In R24 2024 the highest score for the season was achieved by Hawthorn with 170 in the first game on the Saturday. The next highest score for the year was Geelong with 168 in the very next game.

So the Cats with 168 points weren’t the highest scoring team of the season, the month, the round, the day or even the afternoon. 😂

The fixturing of these games was altered on the Friday and Geelong was originally supposed to play first. If that had happened then the Cats would have had the record for the highest score of the season, with approximately 97% of the games completed, for about three hours. 😎

And it would've briefly given Geelong the great feat of holding the highest score of the season and conceding the second-highest score of the season

Also there was the similar phenomenon to R24 when in R10 Gold Coast scored 164 against the Cats then Brisbane two days later scored 163 against Richmond. Brisbane by scoring 163 weren’t even the highest scoring Queensland team that round.

So in 2024 from R10 until the final round the two highest scores were achieved in the same round by teams from the same state and would be subsequently downgraded to third and fourth on the same afternoon in R24 by teams from the same state. Obviously when that state is Victoria it is far less impressive.

Another coincidence is that both Gold Coast with their 164 point game to be the highest scoring team for most of the season and Hawthorn to become the highest scoring team of the season was where they played. They were both “home but away” with Gold Coast hosting their game from NT and Hawthorn hosting from Tasmania.

And another thing…

When Gold Coast scored 164 against Geelong it was the highest score ever conceded by the Cats under Chris Scott which under pre-2024 conventions would be recorded as occurring in R11. As that game appears on its afltables.com page.

Chris Scott also had his biggest coaching losing margin exactly ten seasons earlier in R11 2014 against Sydney by 110 points.

Both games were played on a Thursday night outside Victoria.

So, for the 3 decades with a year ending with 4 for the 21st century, Port Adelaide and Sydney played in home finals for the first week.

Wow that’s big but I know where you are heading with this and no I won’t discuss 1994.
 
In 1991 Hawthorn rounded off their golden era with a crushing win over the West Coast Eagles in the Grand Final but would not win another finals game for nine years until they won an Elimination Final over Geelong in 2000.

In 2015, Hawthorn again thrashed the West Coast Eagles in the Grand Final to win their last premiership of a golden era, and once more the Hawks would not win another final for nine years, tonight breaking the drought in the 2024 6th vs 7th Elimination Final against the Western Bulldogs.

Stretching it here but both the drought-breaking 2000 and 2024 Hawks had former Essendon players in the lineup (Paul Salmon/Barry Young in 2000, Massimo D'Ambrosio in 2024)

I would also note that until Friday night, no other Hawthorn team to win a final since 2000 had contained a former Essendon player

At present, both the AFL and NRL have a rare player whose surname starts with X - and remarkably it is Xerri in both cases, with both players representing teams that wear royal blue and white uniforms. AFL player Tristan Xerri plays for North Melbourne and NRL player Bronson Xerri for the Canterbury Bulldogs.

A total of 12,787 players had taken the field for at least one senior game for 21 clubs in 123 years before Tristan Xerri made his debut for the Kangaroos against Hawthorn in June 2020 and became the first AFL player with an X surname. Bronson Xerri however isn't the first NRL player with an X surname - for many years Anthony Xuereb who played at Penrith in 1991, 1993 and 1994 along with the Western Suburbs Magpies in 1992 held the record of the only ever first grade player whose surname started with an X.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any players from the VFA/VFL, Victorian Under 18s, SANFL, WAFL, TFL or the top-level ACT, NSW, QLD and NT competitions who had a surname starting with X?

I didn’t know where to put this but just going through Andrew Mcleod stats and his 1st time to get 30 possesions was 97 grand final and his second was 98 grand final.

He kicked 3 and 7 in the games leading up to the 98 was he switched from forward to half back that match?
 
In the Port vs Geelong 2024 QF Brad Close was playing his 100th game and kicked a behind to give the Cats a score of 100 points.

Geelong is doing some epic clustering around the 81-84 point margin in recent times.

Their most recent September loss, the 2021 PF vs MFC, was by 83.



Last week in the QF was an 84 point win and their previous final, the 2022 GF, was an 81 point victory.
