Can't say I'm a fan.

EXCLUSIVE: Naming rights to the new $1 billion football stadium to be built at Burswood will be sold to Chinese miner Shandong Gold, with an official announcement expected later this week.

Speculation is mounting that Premier Colin Barnett, who previously ruled out selling the naming rights to the stadium, has had a change of heart after being persuaded that the deal would dramatically improve the bottom line of the project.

Industry insiders believe the naming rights to the stadium could be worth as much as $1.4 million per year.

We better get used to it. China is the new world power. I for one welcome our new overlords.

Colin Barnett is a pole smoker, does more backflips than a gymnast.

What a joke if WA's centerpiece is named after a Chinese mining company.

He certainly is.
At least it is a funny joke. Maybe we could add 888 to Shandong Gold to bring us plenty of Chinese luck.
Shandong Gold 888 Stadium. Whats not to like.o_O

Call it Perth Stadium and **** off naming rights. That's a disgraceful name.

Fivey, what's your thoughts on it? ;)

I thought it was inevitable that the naming rights would be sold, despite Barnett saying otherwise.

I'm not a fan of the name but if you decide to sell to the highest bidder I don't think you can discriminate against a company because it sounds foreign. Etihad Stadium would be the prime example of that.

My one regret is that Coxy and Brad Dick will be long gone from any form of football by the time the Dong is up

Coxy will likely be our games record holder at that stage, so a Cox Stand at the Dong might be a possibility. Has a nice ring to it.

Geez... This is Crazy Johns Stadium all over again. The Vics grudgingly ended up accepting Etihad so maybe we can to. Shame a big WA company can't buy the rights, surely Twiggy has a few millions to offload? I'd be happy with Fortescue Stadium

Assuming this goes ahead, have they
paid too much for these naming
rights? It seems like a lot of money to
invest at this early stage, without
looking at it in great detail.

Future naming rights could be worth lots
of money I suppose. It what the deal is
over in terms of years, especially if it's a
long deal.

How is it different to the deals with Etihad or Skoda?

I have no problem whatsoever with selling naming rights to the stadium regardless of whether it's an Australian or international organisation.

It is a horrible name for something that is going to be a big selling point for WA.
