Amazing coincidences in football

They mentioned that the last 12 times a team lost the QF by more than 50 they went on to win the SF. That's surprising. But have any even made a grand final, let alone won one?

There's a particularly bizarre example of this in the NRL in 2005, which at that stage was using the McIntyre Final 8 System. The Top 8 in order that year was Parramatta, St George Illawarra, Brisbane, West Tigers, North Queensland, Melbourne, Cronulla and Manly.

The Eels and Dragons beat and eliminated the Sea Eagles and Sharks in the 1 v 8 and 2 v 7 finals, while the Storm narrowly upset the Broncos in Brisbane in the 6th vs 3rd final. However, the really one sided match was 4th vs 5th, with the Tigers demolishing the Cowboys 50-6 in Sydney.

In Week 2, the Wests Tigers eliminated Brisbane in straight sets and the North Queensland Cowboys were able to upset Melbourne and knock the Storm out of the finals. But despite being rested for the Preliminary Finals, the Dragons fell narrowly to the Tigers, while Parramatta did what the Eels have done in so many finals series - choked - and were humiliated at home 29-0 by the Cowboys.

This set up a Grand Final between West Tigers and North Queensland, despite the uncompetitive 4th vs 5th qualifying final played between the pair in week 1. Again, the Tigers thrashed the Cowboys in very one-sided match, this time 30-16 making the whole thing seem surreal, and the entire finals series a bit of a waste of time.

While people were happy for the fans of the West Tigers joint venture given Balmain had not made a finals series since 1990, a GF since 1989 and no premiership since 1969; while for Western Suburbs the Magpies had not made a finals series since 1996, played in a GF since 1963 or won one since 1952, prior and subsequent events have added to the unrealistic feeling of this premiership.

For 2005 was the first time in six years since its commencement in 2000 that the West Tigers had made the finals, and they would not make the finals again for five years until 2010, followed up by another finals position in 2011, neither of which resulted in another GF position. Since then the Tigers have completely fallen away with no finals in 13 years since 2011, and have been the perennial easy-beats of the NRL in recent seasons.

2024 not 2022!

With the Brisbane Lions making the Grand Final yesterday, the amazing run of century before coincidences has come up again for the 14th year in a row, with Fitzroy playing in the 1923 Grand Final. To recap:

1910/2010 - Collingwood Premiers both seasons
1911/2011 - Collingwood Runner Up both seasons
1912/2012 - Swans Runner Up 1912, Premiers 2012
1913/2013 - St Kilda make first GF in 1913 but lose to Fitzroy. Fremantle make first GF in 2013, but Hawthorn proves too strong.
1914/2014 - Swans Runner up both seasons, to Carlton & Hawthorn respectively
1915/2015 - Carlton and Hawthorn take successive premierships in 1915 and 2015 respectively. Carlton 1915 premier, last 2015.
1916/2016 - Fitzroy finish last in 4 team VFL 1916 GF but win all their finals and the GF over minor premier Carlton. The Bulldogs finish 7th in 2016 but win all their finals including the GF over minor premier Sydney Swans.
1917/2017 - Richmond win the 1917 wooden spoon, and the 2017 premiership.
1918/2018 - Collingwood lose the 1918 GF to the Swans by 5 points, and the 2018 GF to the WC Eagles by 5 points.
1919/2019 - Richmond make their first GF in 1919 but lose to Collingwood. GWS make first GF in 2019 and are thrashed by Richmond.
1920/2020 - Richmond premiers both seasons.
1921/2021 - Bulldogs are VFA runner up in 1921, and AFL runner up in 2021 to Melbourne.
1922/2022 - Geelong and the Swans are second last and last in 1922 and Cats and Swans play the 2022 Grand Final.

So next week, either it will be 1923/2023 Fitzroy runner up, Brisbane Lions runner up or 1923 Fitzroy runner up, Brisbane Lions 2023 premiers.
1924 had no grand final with a round-robin finals series, 2024 will have no Victorian-based teams in a Grand Final at the MCG.

Non Victorian granny 06 Swans were there against The Eagles who were in b2b grannys like Brisbane. History repeats and swans lose imo. Maybe like a point ike in 2006.

Only two teams under the current finals system [last 25 seasons] have won a premiership from outside the top four- Bulldogs 2016 and Lions today. It's quite the coincidence that Josh Dunkley played in both!

Interesting one with the three feline teams:

1944: Richmond Tigers runners-up, Fitzroy Lions premiers (but the last they would win prior to the 1996 merger with the Brisbane Bears), Geelong Cats wooden spoon

1980: Richmond Tigers premiers for the last time for 37 years, Fitzroy Lions wooden spoon, Geelong Cats beaten preliminary finalists.

2004: Richmond Tigers last, Brisbane Lions after three straight premierships lose GF and commence 20-year premiership drought, Geelong Cats beaten preliminary finalists

2017: Richmond Tigers win premiership, Brisbane Lions last, Geelong Cats beaten preliminary finalists

2024: Richmond Tigers wooden spoon, Brisbane Lions premiers, Geelong Cats beaten preliminary finalists.

There's a tenuous link, but I'll go with it. 1924 - Essendon are minor premiers but put in a shockingly inept performance against a big cat opponent - in this case the Richmond Tigers - in the last final of the year. However under the controversial round robin system used that year Essendon are still premiers - but this abysmal effort and farcical end to the season leaves many Dons players, officials and supporters very unhappy, and Tiger players, officials and supporters even less happy.

2024 - Sydney Swans are minor premiers but put in a shocker against a big cat opponent the Brisbane Lions in the 2024 Grand Final. Unlike the Bombers a century earlier however the Swans are punished for their poor performance by watching the Lions lift the premiership cup.

I think someone also mentioned that 1924 was the last time the Swans (as either South Melbourne or Sydney) beat a Lions team (either Fitzroy or Brisbane) in any final. Also while 2024 saw the Lions break a premiership drought of 20 years, the 1924 season saw the Lions enter a 20 year absence from the Grand Final.
