I don't know what qualifications any of the coaches in the AFL currently hold, but don't a fair percentage of them go straight from playing into development roles in either AFL, AFLW or some might do a bit of coaching from a state league level first? It generally all happens pretty quick for an ex player once they decide that coaching is the path they want to go down.

If they want to get into coaching would you rather that did a stint of grassroots at Bell Park before coming into the AFL system?

Pretty sure most clubs aren't any different to ours, didn't Brad Ebert go straight from playing to a development role at Carlton?
I think Brad had some tertiary qualifications (Sports Science?) that had got in last years with Port. All of our coaches are the result of getting developments jobs once their playing days were over. Training on the job!

On the few occasions I went to watch the magpies I was very unimpressed with Hartlett.

Very much in the Hinkley mould of
Guy that stands near the interchange with very little discussion without the headset on or with players as they come off

Like one game the people I was with and myself genuinely laughing at him as he seemed last to know messages that Westhoff was sending out
Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. It's like we try & find the most incompetent coaches.

In what world do we have Cam Sutcliffe, Matthew Lobbe, Hamish Hartlett, Justin Westhoff, Paul Stewart, Jordan Hinkley employed by the football department? I'm sure I've missed some quality born from the Hinkley School of Unsuccess.

This football department team just sucks. It’s as simple as that. Too many ex-Port players and not enough people outside the club to offer a point of difference. All have ties to Hinkley. It’s no wonder why we will never win a flag under his tenure.

13th season in 2025 and nothing has been achieved. The list has gone through many changes and still cannot win one.

Want to get into elite AFL coaching but don’t have any experience?

Get a job on the PAFC janitorial staff, I guarantee with the rate that they internally promote you’ll be part of the coaching set-up in five years.

Best part is once you get there, results don’t matter.

Besides Dew have we even targeted other assistants or are we happy with the bare bones approach and it's all about saving $, because at least when we fail on the field they can try and deflect that by saying we are doing well off field by generating profits.

Honestly, this assistant coaching department cull by stealth is actually getting beyond a joke now.

It's also weird in that we have finished top 4 in 4/5 years so we are around the mark so now is the time to be investing in the football department i would've thought.

If you’re doing well off the field and not reinvesting it back into the footy department, what is even the point?

This is a footy club, not a Fortune 500 company.

New Leopold coach Luke Kelly on what he has learned from 13 years in AFL and his rise to the bigtime

....

Over the past three years he has gained valuable tips from Port Adelaide and ex-Bell Park premiership coach Ken Hinkley’s offensive game plan, coupled with the tough love and soft side he shows his players.

Kelly has also worked under AFL coach in waiting Josh Carr with Port Adelaide’s star studded midfield headlined by Zak Butters, Connor Rozee and Jason Horne-Francis.

“To watch Josh Carr bring that midfield group together, I was able to learn a lot from that,” Kelly said.

“So obviously stepping into a team with a really talented midfield, being able to make sure that everyone acknowledges and appreciates everyone else’s strengths. Not everyone’s perfect in all areas, so how can you help them in that area, and then they’ll help you.

Kelly hopes to bring a mix of all of those senior coaches at Leopold.

I do have sympathy for the coach killing efforts of the sub-reserves level skills shown by players in many games, dropped marks, missed handballs, wayward kicks. But Hartlett never inspired either.

We were tanking for draft picks ;)

Being Honkleys last year, of course we’re not looking for an interstate assistant. That’ll be Carr’s job.
