This game has been getting a few mentions in the general thread and I imagine a few are going to pick it up so probably worth having its own thread.

Who is keen? It looks like a really good average game (if that makes sense). I avoid reviews but have checked out a few impression like Gameranx and it looks decent with some rough edges. I've started preload so look forward to jumping in day one.

Had a little go at it last night, I'm liking it so far. The British Fallout comparisons seem on point, but there is very much a mystery element that distinguishes it and is relying on to keep you on the hook. Combat is not very finessed, but the way enemies & NPCs react towards you (if they see you skulking, if you have a weapon raised, that sort of stuff) is well done. I've read the main campaign is 25 hours without doing all the side quests, so there's plenty to do.

I didn't think it was out until tomorrow? Or is there early access with an actual purchase?

I'm one of those suckers who needs to have the top edition of everything...i purchased the digital deluxe edition (even though it's on GP, but it's the sort of game I can see myself revisiting even if I were to cancel GP, so wanted to own it). 3 day early access included.

Playing on XBox btw, not Windows.

Had another small play last night, it really is an interesting setting and story so far. I haven't encountered any bugs yet, so the Day 1 patch shouldn't be too big.

Only criticism so far is the graphics. While the scenery looks great from a distance, this is not so apparent up close. Character models are of PS4/XBone standard.

Played an hour. Ran around the first area a bit, did L6 and just got the Interchange. Pretty cool. While there are obvious comparisons to Fallout I think that would be a little unfair as it's sort of its own thing. The investigations to reveal quest steps is neat. Early on but I kind of don't get hostility. Outlaws have pretty much tried attacking me on sight but at the Interchange it says trespassing and enemies will be more hostile? I did only just learn I could holster my weapon so maybe they didn't like me running around with a cricket bat but I swear they still attacked me when I had a torch out.

Stealth mechanics are also a little odd; you can hide in pretty much any area of long grass, no matter how big the actual patch is. The Day 1 wasn't very big, and the game already seemed reasonably polished during my play during early access. I only noticed one Outlaw having issues when they were after me and I hid in grass and they sort of glitched backwards with their gun raised and wouldn't come out of it.

I am liking that the survival aspects aren't overly hardcore from what I've seen so far, no requirement to eat (except to restore health), drink water, sleep, etc.

But the setting and mystery are the main hook, and I can see myself getting lost in this one for a while.

I went with the recommended difficulty and it's actually quite brutal at times. Looking through the perks though they seem a little lack lustre... I hope there are some cool weapons or something later. Inventory management is also brutal. I like the way the stories are told and how you can stumble your way onto mysterious and investigations out of order but after nearly 8 hours the meat and potatoes is feeling a little samey. However I haven't returned to the Interchange so maybe there is something I should go back and do there as I've managed to find 4 or 5 atomic batteries from doing other stuff.

I couldn't put my finger on it because I don't think the Fallout comparisons were accurate. It actually feels like an Arkane Studios game. The enemies have the quirkiness of something like Dishonored and Deathloop, the stealth mechanics are light but also play a role, and there is lots of environmental detail and story telling like Prey and Deathloop. Being set in an alternative atomic 60s it has that retro futurism feel that was in Dishonored and even Prey. The combat even has that lite Arkane jank.

Went back to the Interchange and started unlocking sections with the batteries. This feels much cooler than the stuff in the over world but I think I'm hitting a wall. The first few hours are really good but the lack of variety and feeling like I'm making progress or getting stronger is wearing thin. Coming across more powerful robot enemies now and the first few were a rush because they were challenging but now I'm trying to avoid them because the skill point upgrades are meh and all the weapons I find are just different shades of shit they're becoming a chore. Why do both a .22 rifle and .303 Enfield both take the same "rifle" ammo and one does "low" damage and the other "high"? What is low and high? Then I come across environments to explore that I need resistances for but because inventory management is tight I'm not carrying resistant potions for it. That's OK, I'll go find a storage thing and reorganise my loadout for this environment.... oh wait, those things only exist in B.A.R.D facilities and there isn't one anywhere near and since there is no form of fast travel I need to hike back to one through areas with respawned enemies that I'll need to waste resources on. Items don't stack either so if you want to hoard say radiation resist to explore an area in a radiation cloud then you probably can't take any throwables or healing items. I read the main story can be finished in under 10 hours so I might just do a few side quests if they're in my way and move forward with the main investigation. I feel like this could have done with a bit more of a Bioshock spin and give some supernatural abilities which wouldn't have felt out of place given the lore behind the druid cult in the woods and stuff.

Wyndham Village is an absolute standout area though. I love how long you can spend there doing investigations and finding out some ****ed up stories without firing a shot. I also dob everyone in to the Captain because I don't trust a single person there. Then when you're exploring and a phone booth just starts ringing and makes you doubt the decisions you just made are also a nice touch. This game has some really cool things but it's like everything else is just meh.

It looks like unfortunately I'm not the only one who felt like this started off with a bang but fell off a steep cliff. I did read a good comment though that recommends to play this a bit more linear. Treat it more as a quick bite of junk food. Maybe it's just because I started to play it like I play other similar games (trying to do everything, explore everywhere etc) and this game isn't meant to played like that.

Only a small amount in but feel like I am just going to swing weapons at everyone.

I'm swinging the cricket bat with a lot more authority than I ever did out in the middle!

Played about 2 hours so far

Found the interchange and installed a battery. Now in Wyndham village

I assume that the premise of the game is to find all of the batteries to get the interchange up and running?

I’ve played about 3hrs, one thing that’s kinda annoying is the amount of leads that open up after just about every interaction with someone, got so many tasks in my investigation hub haha feels like it’s throwing too much at me at once.

I'm about 5-6 hours in. Still loving the mystery and setting, but combat definitely the weakness which makes it frustrating that enemies respawn when you leave and re-enter an area.

The barter system is interesting, and this is what I've figured out so far:
When you're trading, firearms appear to be a lot more valuable than melee weapons. You're own craftables, molotovs etc, are also weighed heavily. I recommend unlocking the charisma skill early to improve the value of your items to trade as this will allow you to get skillbooks and recipes early.

As for atomic batteries held by merchants:
I've only just unlocked the ability to craft updated firearms. Haven't tried this yet, but I'm of the opinion that you would need to trade 3-4 upgraded firearms in order to afford an atomic battery held by a merchant.

Ok, finished. Took about 21 hours, and that's doing most things (there's a few locked rooms I never found the key for, that's really the only things I missed). Add another 1-2 hours for save scumming. I created a second save at a critical point so I could reload and try different endings. I just finished the Telephone Operator, Captain Sims, and Joyce Tanner endings. Need to do a bit more work for the Doctor Harrow and Mother Jago endings, so I imagine there's another hour or two left for me.

I enjoyed the game, but there's a huge step to its obvious inspiration in Fallout, though that's obviously an absolute juggernaut. My early impressions never changed, the setting and mystery are very engaging, the characters are interesting, though the gameplay was hardly revolutionary and the graphics really made it obvious it was developed for last as well as current gen. I am looking forward to more from the developer, though.

For the endings I got:

There's barely any difference. They're done as static scenes with the Telephone Operator as the voice over, and across the three of them there's only a couple of static scenes that are different before they merge into the same conclusion, no matter how good the ending was.

Edit: the static images that were the same on all my endings as they relate to playstyle, so mine were related to combat, conversation, and answering the telephone. Different play styles will give different images.

so is the gist of the game to find all of the batteries to use at the interchange?

You need to find enough to power up the interchange so you can get to Oberon and make your end game choice there (I won't spoil what Oberon actually is). But you'll likely have a lot more batteries than you need by that stage, I probably have 10 left over.
