Can anyone inform me as to whether Andrew McKay has had any coaching, football department or management roles at other clubs prior to becoming our GM of footy operations?

The Football Manager plays a critical role within a club.
A job that oversees the coaching, recruiting, list management, procurement, strategy and high-performance departments.

From my limited research, aside from working as a Veterinarian, McKay has been involved in the AFL match review panel and the AFL laws of the game committee - two non-club roles.
It is staggering to think that someone with no football department experience has been given such an important position.

Below is a list of a handful of existing club GM's of footy operations, with a snippet of respective past roles:

Marcus Wagner (Collingwood) - Spent three years as the senior football analyst at the pies;
Neil Balme (Geelong) - Coached Melbourne, two SANFL clubs and was the GM of footy operations at the pies;
Chris Bond (Freo) - Assistant coach at the bulldogs and senior coach of Werribee in the VFL;
Peter Rhode (Port) - Senior coach at the dogs;
Chris Fagan (Hawks) - Assistant coach at the dees;
Neale Daniher (West Coast) - Senior coach at Melbourne;

This is by no means a "fire McKay" thread - I'm just intrigued as to what else McKay has been up to since hanging up the boots, given his important club role.

It is frightening to think that someone with no prior club football department experience may now be the head of our football department.

We've had threads questioning the role of the senior coach, the President, and now the GM of Football Operations.

All these questions are moving us away from focusing on the real issue at hand here. There is only one person who can control what an individual player does out on the field. It isn't the coach. It isn't the President. It isn't the head recruiter. And it sure as hell isn't the GM of Football Operations.

I understand that people are frustrated with the way we've started the season, that is fair enough and believe me we all feel it. People can find whoever they like to point the finger at for these issues, but that's half the problem. Let's recognize that the overwhelming responsibility to perform on match day and to represent the Carlton Football Club falls on the shoulders of the playing group. They are the only ones who can truly control how they perform on any given day.

For too long we've been looking for scapegoats when the major issue has been in front of our eyes. As members and supporters I think we are entitled to go to the football and watch the players representing our club give their absolute all on the field. I don't mind losing if the playing group just isn't up to it and is beaten by the better team. However one thing I won't accept is a player or group of players putting in sub-par performances stemming from a lack of effort. That's the real issue and the longer we choose to skirt around the issue, the longer it'll be before that major issue is rectified.

McKay has a role to play at the club but in the grand scheme of things his role in our losses is comparatively minuscule. His name wouldn't come up as a consideration for blame if the players decided to pull their fingers out.

No reason to have a go at Andy Mckay since he is relatively new and his recent recruits from last year's trade season look pretty good so far.

I still think Swann and Kernahan should be moved on since the club has become incredibly stale. Keep Malthouse, Rogers and Mckay.

Move on Kernahan, Barker ( everything he touches turns to ****) and Swann.

Sticks is going at the end of the year... his replacement is being announced in June apparently (the article I read seems to have disappeared off the interwebs) and I am kind of hoping that Bear goes with him.

If they want SOS back at the club, I would be looking to move McKay sideways into a player relations manager or something like that... and put SOS into McKay's role.

Swann is signed up until the end of next year I think and if we were to get rid of him, thats a massive chunk of money out the window.

As for the 'assistant' coaches... Barker and Green would be out the door now if I had my way.

And those sports science physiologists who go around saying that the players shouldnt be kicking the ball too much in practice... I would be slamming the door on their shitty heads as I am kicking their arses out of the bloody building. Our skills have gone to shit because those useless oxygen thieves have been spouting off their new age bullshit about how repetitive kicking in practice could cause injuries... well shit. It's a physical game that requires a certain skillset to be successful at it. If they arent practicing enough with those skills they fade or become atrophied and are next to useless.
