plenty of talk about watson and his ability to play a Flintoff-type role for Australia

it's a huge ask but it might not be a gap that watson has to bridge alone if a couple of potential young allrounders continue to develop in the next couple of years

Cameron White could feasibly have taken over from Warne (bless him) by then which would add some real batting depth - it would probably ease the pressure on Watson batting at 7 if he knew White was coming in at 8 or even 9

I think James Hopes is an exciting prospect and, while he is better suited to the one-day form, he might get a look-in when mcgrath goes - the team might need a recognised 'stopper' to go to when lee and tait are getting carted

plus the younger batsmen staking a claim all bowl a bit too e.g. hussey, clark, katich, symonds

I think Australia's policy of playing four bowlers is coming to end as warne and mcgrath enter their twilight - i don't think we will be caught out again for bolwing depth as badly as we were in England

just my thoughts...

peace

Hahahahahahaha

Man that was funny, Hopes? hahaahahaha

Moss > Hopes.

White rarely bowls....if he gets a guernsey, which could happen, it will be because of his bat

i can see australia in a couple of yrs going in with 2 specialist fast bowlers and another 4 allrounders. Maybe lee, tait, with bowling from watson, hopes and maybe a 2 pronged spinning attack with white and cullen, adding that little bit extra variety with the leg spinner and the off spinner.

I think Cullen will be the primary spinner. White will only be selected as a batsman who can bowl a bit. His batting shows a lot IMO.

I rate Hopes very highly but he's a bitza player who is ideally suited to ODIs but might be found out in the 4/5 day game. However, if his bowling improves to the extent that he can take the new ball into the wind or uphill if needed (which QLD want him to do), then your prediction might pay off. Unlike White, I think Hopes best opportunity to play test cricket is as a bowler who can bat a bit.

Don't mention Watson around here as a viable option though - you'll get smashed! I think there is a ceasefire on him at the moment so lets not break the peace!

If Watson and White are in the same team, White will be batting above Watson, although the Watson barrackers reckon he will be the future no3 or 4

White is well suited to the 5 or 6 spot down the order a bit like Steve Waugh (Obviously not comparing them on ability)

here's another one from left field...

brett lee is fast and furious and never gives up but not really bowling that well in terms of line, length and economy

it MAY prove to be true that it is easier to improve a bowler who can already bat a bit than to teach a batsmen to bowl well enough

I personally think that Flintoff is more like a Botham in that he is a bit of a freak and was born not made into an allrounder - we may never have an allrounder of his class

if Lee improved to the point where he could be selected as a bowling allrounder(rather than a front-line bowler), he could end up partnering someone like White (a batting allrounder) and match the impact of Flintoff in that way

Lee can already handle the willow (for a bowler) and it wouldn't take much work to get him to the point where he could average 25-30 instead of 10-20

Just a thought...

BTW

who is Moss? have seen his name around but did not realise he was Test quality...I assume he is an allrounder?

BTW x 2

sorry, but there is no way that Jaques will should jump the queue like Clarke and Katich did (both also from NSW...hmmmm)

Hodge, Maher, Love, Symonds and others have all been waiting for their chance - even Hussey had to wait until he was 30 to make his debut

peace

Symonds whould be in the test side as the allrounder instead of pretty boy Watson. Symonds is tough and will get the job done, Watson is weak. Symonds obviously bowls mediums and offies so adds even more variety.

Symonds>>>>>>>>>>Watson

Brett needs to learn how to bowl first...

hmmm...the jury's still out for me

at times he seems lethal but most of the time he's just woeful

that's why I figured if he was capable of adding 10 runs a game to his average with the bat, he might become an automatic choice as a bowling allrounder (i.e. 4th or 5th bowler)

but that's a big 'IF'
