Someone get Jarad Schofield a tissue!

For christs sake, hes just played in a Premiership, and he still wants to "go home". Fancy havin ya dad call up the Roos to say hed "retire" before hed play for Nth Melbourne. What a joke! Im sick of all these sooks missing mummy and daddy's home cooking, grow up! Its football, thats what happens!

That makes it Schofield, Carr, Thompson and Stenglein in one year! Not to mention, McPharlin, Farmer, Headland, Davis and alot more.......This has gotta stop!

Interesting article:

THE Kangaroos were warned against selecting Jarrad Schofield in yesterday's pre-season draft in a threat that angered coach Dean Laidley.

Schofield's father, Neil, yesterday admitted to the Herald Sun he rang Laidley in late November, telling him Jarrad would retire if drafted by the Roos.

The conversation had its aftermath at the pre-season draft when a furious Laidley confronted Steven Icke, the football manager of Schofield's new club Fremantle.

The Roos selected discarded Hawk Lance Picioane instead.

Neil Schofield said he told Laidley his son, who played for Port Adelaide in this year's premiership, wanted to return to his home state.

"I just wanted to find out what North Melbourne's views were on the whole thing and Dean just stated to me that, 'I wouldn't be doing my board justice if I did not consider Jarrad in the draft'," Neil Schofield said.

"And I said, 'That is unfortunate, because it would only cause two things - you would waste your pick and Jarrad would have to retire early'.

"That was it. He wanted to come home and that was the whole scenario.

"He didn't want to go to Melbourne."

Laidley would not comment when asked to elaborate on his obvious anger with the Schofield telephone call.

It is understood he felt the Dockers may have been behind the threat.

Icke said Fremantle had no knowledge of any calls being made on behalf of Schofield before the draft.

Strict penalties apply to officials who prejudice the drafts.

AFL general manager of football operations Adrian Anderson said immediately after the draft he was not aware of the Roos' problems with Fremantle.

Anderson could not be contacted last night.

Neil Schofield said he was acting independently in contacting Laidley, with whom he knew socially many years ago.

"Fremantle didn't make me ring up North Melbourne. I was concerned about my son," he said. "It had nothing to do with the Fremantle Football Club, it was old mates catching up.

"You hear all these rumours about clubs being interested in players and you never know whether it is ******** or not, so I wanted to find out from a father's point of view.

"So I rang him. And I did not try to change Dean's mind in any way.

"Dean was upfront. I said, 'He doesn't want to go to Melbourne, Dean, he won't go to Melbourne'."

Neil Schofield said he did not know any Dockers officials.

"There was nothing underhanded at all. Fremantle Football Club didn't put me up to it and didn't even know, possibly, that I had even done it, unless Jarrad had mentioned it to Steven Icke, which I doubt very much," he said.

! Hey, don't be so hasty. If I was a professional on a good wage and was made redundant while I still had two or three years productive work at the top of my field in me, I'd be kind of annoyed about the prospect of being forced to join a charity outfit and made to offer my services on an honorary basis as well. Cut the bloke some slack.

Only because it is made to happen which it doesn't have to be. In any case, how would you like to be told where you have to work. What if you had kids you had to move in and out of school and/or a wife with a career and a family?

Id do it because it is what you do! There are too many sooks these days, for crying out loud, so many of melbuurne based players, or from any team, end up showing great potential and then buggering off because they miss home, thats great for the club!

The same thing countless numbers of people in other professions do when a golden opportunity arises for them in another part of the country (or the world).

Go forth and prosper.

Alternatively, you could have your cry and hope that they'll open up a similar position in Melbourne for you, so that you won't have to go to New York. 99 times out of a hundred they'll respond by sending you on a long walk down a short road though.

I suppose you could always get your Dad to phone the CEO, but I somehow can't see this approach working in the corporate world.

Not as bad as Shane Harvey threatening to top himself.

To think of all the crap the Clokes cop because of their old man.Schofield has out done anything that Damir Cloke could've come up with.

So that's why Victorians are arogant Prics is it.IT happened to me and i never whinged and said that victorians are 'arogant prics'.Unlike you,I COPED IT.

How long can you be expected to live in Adelaide for the sake of your profession?

Seems a large percentage of examples are returning to WA. Do we just breed more mummys boys?

Well, a man by the name of John Platten was from Adelaide, and stayed his whole career in the Brown and Gold, they certainly made players alot tougher those days. These days they get ya old man to get you home, Its pathetic, and it must be stopped!
Melbourne had Thompson coming along nicely, only to find he too was a sook, and had to let Adelaide enjoy his presence. What a way to repay your club!

At the risk of trying to balance the discussion on the BF boards but much is always made of the guys wanting to return home but, does anyone know what percentage of draftees actually stay away until they finish their career? I would suggest that this is the majority rather than the minority. The argument seems skewed because of the high profile nature of some of the returnees.

CyberKev and others,
the differenence in many other professions is simply choice. In some other sports with drafts there is a free agency aspect. In many of the sports there isn't even a draft. Outside of sport there is no prevention of pursuing your employment in whatever city can accomodate your requirements that you CHOOSE.

We can complain until the cows come home that humans beings display human traits or we can accept it. People expect footballers to be removed from reality and the considerations that normal people face because we have loyalty to a club as supporters but it isn't our life being directed or our careers being controlled.

MarkT, I agree to an extent, but....

I can reasonable money in my career in Perth, I can make a lot more if I move to Sydney, and I can make ******** loads working in London.

I choose to remain in Perth on less money, an elite football player can always stay at home state and play WAFL, SANFL or VFL.

hmmm okay, how exactly does that not make them a sook again? They can seek the money they wish, they never come out and say I am going home for the money, they always say I could have got more if I stayed or move to state x, club y etc, if anything continues to prove that some AFL footballers are sooks.

Total 11

Football Park 3

MCG 2
Canberra 3
Sydney 1
Docklands 1
Princes Park 1

I'd call that sort of charity and favourable ' bounce of the ball ' nothing to be proud of. Just been in the right place at the right time.
