SHARPLES REMAINS UNBEATEN ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL

BRITISH young gun Dom Sharples will head into the Australian Open full of confidence after winning all three lead-up tournaments. He won in Brisbane, Sydney and now Hobart with a challenger event and will head to Melbourne keen to see what he can do in the Gram Slam.

At Hobart, Sharples fought off a field of 128 in Hobart to claim the title, crusing through in straight sets as the number one seed after defeating Austrian Ralf Landgraf in the opening round and close rival Peter Williams in the final. Sharples won the final 3-6 6-2 6-4, overcoming a first sets loss to post victory over Williams and win title number three.

Sharples have moved up to number 58 in the world rankings ahead of the Australian Open, while Williams is into 126 and Landgraf back at 206 after drawing the number one seed in two of the four tournaments. It is unsure if he will earn a wild card into the Australian Open draw.

WILLIAMS CARRIES NATIONS HOPES IN ROUND TWO

WILDCARD Peter Williams will carry the hopes of his nation on his shoulders heading into round two after all other Australians were eliminated. Despite starting the tournament with seven entries, Marinko Matosevic, Matt Reid, Lleyton Hewitt, Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, John Millman and Sam Groth all exited in round one with Williams the only victor - defeating Jiri Vesely in four sets after dropping the opening set 3-6.

In other results, all the seeds made it through to the second roudn despite a few close calls, while Austria's Ralf Landgraf will face off against Kei Nishikori in the round of 64 with the Japanese fifth seed a strong favourite in the clash. Meanwhile Dom Sharples will take on Alexandr Dolgopolov with the 19th seed hoping to eliminate one of only two Brits left in the draw. Williams will face Richard Gasquet in round two after the Frenchman eliminated Lleyton Hewitt in a thrilling round one encounter.

SHARPLES, WILLIAMS THROUGH BUT LANDGRAF GONE

AUSTRIAN Ralf Landgraf was no match for Kei Nishikori, bowing out in the second round of the Australian Open. The 206th ranked wildcard battled early, dropping the first set 3-6 before bouncing back with a 7-5 second set to level the scores. Unfortunately the Japanese star took over from there winning the last two sets easily 6-1 6-2.

It was better news for Brit Dom Sharples who set up a third round encounter with Ernests Gulbis. Sharples defeated 23rd seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4 6-3 6-3 in convincing style. If he can defeate Gulbis, he will likely face Feliciano Lopez in the fourth round with a quarter final against compatriot Andy Murray should he dare look that far ahead. Australian Peter Williams cannot afford to look that far ahead despite winning in four sets against Frenchman Richard Gasquet. He destroyed the 26th seed early with a 6-0 first set before Gasquet hit back with a 6-4 second set. Williams steadied to run out a 6-2 6-2 winner. He now faces the challenge that is Murray but should he somehow upset him he will not face a higher ranked player until the semi-finals.

Can confirm that this favours your players heavily early on lol, I have 4 created players in the semis at Brisbane.
Did you want to add three players to this story JT? Means I can have more players in my sim? Any names and nationalities.

It does, but it balances out eventually, I've had players that struggle to get in the top 120, while others win grand slams.

MURRAY MOUNTAIN TOO BIG TO CLIMB

THE last remaining Australian is out of the Australian Open after Peter Williams bowed out to sixth seed Andy Murray in four sets. Williams won the first set 6-4 but was eventually outclassed 6-4 6-2 6-1 by the Scot who moved through to the round of 16. Meanwhile fellow Brit Dom Sharples' campaign is still alive after he knocked off Latvian Ernests Gulbis in straight sets. He won 6-4 6-4 6-2 but now faces his biggest challenge yet, taking on number three seed, Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal. Sharples is also the only non-seed left in the tournament and he is excited to improve his mid 50s ranking.

BRAVE SHARPLES GOES DOWN SWINGING

SERVING for the match at 5-3 in the fifth set, it was like a dream for British wildcard Dom Sharples as he got within a sniff of knocking off the world number three, Rafael Nadal. Unfortunately it was not to be as the Spainard did what he has done so many times before and won the last four games to win the decided 7-5 and move through to the quarter finals. It was a shame for Sharples who would have played compatriot Andy Murray in the final eight. While he did not win, he can take solace from the fact he pushed Nadal all the way, leading two sets to one and having the chance to serve for the match, leading 5-2 at one stage in the final set.

In other results, ninth seed Marin Cilic upset top seed Novak Djokovic in four sets, while tenth seed David Ferrer stopped eighth seed, Canadian Milos Raonic from reaching the last eight.

Round 4:

[1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) defeated by [9] Marin Cilic (CRO) 4-6 6-4 6-2 6-4

[11] Grigor Dimitrov (BUL) defeated by [4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI) 6-0 6-2 6-3

[8] Milos Raonic (CAN) defeated by [10] David Ferrer (ESP) 6-2 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-1
[15] Roberto Bautista Agut (ESP) defeated by [2] Roger Federer (SUI) 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-4

Quarter Finals:

[9] Marin Cilic (CRO) vs. [7] Tomas Berdych (CZE)
[5] Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. [4] Stan Wawrinka (SUI)

[3] Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. [6] Andy Murray (GBR)
[10] David Ferrer (ESP) vs. [2] Roger Federer (SUI)

I'll add some players for sure.

Roberto Felicio, Brazil
Brendan Munro, New Zealand
Jose Rodriguez, Spain

I added 7 players for the first year of my sim and all of them were top 32 by the end of the year haha.
I've played with over 20, trust me the more there are the more fun it is. The whole thing I'd look for is to get tournaments of just regenerated players and it becomes more about bragging rights than anything else.

ROUND 1 RESULTS:

Peter Williams (AUS) defeated Radu Albot (MDA) 6-3 7-6 (1)
Laurent Lokoli (FRA) defeated by Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) 6-0 6-2
Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC) defeated Jurgen Zopp (EST) 6-2 6-2
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) defeated Fabiano De Paula (BRA) 6-1 6-1

Good first up wins for everyone, but granted three out of the four opponenets were below 200 and the other was 190, so nothing to look at just yet.

ROUND 2 MATCHES:

[14] Malek Jaziri (TUN) vs. Peter Williams (AUS)
Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC)
vs. [3] Rafael Nadal (ESP)
Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC) vs. [10] Nick Kyrgios (AUS)
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) vs. [9] Bernard Tomic (AUS)

Some big matches coming up now with all the players facing seeds. Nadal didn't drop a game in his opening match so tough encounter for Felicio, while Tomic hasn't been in the best form so Munro will look to capitalise. Likewise with Rodriguez against Kyrgios, neither made it past the first round of the Australian Open.

ROUND 2 RESULTS:

[14] Malek Jaziri (TUN) defeated by Peter Williams (AUS) 6-1 2-6 7-6 (2)
Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) defeated by [3] Rafael Nadal (ESP) 6-4 6-1
Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC) vs. [10] Nick Kyrgios (AUS) 6-3 0-6 6-4
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) defeated [9] Bernard Tomic (AUS) 6-2 3-6 6-2

Split the results with Munro and Williams making it through but Nadal and Kyrgios too good for Rodriguez and Felicio. Not bad considering the talent of opponents.

ROUND 3 MATCHES:

Peter Williams (AUS) vs. [3] Rafael Nadal (ESP)
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) vs. [2] Roger Federer (SUI)

Reckon our campaign might come to an end in round three given the matches. Tough ask, but never say never. Williams will have a chance to avenge Felicio's loss.

ROUND 3 RESULTS:

Peter Williams (AUS) defeated by [3] Rafael Nadal (ESP) 6-1 7-6 (6)
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) defeated by [2] Roger Federer (SUI) 6-4 6-1

Both Williams and Munro bow out in round three, the opponents were just too good in this instance. Some good ranking points at least, but still a long way to go in their careers.

Final: [2] Roger Federer (SUI) defeated [1] Novak Djokovic (SRB) 7-6 (5) 1-6 6-3

ROUND 1 MATCHES:

Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) vs. [7] Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP)
Matthias Bachinger (GER) vs. Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC)
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC)
vs. Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE)

Nice easy first one up for Munro, playing a player ranked 20-odd spots higher than him, while Felicio has to face the seventh seed. Although Carreno Busta has not had fun times against our regenerated team thus far :p

ROUND 1 RESULTS:

Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) defeated [7] Pablo Carreno Busta (ESP) 6-3 1-6 6-4
Matthias Bachinger (GER) defeated by Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC) 6-2 6-2
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) defeated Tsung-Hua Yang (TPE) 6-0 6-0

All three make it through and as expected Munro wins without dropping a game. Felicio took three sets to shake off our mate Carreno Busta, while Rodriguez got over Bachinger relatively easily.

ROUND 2 MATCHES:

Ryan Harrison (USA) vs. Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC)
[5] John Isner (USA) vs. Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC)
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC)
vs. [2] Tomas Berdych (CZE)

Tough gig for Rodriguez and particularly Munro now, drawing Isner and Berdych respectively. I expect Felicio to get through to the third round, but the other two will struggle.

ROUND 2 RESULTS:

Ryan Harrison (USA) defeated by Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) 6-4 6-1
[5] John Isner (USA) defeated Jose Rodriguez (ESP) (WC) 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-3
Brendan Munro (NZL) (WC) defeated by [2] Tomas Berdych (CZE) 6-2 6-3

As expected Felicio is the last man standing and he will play 16th seed, Croatian Ivan Dodig in the third round. While Dodig is only just ranked inside the top 100, a potential quarter final with Roger Federer awaits so he's unlikely to go much further than that.

PBZ_Zagreb_Indoors_2013.jpg

ROUND 3 RESULTS:

[16] Ivan Dodig (CRO) defeated by Roberto Felicio (BRA) (WC) 7-5 6-2

Good win by Felicio and he's probably run his course now, taking on the Fed Express in the quarter final. Should he somehow win (very unlikely), he will play one of Marin Cilic or Bernard Tomic.
