Pick 161
Robert Lamb

Seriously, I can find an action shot of a bloke from 100 years ago but this is the best google image search turns up for a bloke who played in the 70s.

This deep in the draft we're picking for talent, and this bloke had more talent in his left nostril than you've had hot dinners.

Anyone who kicks two goals a game is a-ok with me. Lamb only played 58 games for Richmond, for 120 goals, leading the club's goal kicking in 1976 with 38 majors.

The bloke could bag 'em. Despite only playing 58 games for the Tiges, he kicked 5 or better 9 times, with a best of 8 (and a lazy 30 disposals) against Collingspoon in 76. The same year he kicked 6 from 23 touches against South, 5 against the Saints and 4 against the Hawks. He is the only player in the club’s history to kick 8 or more goals in a game in the Senior, Reserve and Under/19 teams.

Lamb won Richmond's best first year player award in 1973, kicking 28 goals in 16 games as an 18-year-old, but was dropped after the prelim and missed the flag (but played in the reserves flag). The next year he went on some kind of hot streak - from rounds 13 to 16 he went:
- 26 disposals, 2 goals 8 behinds v Fitzroy
- 20, 6.3 v Melbourne
- 26, 5.3 v Carlton
- 13, 3.3 v St Kilda

Reminder: He was 19.

Somehow he missed the 74 flag as well and probably thought **** this for a joke.

Another natural sportsman, he played in Melbourne Cricket Club's 1975/76 premiership team He made a century at the level and took a hattrick, so **** him I mean he was a damn good cricketer as well as a goal-kicking fiend. And he played golf off fricken 1 or something.

After clocking the VFL in just 65 games, he went on to kick bags for fun for Wonthaggi, Murrumbeena, and probably your mum.

Pick 162 & 163
Im going to go a player coach here.

A tough relentless back pocket is precisely what I require

162. Tom Hafey

163. Jason Castagna

Like him or love him he's been an integral part of our 3 modern flags. Had he kicked straight in 2019 he would possibly be a Norm Smith Medalist.

1982. 18 games, 80 goals, best and fairest, leading goal kicker.

I hope you kept your missus safe.

:tearsofjoy: She and I were on the road that year, parted ways in Bundaberg.

Followed them from Qld when I could. Beena got down Div 3 in 86, we were going OK in the early 80's. Still remember the Club fondly, Kevvie Reid, Damien Mountjoy, Big Em, Wazza Walker, and coach Ken Jungwirth - fun times!

Pick 164
Geoff Strang.

1639276870792.png

Son of Doug and nephew of Gordon, Geoff Strang was Richmond royalty. He was a quality player in his own right, finishing runner-up in the Jack Dyer Medal in his first full year at the club in 1966 and being a key player in the 1967 and 1969 premiership sides.

"Strang was an important member of the Tigers’ 1967 and 1969 premiership sides in his role as an attacking half-back flanker. He had plenty of pace, great anticipation, was a good mark, and a superb exponent of the drop kick. The wide, open spaces of the MCG suited Strang’s style of play down to the ground." - richmondfc.com.au

Strang played 88 matches for Richmond between 1965 and 1971. He never fully adjusted to city life and like a lot of players before big money came into the game, left in his prime. He played in a flag for the Mike Patterson coached North Adelaide before returning to Albury.

“He was a fantastic player,” legendary Richmond coach Tom Hafey said.

“He was very under-rated I suppose, but not by his own team-mates.

“We used to look for players who could do the things Strangy did. He was a thumping kick but he had such great acceleration and he was exactly what we needed in those teams. He would kill them today.”

Strang figured among the best players for the Tigers in the 1969 preliminary final win against Collingwood and the grand final winning combination against the Blues.

“He played very well in the big games,” Hafey said.

“He used to really lift for them.”

Vic Thorp pick 20. 😂😂😂 RatDisco has scammed you lot, what a bargain. One of our top 5 players ever and not a doubt about it. Some of you blokes seriously slumbering on the job there.

Have heard it said he was the best exponent of the drop kick ever. As much as I would have liked him in front of Freddie Swift, having such a champion goal kicker in Skinny Titus and then to get Maurice Rioli, I probably would not change that. Getting the ball out of the centre and kicking goals will take you a long way to winning games. The club has been blessed with such a vast range of champion players over the years.

It might be interesting, by way of say a poll, to see what a broader spectrum of BigFooty folk think are the better players in each Draft round.

It would be interesting to see what people thought.

Thorp I think suffers in the esteem of most simply because he was unseen even by Dyer’s generation. So there were no prominent commentators alive even in my childhood to extol his virtues. Also I think there were no clear awards to benchmark at that time like Jack Dyer Medals, Norm Smith Medals, Gary Ayres Medals or Brownlow Medals. From what I have read of Thorp I think the following would be fair to say:

- he was the first superstar defender in the game

- he was seen as clearly the best full back in the competition for ten seasons or more

- he was seen as the best player in the game throughout parts of his prime. Perhaps only Hart, Martin(Dustin) Dyer are the only three other Tigers about which that could be fairly said.

- he was instrumental in the club’s first and second Premierships

- he was still a very high class player when he retired in the mid 1920’s, the VFL games record holder with 263 games and to this day almost 100 years after his retirement, only 13 players have played more games for Richmond. Of the players who didn’t play in 22 game home and away seasons, only the legendary Dyer and extremely durable Titus played in more matches than Thorp. He missed out on 13 games during the WW1 years due to curtailed seasons and only had 12 finals available to him in his 16 season career. He barely missed matches, so in modern times he would likely have been a 350 game player.

- had he been born around 5-7 years later, and so been in his prime for the entire 1920’s, the Tigers may have fared better during their 4 runners-up finishes in the in 1927-28-29 and 31. In particular Full Back was seen as a very vulnerable position in the Tigers losses to the Collingwood “Machine” teams of the late 1920’s.

I am guessing but I suspect Thorp was retained at Full Back and not used in other positions because the Tigers were so weak as he entered his prime. By the time the team came good around 1919, he had established himself as being so good at the then vital position of Full Back it wouldn’t have made sense to move him. I’d have placed him in the top 5, he is one of only 7 official Hall of Fame Immortals of the club who were inducted for playing deeds, Bartlett, Hart, Dyer, Dean, Titus, Bourke being the other 6. Hafey also was elevated to this status but for his coaching.

RATDisco got a dead set gift nabbing him at pick 20.

Pick 165
Tyrone Vickery.
Much maligned but had his moments.

Richmond (2009–2016)[edit]
Vickery was drafted by the Richmond Football Club with the eighth overall pick in the 2008 National Draft and made his AFL debut in round 12 of the 2009 AFL season.[3][4] He went on to play 23 games across his first two seasons, kicking eight goals.[5]

In 2011, Vickery was shifted to a full-time forward role. He played every game for the season and kicked 35 goals, placing second in the club's goal kicking tally. He also received the Kevin Bartlett medal for a fifth-placed finish in the club's best and fairest award.[6]

An injury received in pre-season cruelled his 2012 campaign, limiting him to only nine games.[5]

In 2013 however, he played 21 games and kicked 27 goals, again placing second in club's goal kicking.[7] In the Tigers' round 14 matchup against St Kilda, his 18 disposal, 11 mark and one goal performance won him best-afield honours and the Ian Stewart Medal.[8] Vickery also played in Richmond's first final in 12 years and booted two goals on the day.[5]

He played just 12 games in 2014 as competition came from fellow Tiger, Ben Griffiths for the second key-forward role in Richmond's game structure.[5][9] In round 18 2014, Vickery struck and concussed West Coast ruckman Dean Cox in a boundary-side ruck contest. He was suspended for four weeks by the AFL Tribunal and offered a public apology for the incident.[10]

In 2015, Vickery found himself again in favour with coach, Damien Hardwick who began frequently playing him alongside both Ben Griffiths and former Coleman Medallist, Jack Riewoldt.[9] He kicked a career high six goals in the Tigers' 91-point victory over Collingwood in round 21. Vickery finished the season with 31 goals across 15 games, second at the club behind Riewoldt.[11]

Despite a relatively strong start to season 2016, Vickery would play just six of the club's final 11 games. Over the period he struggled to impact the game outside of his goal-scoring work, averaging only eight disposals per game. His final game, a two-goal performance, came in round 21 against Geelong.[5] After 119 matches and 158 goals with Richmond, he announced he would be exploring his options as a restricted free agent.[12]

Barunga Bullet

Pick 166
Greg dear
Games- 53
Goals- 9

Greg has played all his AFL/VFL football as a ruckman. He spent eleven seasons at Hawthorn where he won the VFL Reserves Grade Best and Fairest, the “Gardiner Medal”, in 1985 and was a member of their 1986, 1988, and 1989 Premiership sides. He played in 12 Finals with Hawthorn and was voted their third best player in the 1986 preliminary final victory over Fitzroy. A loss of form, couple with injury, saw him move to Richmond and this has given his career a new lease of life. Although thinly built for his height, he is a very skilful player who palms the ball well to his smaller players. He is also very creative with his play around the ground, often bringing his teammates into the game with clever handball or tap ons. He has injected life into Richmond’s play from the centre square and as a result he has given the on ball players more use of the ball than they have been used to over previous seasons. A member of Richmond’s 1995 Finals teams he performed very well in the semi-final win over Essendon download.jpeg-3.jpg
