I listened to Mr. Rudd talking about his 100days and how they had to work on inflation.

10 minutes later I heard Mr Albanese announce the single most inflationary govt decision I can remember.

They are either stupid or incompetent.

Someone should tell Mr Albanese that groceries don't just have to be delivered from the distribution depot to the supermarket.

32 cents a week extra on the average grocery bill.
Nice troll but you will have to do better than that to generate any real interest.

Do you think that is it?
This will flow through to local and state govt's as well.
Increased costs of public transport
Increased cost of local govt work
Increased costs of new land developments
Increased costs of housing.
Increased costs of waste collection
Ironically it will increase the amount of road user charges needed to maintain the roads at the same level.
Increased costs of getting our exports to port.
Increased costs of everything that has a truck or bus involved.

If it wasn't so serious it would be laughable.

Get a grip, in the last four years under coward, house prices went up by 400%. Petrol skyrocketed, food prices went through the roof, strange that you didn;t mention that.

OOPS, also forgot that in the last five years, we have turned into a homphobic, racist, bigotted country as well.

Yep, coward's left our country in a great position.

Way to deflect from the issue.

Not through a deliberate govt decision.

The lower fuel excises benefited ALL Australians probably more so in the regions.

A bit socialistic but no different to the subsidies on public transport that City people benefit from.

To cover this impost at the very least Shire rates and State taxes will have to increase.

Blah blah blah, tell it walkin sister.
Trucks are a friggin pestilence on the road, the amount of damage and cost they cause to roads is horrendous.

Bugger!

I thought this was about their middle class welfare being cut.

I work with helping the people who can't afford to own homes, Yet they are hard working people, they are the so called "inskilled workers' , just because they haven't had the opportunities in life, should they be looked down on, or not given any help by the government?

Not at all. The people you have just mentioned have just been hit sneakily everywhere.
32cents/week ? Where? that's just groceries in sydney or Melbourne .

Mr Albanese is full of spin and only telling one little bit of the story..

When was the last rise? what do you think would have been a reasonable rise?

2000

http://www.treasurer.gov.au/DisplayDocs.aspx?pageID=&doc=pressreleases/2000/059.htm&min=phc

No need for a rise at all.

Lets just look at what a cash cow road transport actually is.

Mitchells cart iron ore from Jack hill to port at Geraldton. Mind you they had to build and maintain the last 100km of road.

I x road train
Annual rego $10600

6 x trips/week = 6600km /week = 34300 km /year @ 4.5MPG (1lt per / Km.

Quite incredible effientcy really when you are talking gross weights ~ 120 tonnes.

It is like getting 100MPG out of a Landcruiser.

Current excise = $0.20 = .$68,640.

Total road user charges for 1 rig = $79240.00

Mitchel's have at least 12 rigs doing this Job ~ $1mil /year just from ONE (1) operator.

Australia faces the risk of an inflation breakout. To bring inflation under control the Reserve Bank intends to impose a growth slowdown upon Australia that will dampen demand, trigger more interest rates increases, intensify the price pressures for working families and lift unemployment by a significant extent.

LOL. What do they do? Pour more fuel on the inflation fire.

It's the recession We had to have all over again.

Sadly it's what Rudd and Swan are left to deal with after 11 years of economic vandalism.
I take it you're a nationals supporter with a commensurate level of economic intelligence.

Booming economy.
Lowest unemployment rate in 34 years. 3.6% inflation (adjusted upwards three times from 2.9% in the dec qtr before the reserve bank had the unexpected slowdown figures http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/02/27/2174044.htm?section=justin) .

Get your hand off it. Like I said they are either stupid or incompetent.

^^ Those empoyment rates are cooked as shit anyway... If you work an hour a week you are considered "employed", also the unemployment rates have been impacted by the simple fact people are being thrown off benefits and thus off the "unemployment" books.

One thing I hope for from the Rudd government is a little more honest and open accounting- although I won't hold my breath.

And Whitlam had a lower unemployment rate so that makes him an economic genius?
Rodent and co left with us with an economy fit to bust with capacity constraints, the highest real interest rates in history (repayments as a proportion of income) and an education and health system up the shitter.
Yeah, good stuff eh?

you may have a point but its an intl measure (and if you think Australia is bad, some are really dodgy=> try Sweden)

It should be noted that ABS definitions of employment and unemployment conform with International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards. The ‘one hour criterion’ inthe definition of employment is considered fundamental to the ILO definition of unemployment, which refers to a situation of being completely without work.

Apparently it's not Mr Albaneses' fault.

This is what We are going to be up against with all Labor Govt's.

Ministers align to slug trucking industry with higher charges
Friday 29 February 2008
Labor transport ministers have aligned to force through significant road pricing increases for the trucking industry over the next three years. While an increase to the diesel excise of 1.365 cents per litre, and for the first time indexed annually, has been delayed until January next year, registration charges as proposed by the National Transport Commission (NTC) will still be phased in from July this year.

Federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has announced the changes after a meeting with state and territory transport ministers today.

A statement from the new federal Minister highlights a $70 million road safety package before revealing the decision the trucking industry has been dreading.

Albanese says the investment in road safety and transport productivity was made possible by the decision to overhaul and introduce "fairer" heavy vehicle charges.

He says registration charges on some multi-combination trucks will almost double in three years because they "currently don't pay their fair share".

The charges will be phased in over three years.

Albanese says the fuel excise, collected by the Commonwealth, had to be indexed "to cover future road costs".

"It is important that heavy vehicles pay their fair share of road construction costs as well as for the damage they do to the road network — a principle embraced by successive governments as well as the transport industry," he says.

"At present this is not happening."

He says the new charges will have "only a marginal impact on a vehicle's operating costs".

"We have carefully considered the proposed changes taking into account industry and stakeholder feedback received during the consultation period that followed the release of the draft Regulation Impact Statement last July," he says.

The new charging system will begin on January 1 next year.

The Hawke Government introduced indexation of petrol and diesel excise rates in the 22 August 1983 Budget because inflation was eroding the 'real' value of the rates.(5) Rates are indexed to the consumer price index (CPI) at the beginning of each February and August. The amount of the indexation increase is determined by the percentage increase in the 'all groups' CPI over the previous six months. For example, the February 2000 indexation increase was calculated by dividing the December quarter 1999 CPI by the June quarter 1999 CPI. The percentage increase is rounded to one decimal place (e.g. 1.5 per cent) and then applied to the excise rate, which is expressed in dollar terms (per litre) to five decimal places.(6)
It is not clear why the rates are indexed when other taxes are not indexed. Personal income tax rates, for example, are not indexed to prevent movement into higher marginal tax brackets as a result of inflation.

charges are imposed on owners of heavy vehicles in an attempt to recover the cost of damage. State governments impose a fixed annual registration charge. This charge is deficient in that it does not vary with distance travelled and hence damage to road pavements. Nor does the charge address the cost of externalities associated with road use.
