Alex is one of only 2 players in AFL history that has 5 x 20 disposal games from debut :thumbsu:

Other is Toby Greene.

Greene had 19 in his 7th game, so one more to go for Witho, and it's a record.

Though I'm more excited about how he uses it, rather than how much he gets it - that said, the two together have given us a very, very handy player.

... also worth noting that Greene then managed 20+ touches in the remaining 12 games of his debut season. Pretty impressive!

Amongst current AFL players. On the all-time list someone posted, I think he has to make it to 11.

Brisbane deal with injuries of their own
Brisbane are resigned to losing Alex Witherden who left the field late in the loss to the Bulldogs with a hamstring injury.

“We don’t have an update on Witherden yet, we’ll wait for scans on Monday but even if it is a Grade 1 it’s probably a couple of weeks.’’

Lions’ young talent overtakes Suns
BRISBANE legend Simon Black believes the Lions have overtaken the Suns as the Queensland club with the best young talent and brightest future.

While McCluggage was pick No.3 in the draft and expected to become a very good player, the impact Witherden and Cox who were taken at Nos.23 and 24, have made is a bonus. “To see Witherden kicking the footy in from behinds, which is a very important role, says a lot about the faith the club has in him and the faith he has in himself,’’ he said. “He probably goes for a few that are a bit ambitious, but he pulls off some incredible kicks.

Recovery Report
Meanwhile, Alex Witherden will likely miss Saturday’s match against the Gold Coast Suns after injuring his hamstring. Witherden came off in the last few minutes of the Bulldogs game, with medical staff initially thinking he had cramped, but MRI scans confirmed he had a small tear in his hamstring.

“He’s going well but probably unlikely this week but we’ll see how we go,” Blach said.

Your club’s best first-year player nominees
A PLAYER from every club has been nominated for the AFL Players’ Association’s best first-year player award. Eighteen players were unveiled as nominees on Tuesday afternoon ahead of the AFLPA’s MVP Awards, which will be held on Tuesday September 12. The best first-year player award, which has been given out since 1998, is awarded to the best player in his first year on an AFL list by his peers.

The criteria isn’t as strict as the celebrated Rising Star award, which can be only be won by players who haven’t played 10 games before Round 1 and are under 21-years-old before January 1.

Brisbane Lions: Alex Witherden

No offence to Alex, but IMO Jarrod Berry was by far our best first year player.

How Jarrod was overlooked for a Rising Star nomination is a joke and now, whoever has thrown Alex's name up, clearly hasn't watched all Lions games and just gone with the first year that stood out in recent weeks.

INJURIES MAY HAVE COST WHICH LION THE RISING STAR AWARD?
Terry Wallace says the 2017 NAB Rising Star is the most open it has been in years, but believes injuries may have cost a Brisbane youngster from taking home the award.

Hawthorn's Ryan Burton, Carlton's Charlie Curnow and Essendon's Andrew McGrath are the leading contenders to win the award, which will be announced tomorrow. However, the former and Richmond and Western Bulldogs coach believes an impressive late season debutant for the Lions would have been right in the frame if he was able to debut earlier.

“If Alex Witherden had been playing early on, he’s a very, very good player, he’d be a big chance. He got 27 touches in his last game. As it stands, I’ve got him coming in fifth spot,” said Wallace on SEN’s Hungry for Sport.

“He had, I think, a shoulder injury that kept him out. He didn’t play a lot at 18’s level, but he’s getting more possessions now than he did at junior level. I don’t know how that happens.”

The 18-year-old Geelong Falcons product averaged 23 disposals in his debut season for the bottom-placed Lions, but didn’t make his debut until Round 14, denting his chances of winning the much coveted award.

Witherden was taken with the 23rd pick in the 2016 National Draft.

Still eligible for the 2018 Rising Star.

Young Alex was interviewed on Road to the Draft today, live from the event.

To say he sounded a little raspy is an understatement :D

Obviously had a good time this week as our season closed.

Has just moved in with Hippy who has bought a place in Brisbane :thumbsu:
I wonder where that puts Schache then.
He was living with Alex. Or has he moved in with Hippy as well.
