Article in the Fairfax papers today. Really admire his optimism. I read this quote and thought, he is a champion for being able to stay positive after what he has been through.

"At this point in time I've got my sights firmly set on the fact I will get back playing footy and I will get back and be the player I was and win another premiership one day."

Imagine the roar when he takes to the field for the first time and his first kick

Hope it happens but I just can't see it at this stage :(

Menzal played today, little things like that hopefully give him hope

I hope he makes it back at least for one game

Forgetting he is a potential gun and a swans player, just sucks to see this happen to anyone

Had a lazy 17 disposals from half a game as well :)

Gives me hope for AJ will be able to pickup where he left off.

Had my monthly viewing of 2012 gf the other night. Gee he played well. So sad to thing that was his last game really hope he makes it back.

Watched the Open Mike interview tonight, he said that while they're confident the infection is gone they can't be 100% sure until they do the reco again, but he won't give up. He's keeping himself as fit as he possibly can without an ACL (he can't run, even in a straight line) and is off the alcohol. He'll give himself every chance of making it back, nothing is ever guaranteed, but he will do everything that he possibly can to ensure a positive outcome.

We all wish him well, lets not rush him and expect miracles. I will be happy is he is pain free just in day to day life. If he can play football that is a bonus, but he is an inspiration to every player on our list regardless.

At least he isn't rupturing it which would mean structure issues, but it's really surprising that he's failed to take to the hybrid and traditional grafts, each time with an infection. It isn't something you hear a lot of.

Just crazy that we probably won't see him until 2017 at the earliest. He'll be off footy for nearly 1500 days by the time he gets back.

I found a few other things in the Open Mike interview interesting.

He's a tough one. To cope with what's happened so well is a strong reflection on quality character.

It was a common bacteria found on the skin and difficult to treat.

He will complete a degree in business next year so has been spending his time productively.

He has been paid for the three years and his contract expires at the end of this year. This probably means a Rookie contract for next year.

Looking forward to seeing him back in 2017.

Will be the most interesting decision for the club. Can see the club going with a 3 year normal contract though. I read in the paper, might have been the Daily Telegraph that they are working on a new contract for Alex.

Odds are we wont see him again

Do you re sign him?
I would! If he was able to return, we know we're getting a gun defender. I'd say it's worth taking that risk as opposed to gambling on another draftee who may or may not turn out OK.

Dont know, always seems heartless to doubt him, but we dont know we are getting a gun defender

Odds of him getting near where he was are remote

Yeah of course, it's a long road and the destination isn't guaranteed. The news seems to indicate that the knee itself isn't so bad, just the infections keep getting in the way of recovery. That gives us hope that if the knee does recovery he could well get back to his best. I'm going to stay optimistic and back him all the way!

Hope so

Because he looked on course to be a real jet

Honestly would rookie him, delist and rookie, we can rookie for 2 years right? If he comes back that is great, if not we can't have a player on the senior list who is basically out of 2016. Even 2017, one would assume at best he would need a good 2 months in the reserves.

The problem is, if we delist him with the intention of picking him up as a rookie, could another club swoop in and poach him? Would they?

I'd personally put him on a rookie-valued base contract, with matchday bonus. That way we can pay him rookie wage, because we won't be paying him matchday payments. If he does get back, he gets paid to play, which is fair enough. That way we don't risk losing him, we pay him a living wage, and we give him an incentive to get back (though from the interview, i think he's motivated enough anyway).

There usually is a gentleman's agreement that if you play on re-rookieing a player that is fine. Quite a few examples. Usually players with injuries. However you have to take him with your first rookie pick, otherwise it is open season.

I would also suggest nobody will take him without a medical anyway. If the Swans were to make a commitment to re-rookie him and I am sure he would like to repay the faith shown, I doubt he would agree to do a medical at another club in that case almost ruling out the likelihood of someone else taking him. I say we rookie him, nothing much to lose and plenty to gain.

He's got age on his side thankfully.
