5 wins and 7 losses against the teams who made finals and yes, Essendon included.
41% strike rate.

That's not what you asked. For a team that finished 7th a 5/12 win rate against top 8 sides isn't bad. They conceeded 92.5 points per game against those sides. Certainly not bad. What are you trying to say exactly?

Lets just say 9 players makes a modern midfeild,

F*cking lol. You've got to be kidding me. So you're telling me;
- Isaac Smith is on the same level as Kieran Jack, Trent Cotchin, Jack Steven, Josh Kennedy, Leigh Montagna, Jimmy Bartel, Rory Sloane, Travis Boak and Dayne Beams
- Paul Puopolo & Bradley Hill are on the same level as Brent Harvey, Lenny Hayes, Adam Goodes, Ryan O'Keefe, Tom Liberatore, Luke Shuey, Hamish Hartlett and Callan Ward

The scary thing about this is you're probably genuine. F*ck me. This is disgracefully bias.

To be honest, Geelong needs a few of the younger brigade to step up. Unless Kelly has a bounce back year, or Bartel becomes a full-time midfielder again, there needs to be a significant step up in production from Duncan/Christensen/Caddy/Varcoe (second tier) and Horlin-Smith/Murdoch/Schroder/Stringer/Cowan/Sheringham to assist Selwood, Stokes and Johnson. Not saying every one of those players has to improve, but we probably need to find another AA-calibre midfielder from the second group (two would be nice) and 2-3 regular senior players from the third group.

Same applies to Hawthorn. Our top tier is getting long in the tooth and while our second tier of Omith, Hill & Shiel were serviceable to good at stages we're going to need a bit of improvement to compensate for our older blokes getting well older. As with Geelong of course if one of the younger untried brigade steps right in that'll help a heap.

I doubt you are going to see a "significant step up" from Duncan as he is already a very good productive player and while he will keep improving, it's more likely to be incremental rather than large leaps.

Christensen needs to work harder, Caddy is slowly improving and Varcoe needs a decent run injury wise. The best of Kelly and Bartell is well behind them and you are right you need their replacements to start stepping up but you have plenty of options to do this and they don't really need to do it in one big jump.

I think you are in a pretty decent position.
