And even more pressure goes on the AFL, Bombers and anyone else that may have been doing the wrong thing. Well done to the AOC on setting the standard :thumbsu:

TEAM: The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has introduced new rules forcing athletes and officials to truthfully answer all questions put to them by the doping authority, ASADA.

Under the new policy, approved yesterday by the AOC Executive, athletes and officials must fully co-operate with ASADA even if to do so might tend to incriminate or expose them to a penalty.

“To be clear, failure to co-operate with and assist ASADA, in every way, can result in an athlete or official being ruled out of an Olympic Team,” said AOC President John Coates.

The AOC’s Anti Doping By- Law applies to athletes and officials who are members of a Shadow Olympic Team and, if selected, an Olympic Team.

I think it's a good idea to co operate because WADA has the power to destroy not only clubs but entire competitions. AD is not in a good spot atm - federal government funding in AFL will be withdrawn if AFL(Essendon, Geelong and Gold Coast) dont co operate with ASADA.

I'd love to see the Commission announce the same.

I'd love the Commission to do something, anything to justify their existence, which at the moment seems to be nothing more than a vehicle to provide a bloated salary and bonuses to AD.

Do you actually reckon federal government will take a principled stand on this issue in an election year?

Bonuses from all the profits they're making? Fair play I say. Would you have them cap their pay? You're a commie, aren't you?

Sports Minister Kate Lundy told the AOC meeting that ASADA and the National Integrity of Sport Unit would each get an extra $1.7 billion over the next two years to assist them with current doping investigations, including allegations of illegal supplement use in the Australian Football League and National Rugby League.

Is every kid in Auskick going to get tested?

Nope, just Dees players.

Should be interesting to watch. Both parties will scavenge votes like rats atm. Considering how desperate both leaders are to sit on the throne public opinion will weigh heavily on the tail end of this saga.

The AOC just wants to secure funding when money is tight so is trying to apease the government or future government with this policy

1.7 billion seems to be a ridiculous amount to be throwing at sport right now. I understand it may seem that I'm flying the flag for the Bombers but personally I think there are dozens of other sectors that could do with this sort of funding. Let successful sport fund this and spend the money where it really matters. The homeless, aboriginal communities, youth at risk, mental health. These guys are not vote getters but need the money more than anyone.

The thing is the Fed govt has enough spin doctor ability at their disposal to turn the whole situation around, if the worst gets proven and push comes to shove and there appears to be a cover up, to a:

"Do you really think the Australian population want the entire AFL (or NRL - insert whatever applicable) comp to fall apart because of a single club, some of their players and a few AFL officials breaking the doping and other laws and cheating"

I think they might actually end up with more votes from supporters of all the other clubs.

think it was 1.7 million, the government is not going to point out an error when its going in their favour :) my auskick comment was tongue in cheek to show up the error

With the current government and opposition they will jump for whoever makes the most noise as well as whichever side the media takes. I would not trust either party to make a decision based on what is actually wrong or right.

That makes more sense, but 1.7m would be a pittance to the AFL/NRL and other bodies. I just hate the way the govt splashes our cash around when there are areas of society in neglect.

Uh huh....of course they do. Do you really think the AFL will be or could be destroyed by WADA?

Lose WADA accreditation and see what that does - not a Federal govt recognised sport - no Federal govt funding or use of facilities - overnight the AFL would become a WWE clone - it is already heading that way in some regards. If that happened sponsors would walk and you can be certain no legal gambling would be allowed so where would sponsor $ come from, and see what that does to the next TV rights deal - I am sure they would not be willing to pay even 5% of the present $ due to the tarnished brand and sponsors (ad slots) not wanting to be associated - the AFL would not survive in its present form.

AFL in reality, like all professional sports, is a marketing exercise. That is the real difference between professional sport and amateur. Its all about marketing to advantage to get max $ and use of sport as vehicle to do so. A major component of the marketing is to give the image of a fair and somewhat level playing field so that supporters, fans and sponsors will follow/contribute to all teams and games. Its not about actually having a level playing field, but trying to maintain a level of image of it whilst manipulating the variables (fixtures and many other factors) to gain max $. Totally lose that level playing image - ie drugs, non WADA accreditation, non govt funding and the comp becomes an WWE and will go fully down that path to survive.

This is the biggest issue the AFL has ever had to face from a potential death to the comp perspective.

Unfortunately byronstjames has no interest in the big picture, he just wants to see Hird and Essendon get away with drug cheating.
