OK it's well after midday in WA so I can reveal that this was of course an unelaborate (what's the opposite of elaborate? Anyway I came up with it in about five minutes and just decided to run with it) April Fools Day joke.

Many posters saw through it pretty quickly and called it out, and promptly had their posts deleted for fear of spoiling it for others. Yes, you were right, look at the date, it's a joke, well done.

For the record Shandong Gold is a real mining company operating in WA, and I do expect that the naming rights for the Dong will be sold sometime between now and 2023 when it opens five years behind schedule but Barnett's current position is that they won't be.
Behind schedule? They're currently ahead of schedule...

They're starting the ground work early so they'll only finish two years late rather than three.

I just automatically assume all major government infrastructure projects will end up years behind schedule.
My view is the only difference between the Liberal party and Labor party when it comes to project delivery is that the Libs are generally better at setting up the technical specifications of a project and then being conservative in how long earthworks and construction will take.

If Labor was building this stadium they would have said it will be done by 2016, so when it is built in 2017, they end up late. The Liberals will say 2018, think they can build it in 2017, but it will end up being 2018.

Yeah, I thought similar - that stadium would easily be designed and constructed in 24-30 months, so 2018 is very conservative.

Since my original post yesterday was deleted... can I now reiterate how much I hate April Fools Day?

I would have thought you would have been quite chuffed having a day named in your honour

How is it different to the deals with Etihad or Skoda?

I have no problem whatsoever with selling naming rights to the stadium regardless of whether it's an Australian or international organisation.

very valid point. people got used to Etihad and Skoda stadium. Shandang kind of has a ring to it. If it means WCE is bled less, i am all for it.

I'd be very suprised if the stadium wasn't simply - Perth Stadium or the Perth Bowl etc

It is a pity that Colin Barnett is involved - because I do actually like the "Colosseum" (assuming it is an all enclosed stadium)

For whatever reason - we do like shortening things - so something like "the dong" would resonate well.

I hear Rick and Johnny are a little concerned.

They've been hearing rumours the new stadium will have it's own mascots.

You only need to dress as Ballantyne to look like a male appendage, no costume needed.. ;)

Yeah but size matters. Ballantine wouldn't cut it

Uncomplicated, unsophisticated or simple were the sorts of words I think you were grasping for.

I can't believe I missed this thread before. Pure gold.
