I think our list for the halves is

Walker, Maam, Munster, Milford, Brimson, Gamble, Dearden, Gray, Hunt.

DCE and Munster has worked well with a kicker and a runner. Im a big rap on Maam but he needs to be paired with a good kicker.

Munster and Walker i suppose.

Mam also wouldn't work as Munster is a out and out no6. Two running 6's in the halves is just asking to be beaten. I do feel long term a Walker/Mam pairing will be electric but Ezra is a year away. You can quote me, this year will be better for Ezra than last year he'd have learnt so much and people forget he is so young and still learning, he's had to learn to run the side, now knows what he has to improve on.

Yeh I noted hed need to be paired with a proper kicker which as long as Munster plays isnt going to happen.

If Munster is injured or when he moves on Walker and Maam would be the pairing id like to see but its a ways off

Yeah my apologies and the positive with picking Walker is we aren't forced into having to play Holmes as he's the only decent kicker, both Ponga/Walsh are only average to good goalkickers, you need elite ones in Origin.

Purely an early look

1. Walsh or Ponga (I don't care which one just pick one)
2. Coates
3. Cobbo
4. Hammer
5. Khan-Pereria (Titans winger in case you don't know)
6. Munster
7. Walker

That would be my backline

I'd have Reed Mahoney at 9 next season too.

Cobbo would be against Trell and body for body he'd deal with him, why he wasn't in the centres this game I'll never know! He's too slow to be a winger now! Bloke has a boyd type like Mitchell now, he's put on over 10kg to play centre.

Id like a bigger 4, watching Edwards, To'o, Best, Crichton and Lomax last night they are scary, big and can eat metres off their own line (one of them probably goes for Trell too). Walsh and Hammer just couldnt get any metres at all coming out of the back.

1. Ponga (Walsh isnt there defensively for me)
2. Hammer
3. Cobbo
4. Coates
5. Talaugi

Little torn on Mahoney. Grants been out of form but when hes on hes the best 9 in the game. Hunt has been a star for QLD for years too.

NSW has to pick Cleary and Moses moving forward, surely. As good as Luai is Cleary has to come back and Moses has surely stamped his papers for the future.

Call wasn't a penalty try, was called no try on field. They always check it and it was ugly so to speak all they were checking was whether Luai held the chaser back took 3 seconds, could be worse we could have the AFL and the goal technology lol
No they don't, he specifically asked for a penalty try for an incident 30m out. There's a reason that's been ridiculed, it doesn't get requested by a referee in that situation ever.

Yeah I think that's the problem. A lot of good running 5/8ths, very few genuine kicking options. It's Walker and then no one.

I've seen it get called in plenty of games they go back and ask, took 3 seconds who really cares.

Don't like Hammer on the wing, actually like him in the centres, just get Walker in and he'll feed him like nothing before. The defence would have been better not having the shirt grabber Nanai there missing 8+ tackles a game, I'm so over him, I know QLD fans love what he does in attack but he's like this every week for the Cowboys, everyone looks at the attack, he's terrible in defence.

I think we can move on from Talaugi too, he wasn't great this series lets be real. Khan Pereria could be that ultra X Factor we need, can score from nowhere.

I'd play Grant and Mahoney actually, Hunt is done another that has been fantastic and 20 Origins what a player but it's time.

You would think so, big series for Grant next year I would pick Mahoney as well though
You don't think Grant can play closer to 80?

I hate having a specialist player on the bench, rather than a utility. Give me Watson/Burton that can fill in in several places, rather than a Mahoney who plays one position.

Right now I'm picking Reed as the starting 9, gives an extra kicking option too. I like Grant off the bench. Rather carry an extra hooker, the utility position will be interesting if we do move Hunt on. Not sure we really need one as it's a luxury more than a need

Oh that's fine, my point still stands though. I think that was half the problem last night, not enough grunt off the bench. Having Grant/Mahoney 'and' a utility on the bench leave you too small.

I wouldn't carry a utility, that's a luxury. Mahoney technically can play halves anyway. You'd have Hammer in the side and Cobbo covers everything in the outsides including FB.

BASICALLY

Grant
Two Props
Second rower cover next bext

Completely disagree. Pick someone that can cover several. Watson/Burton can really fill in anywhere in the backline, the halves or hooker. Mahoney in the halves would be horrendous.

Agree on two props and a second rower though.

Then I'm picking Mahoney at 9 and a utility. Has Grant dominated an Origin game? He may well be like Cleary is for Penrith. On form Mahoney is the best 9 in the game and it's not even close actually.

I would pick both though and have utilities inside the side.

Cobbo covers centre, wing, FB, Hammer could cover FB

You have a second rower that can cover centres if need be.

Two genuine props though, why Papali wasn't asked to play i'll never know.

I assume youre talking about Crichton and Walsh.

Did Crichton get a concussion?

No, the talk that AFL should ignore players getting concussed that these Whingeing Brisbane and GWS supporters are crying about.

But want to be more like NRL where you can kick players in the head with no penalty. There needs to be some rules…

Not a single player last night failed HIA which was honestly surprising given the physicality of the game. Then again I would argue AFL is worse for concussions especially at amateur level where people got knocked out every game when I played.

But you’re the one saying there should be no penalty for causing concussions?

Dont they? It looks alot like a "no try, possible penalty try situation, check obstruction".

I tend to agree it was a stupid referral but if all he saw was Walsh being wiped out then it makes sense youd check it.

Im probably of the opinion that it got reviewed and the outcome was the right one so its not a big deal.

I think Talaugi just gives you more metres off your own line, QLD barely ever got far enough upfield to be putting in attacking kicks, we needed more metres per set and often that comes from your back 5. Our back 5 is SMALL. Obviously Coates being injured doesnt help. KP is little as well and if were keeping Walsh/Ponga and Hammer we have that X-Factror of score from anywhere anyway. Fundamentals wins origin, give me 10 extra metres per set over a hail mary once every 3 games.

Its why Hunt has been so critical for so long IMO. Starts at 9 but really can play in a raft of positions. Grant coming on as a spark has worked in the past but our pack got completely pantsed this series. Fifita not playing will remain a truly baffling decision and Ponga and Hunt as bench players didnt work, at all.

I dont think anyone suggested the AFL should ignore players getting concussed are they? Just that in some instances the action is more important than the outcome. If every player concussion was a suspension then players wouldnt be lifting knees in marking contests etc etc. The Bedford one was a suspension but 3 weeks is excessive, the Cameron one is just wrong IMO.
But you’re the one saying there should be no penalty for causing concussions?
Who got concussed though?

No they don't. When was the last time you heard a referee requesting a check on a potential penalty try for an incident that happened 30m from the try line? I will happily concede if you can provide an example - I've watched a disgusting amount of rugby league over the years and it's the first time I've seen it.

Agree it's not a big deal, it just makes him look like a dill. A penalty try is only ever given if the player is 100% certain to score, if not for the foul play. That clearly was never going to be the case in this instance, even if there had been foul play. What he should've asked was to check if there was a professional foul on Walsh.

Yeah absolutely, Hunt is the perfect example for the 14. I don't really like Ponga off the bench anyway but that'll only work if your forwards are dominating.

Yeh it was never gonna be a penalty try so i get it, i just didnt really think it was that big a deal.
