"Mr Richardson said it was estimated that the next stage of the redevelopment would cost about another $30, on top of the $30m that has been spent so far on the transformation."

30 mil for a grandstand that's gonna be predominantly empty/unused for it's life.. sign us up.
Not necessarily I don't think, I'm thinking it could fill up for AFLW showdowns, maybe a preseason game if there's a bit of buzz about it, Grand Final day live events if we get there (lol), and possibly even a Gather Round game if they're looking to share the opportunity to suburban grounds that aren't Norwood. I think it's something that's better to have and not need than to need and not have.

Depends on how AFLW goes over the next decade really.
If it has peaked it may be too much, if there’s natural growth it’s good foresight.

Whatever is (quite rightly) said of the club administration's decisions in regards to the senior coach's contract, this would be a significant achievement: making Alberton a 360 degree fully accessible mini-stadium.
Thank goodness the architects found a spot for the jumping castle.

I was starting to get a little concerned.

Its not really about the grandstand and the 1,000 seats.

Look at the Quinn stand, behind it's 1,000 seats is, The Precinct bar and food area including the kitchen, The Bob McLean Room where you can have a private function for 60 people for a sit down meal, the new larger retail area, the museum area, the membership counter, the pokie area and the sports bar.

The Bowling Club get some new facilities including a new social club and the club gets some new facilities. I thought there would be an indoor synthetic bowling rink but the way the article is written on the club website, looks like its an outdoor synthetic rink.

The club now has 2 venues for game day functions if we ever get decent crowds for a preseason game, at a Magpies/National reserves game or AFLW game.

The cost of getting maybe another $20 from governments, is having facilities for the Bowling Club and the community.

The renders might not be to an accurate scale but this building/grandstand looks a lot bigger than the Quinn building/grandstand

The concept plans for the next stage of the redevelopment include:
  • A third heritage inspired grandstand, increasing the seated capacity at Alberton Oval to 6,000 and overall capacity to over 10,000 to cater for AFLW, SANFL home games, and AFL pre-season games.
  • AFLW player changeroom and coaching administration facilities consolidated into the existing Allan Scott Headquarters.
  • High-performance athlete wellness and recovery facilities, which will also be available for community use
  • A STEM learning centre, and education and conferences spaces for our community programs and the Port Adelaide Academy of Sport.
  • A new Port Adelaide Bowling Club facility with synthetic green and clubrooms.
  • A flexible learning and event space for club and community access.

AFLW needs its own Caitlin Clark.
Unfortunately, it'll be a flash in the pan of interest over there and the leagues still bleeding what 50mil this year even with that uptick. There's nothing saving that league bar tens of millions of the NBA's money, hopefully the same doesn't happen here but the trajectory due to the shite planning/antagonistic promotional angle is the same.

I sure hope those outdoor greens are synthetic.

Otherwise they are going to have all sorts of problems with the shadows from those stands.

They will be synthetic as Bowls SA have recommended that clubs build/convert to synthetic greens where feasible. The way it was explained to me a few months ago, was that there would be a big indoor green as well as an outdoor green, but it looks like there is only an outdoor green.

But inside there might only be couple of rinks, if the person who told me about it was correct that there are indoor facilities for the bowling club.

For the bowls aficionados I apologise for calling it a rink in my earlier posts. Its a Green with 6 rinks.

I love that the Bowling Club is finally going to be pushed away. However it is 40 years too late. Not really sure what this development achieves. It will probably look great, but we can't fill the ground as is. The Port Club sits empty most of the time despite the very nice renovation (except for the upstairs toilets which seemed to be totally forgotten). As such I just don't understand why this much money would be spent on this. Feels like there's got to be some better initiatives and ideas than that. I can't see crowd numbers jumping for the Reserves and personally I think AFLW will settle into around a 3k average long term, at best.

REH, mate I’ve got a question about all the redevelopments that are being done. I’m just wondering if one day in the future. Would it be possible if Alberton Oval could be turned into a unique stadium like Kardinia Park is for Geelong? So eventually we can play all of the games at all levels at Alberton. So all of the profit stays within the club from gameday, and as well, we could bring artists across from the planet to play concerts at Alberton, and Alberton can be used similarly to what the Adelaide Oval is. Is that possible?

Only in our dreams unfortunately 🥺

Could it - from a construction point of view yes, but the council wouldn't approve it and it wouldn't be 40k stadium like Kardinia Park.

To get it even to 30k with decent stands you would have to buy all the houses on Colston Street and build a big southern stand. You'd have to build a decent eastern stand on the now car park and soccer pitch, but the whole reason we got federal government funding was the community aspect including the soccer pitch. Unless you knocked down some of the new facility you cant build a big eastern stand that comes up against the current new building because people would have obscured view so you might have to leave a 30-40m gap.

You would have to knock down the Williams Family Stand and build a decent western wing stand where cameras are placed in the middle of the grandstand not on HFF between Williams and Quinn stand like they are now. The council wont allow that to happen.

Then you need to find maybe $300m for the stadium + buying all those house in Colston St and probably a dozen on Seventh Avenue.

Kardinia Park was done over 5 stages and about 18 years. The last two stages cost about $215m and the Vic government covered all that. The first 3 stages cost about $110m starting construction in 2005 and the feds, state and council provided about 80% of that with Geelong contributing either $15m or $18m and the AFL around $10m.

Kardinia Park now sits in a Vic government trust, The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust and they give Geelong a nice sweetheart deal re rent and use of the facilities outside of game day.

It just doesn't make commercial sense to play AFL games at Alberton compared to Adelaide Oval.

That's why they have plans to make it a boutique ground for AFLW with broadcast quality lighting because as the AFLW season extends to 17 games and into summer, they will play more twilight and night games to avoid the heat, and they figure if a national reserves comp happens, and we can recruit better top up players, and win, and more people will come and watch the B grade.
