not played for 12 months cannot expect their best efforts for a month or so. By then the season could be past them.
The size difference was also noticeable even with the missing trio who will add both bulk & class to the Ice. The new import D men for Ice will only improve too and they were impressive last night anyway.
I hope that the Mustangs have a good season but with the developments in every other club I don't rate their chances.
Class tells in the end.

Ice dogs lose a game they should have won against a mustangs outfit trying to crack the aussie net of kimlin. However. Lets take nothing away from the mustangs. They kept plugging awayand trying to crack kimlin. Within ten mins of the game the stangs burried three past kimlin. The resulting shootout was entertaining. Stangs improving alot. A long way from the stars and ice. But playing some gritty hockey so far this season.

All credit to the mustangs for their work ethic and never say die attitude. A real positive for them. Somewhat embarrassing is their investment in an import goalie who is yet to fire and was left out. O'Kane needs help up front and with Virjassov playing instead of the goalie maybe their balance was better. A horrible performance by Daryl Hamilton on Sunday and amazing games by both Kimlin and Phillips the two goalies. A great weekend of hockey in Melbourne.

Kimlin was outstanding this weekend. Phillips also. Then carson. A real goalie highlight weekend. Agree the reffing on sunday was atrocious. I did ask one of the mustang players why olthious wasnt playing. Apparently the coach wanted to get a game into carson and virjassov earlier in the season rather than later. By all accounts the import goalie will travel this week and play both games. He seems to know what he is doing though. I believe he got the assisstant coach to do the intermission speech. Whatever he said done the trick.

Went to Ice vs Mustangs first week. Absolutely loved it. Decided to be a mustangs fan prior and made the right choice. There was some fat mole Ice fan who was blocking our view and refused to sit down.

It was a Mustangs home game so they have control of the stadium. Did you not speak to someone to deal with the situation?
If not you are silly. There are security staff in place to deal with such situations.
Following the Mustangs is OK if you understand what is ahead of you. They have 2 wins against Canberra who have been close to the bottom club for the past 3 seasons. Let's see where things stand in another month.
It looks like being a tight season but unless something amazing happens the teams with real quality will make it through.

Went to see the Mustangs beat Canberra today 5-3, Jamie Bourke got a hat trick.

Good atmosphere, good skills on show as well.
Mustangs crowd is growing which is great. Jamie Bourke's return is a positive but he didn't put in the heavy pre season effort of the other squad members which may well be resented. He does help provide a foil for O'Kane to work with and his hands are very quick. The Mustangs posted another win against Canberra 3 from 3 so the real challenge still awaits as they take on the stronger teams. Same could be said for the Ice as they face a huge road trip where they take on the top 2 teams. Having said that even after this weekend another 18 games are ahead of both Melbourne teams so anything can happen.
Adelaide host the Bears in a series that could help define the 2013 season for both teams.
If Perth can claim all points this weekend in Melbourne they are well and truly in the mix. Given the potency of their import forwards they should score a bag full but the questionable Thunder D have given up lots of goals so....WHO KNOWS?
It comes down to the simple question of which team turns up to play in each game. That has been the story of the season so far. It's great!! No easy games.

Both hughes brothers have walked out on the ice. Some serious dramas going on in the ice organisation this week. Heard also perth have lost two imports. ( disgruntled). Canberra only have one import left . Olthiuos has found his form. Interesting season so far

The drama you talk of didn't seem to damage the Ice performance. 16 - 0 with the only player not registering a point being the goalie. They also played short handed last weekend on the road and came up with a good win against the Bears who are another dangerous outfit.
A long way to go yet. With Adelaide winning both games in NSW they are back in the hunt and very dangerous too. As Perth have 4 games yet to play against Canberra it's hard to see them dropping points in those games as they will have replacement imports shortly.
The Mustangs have been terrific and Olthuis has been solid.
On any day any team can win! Simple as that.

I wonder if it got to go with the new female president.

As for the Hughes bros walking out, Joey will be missed, Vinny not so much.
Personally I can't stand Vinny, too many holding penalties and too hot headed. I really can't understand how he became captain, doesn't really show much leadership from his play on the ice. There is a story behind why Webster lost the Ice captaincy after the first cup win, I like to hear some of the theories/reasons if anyone knows.

Thats a good point my opinion. This league this year is anything can happen. Joey will and wont be missed. Shame. He is some talent. I hear also sturrock and meyer asked to step down also. But agreed. Big win by the ice. Looking forward to see what the bears present in melbourne.

Apparently mitch humphries is leaving melbourne ice next week to head back overseas. Followed shortly after by todd graham. Ice beginning to thin out in depth. Hopefully this along with the departure of the hughes brothers doesnt hamper the 4peat chances this year. Heard some good reports about the stangs v thunder game sunday. A complete turn around from the previous nites loss to perth. Melbourne hockey is looking pretty healthy this season

Anymore happenings in the AIHL?
Great win by mustangs in Newcastle. Very hard to manage given the nature of the refereeing up there. Although if games are tight then visitors can score a late goal to take points. What doesn't happen is when a visiting team takes a lead. Then the ref evens up the game. Simply ask teams and they will tell you amazingly similar stories from the past 3 years or so.
Ice Dogs win pretty much ruins Adelaide's chances.
The game tonight at the Icehouse was the worst officiated in quite a while. Melbourne Ice has won 3 championships without any assistance from the traditional home town referee and tonight saw a display that was just horrible and had the home team killing penalties all night.
Bad calls all game with some memorable gaffs. Check to the head on Erzen....his contact was clean as a whistle to the chest. Elbowing on Graham...... no contact made as the Perth player had slipped to the ice, Graham hit the boards. Kneeing on Sturrock...... contact made cleanly with hip. Tripping on Webster............. Dive from Perth player and no contact at the time he fell. More besides those. We need to get this sorted for the AIHL to progress. The crowds are now getting unruly as they see the replays showing the mistakes made time and again.
Everyone should be given some slack for the odd error but the referee is being paid.
This was not good enough and very one sided.

The ice beaten last nite by the upcoming mustangs. Ice players bitching at each other after okane scored the third goal. Not good. Ice discipline got them in trouble all nite. Webster and ary both hit the post. Phillips exposed. Not even in the same class as olthuis. These kids have improved so much since game 1. They have a very tough road home. If these kids can get fourth place anything can happen. Because they would have taken points off all top three teams from here on in

Ice win 4-3 tonight
Lots of dog acts from both sides, 3 game ejections
Mustangs goalie was immense, saved a heap of shots the pro's would have struggled with

Atmosphere was electric, my first game I've been too, WON'T be the last

Also went last night for the first time and loved it, disappointed the Mustangs didn't get up but had a great experience, crowd was great and probably go again sunday

Well I'm an ice fan, so I loved it!

You have to admit, there was some seriously dirty play on both sides
That is complete rubbish.
Last night saw a referee call a host of penalties that were simply not warranted. His major penalty on Chris Frank (for a very clean check) changed the course of the game. The call on Wolgemuth close to the end for a game misconduct for a check from behind was very harsh too and denies the Mustangs of their best D man for their next game. The referee seems to have forgotten that checking is a part of the game and further calls against both teams for clean checks were a joke. It is not In Line hockey. On the back of Olthuis stellar form the Mustangs have become super competitive but look carefully at their use of Wolgemuth and Glanzman who both triple shifted at times.

Disagree
The misconduct penalty was there
He was holding on the chance, then proceeded to push into the board

And let's not ignore the series of bad calls to the ice, including the misconduct charge which the mustang player fell into him (2goals on that PP)

The ref has a range of options regarding levels of misconduct and therefore seriousness of outcome. He was terrible in calling the whole game and changed the outcome with his 5 min major which could easily have been a simple 2 min penalty if anything at all. Neither Frank nor Wolgemuth should be missing games because of their actions last night. In Adelaide last Sunday the whole Adelaide team left their bench during an altercation which is perhaps the most serious breach of rules in the game. The outcome......nothing at all. Nine players left the bench none were charged & because the ref failed to note it on the game sheet there is no follow up at all.
The random nature of penalties is killing the fairness in this league.

Final 4 is set. Perth make it for the 1st time. Ice Dogs and Newcastle again and Melbourne Ice look for four in a row. Going to be a hot contest.

I got into the nhl a while and only just found the australian league and will be going to the ice game this saturday. I'm thinking this will be a good game as melbourne ice could move up to 2nd if they win. but one question for anyone that has being what is the seating like at medibank ice house? does anyone have like a seating map? where would be the best places to sit?
